Olympia und Mount St. Helens

Erstes Etappenziel war heute Olympia, die Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates Washington. Hier waren wir aber nur kurz am State Capitol, dann ging es weiter zum Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.

Our first stop today was Olympia, the capital of the state of Washington. The State Capitol was nice, but to be honest, I have seen nicer ones.

Then we drove down to Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. This volcano had its last big eruption 30 years ago. It started on May 18, 1980 with a massive landslide at the northwestern slope of the mountain, followed by pyroclastic flows and mudslides. 57 people died back then, mainly because the "red zones" were in the wrong location. A "normal" vertical eruption was expected, and that would have directed the lava flows into a different direction.


Der letzte große Ausbruch dieses Vulkans war vor 30 Jahren. Am 18. Mai 1980 brach zuerst die gesamte Nordwestflanke des Berges weg, es folgten pyroklastische Flüsse und Schlammlawinen. 57 Menschen kamen dabei ums Leben, da die Behörden damals mit einer "normalen" vertikalen Eruption gerechnet hatten, wodurch sich die Lava in andere Richtungen ergossen hätte.

Auch 30 Jahre später sind die Verwüstungen noch sichtbar, die die Schlammlawinen vor allem im Toutle River Valley angerichtet haben. Die Straße durch das Tal wurde komplett an anderer Stelle neu gebaut. Oben auf der Johnston Ridge, wo sich das Visitor Center des National Park Service befindet, sind noch die Baumstümpfe der damals mitgerissenen Bäume sichtbar.



30 years later the damage caused by the mudslides in the Toutle River Valley is still visible. The road leading through the valley was reconstructed in a different location. Up on the Johnston Ridge, at the National Park Observatory, the stumps of the trees that were swept away by the flows are still visible.

I was really impressed by the wild foxgloves that were growing there abundantly, especially around Coldwater Lake, a lake that was formed in the 1980 eruption.


Besonders begeistert hat mich, in welchen Mengen dort wilder Fingerhut wächst, besonders am Ufer des Coldwater Lake, einem See, der erst durch die Eruption von 1980 entstanden ist.
