Was nähe ich denn jetzt?

Das habe ich mich tatsächlich am Jahresanfang gefragt, nachdem ich im Dezember hektisch alle Projekte abgearbeitet hatte. Also geht es mit Kleidung weiter. Im Herbst hatte ich ja Blusen in Serie produziert, und es liegen noch drei passende Wollstoffe für Jacken hier herum.

In December I actually finished all my projects so I needed something new to work on in January. I decided to go back to making clothes, I still have three matching wool fabrics for the blouses I made last autumn.

One of the pattern drafting magazines that Sabine D. sent me had a tutorial on how to draft a sweater pattern from a blouse sloper. I prefer cardigans and thought with the sweater tutorial I might be able to come up with a simple cardigan pattern for my wool fabrics, no lining, no fussy details. I gave that some thought, and then Nancy posted about Loes Hinse who drafts her jackets pattern "cardiganized", no lining, no facings, not even darts. So I decided to give it a try.

In einem der Rundschau-Hefte, die Sabine D. mir geschickt hatte, war erklärt, wie man einen Blusenschnitt in einen Pulloverschnitt umwandelt. Ich bin mehr der Strickjackentyp und dachte mir, da könnte ich meine Wollstoffe doch in so eine Art Strickjacke verwandeln, einfache Schnitte, kein Futter, ohne großen Aufwand. Darüber habe ich eine Weile gebrütet, dann habe ich bei Nancy gelesen, dass die Jacken von Loes Hinse so konstruiert sind, ohne Futter, ohne Besatz, sogar ohne Abnäher. Also wollte ich das auch mal probieren.

Ohne Abnäher war mir dann aber doch nichts, ein Kartoffelsack sollte es nun nicht werden. Den Schulterabnäher vom Grundschnitt habe ich zur Seite gedreht, den schmalen Taillenabnäher habe ich weggelassen. Am Rückenteil habe ich zwei Abnäher nach dem Vorbild meines Blusengrundschnitts gezeichnet, die hatte Leo, die Fachfrau, abgesteckt, und bei meinem Hohlkreuz finde ich das einfach besser. Am Ärmel habe ich den Ellenbogenabnäher entfernt. Und nachdem ich dann wieder Probleme hatte mir vorzustellen, wie genau ich das mit dem V-Ausschnitt und der Knopfleiste hinbekommen soll, habe ich die Knopfleiste kurzentschlossen wegrationalisiert und beschlossen, das Vorderteil auch im Stoffbruch zu schneiden und es als Pullover zu bezeichnen.

I didn't want to omit all darts, even a cardigan-style jacket can have a little shape. I moved the shoulder dart to the side and omitted the waist dart. Then I drafted two back waist darts based on my blouse sloper that Leo, professional custom tailor, had pinned for me. This is more flattering for my sway back. I then removed the elbow dart from the sleeve. And when I had trouble visualizing how to sew the front I decided not to make a cardigan but cut the front in one piece and call it a sweater after all.

I have no idea if all will work out as planned so I will have to make a muslin for this. I am not sure about length either. My sloper is very long, I did that on purpose, it is always easier to cut something off than adding more length. We will see how it will turn out.

Ob das alles so klappt, weiß ich natürlich nicht, also muss zumindest für diesen ersten Versuch wieder ein Probemodell her. Dann kann ich auch entscheiden, wie ich die Länge gern hätte. Den Grundschnitt habe ich absichtlich sehr lang konstruiert, abschneiden ist immer leichter als anfügen. Ich bin gespannt, ob das etwas wird.

Die Jacke ist fertig

Die Jacke ist fertig, ich habe jeden Tag ein bißchen daran genäht, und auf einmal ging es ganz schnell. Einige Kleinigkeiten habe ich wieder zu bemängeln, aber die fallen wahrscheinlich außer mir niemandem auf, also werde ich sie hier lieber nicht erwähnen. Und gestern war das Wetter so schön, dass ich sie auch gleich anziehen konnte... heute leider nicht mehr :(

I finished the jacket this week. I worked on it a little every day, and suddenly it was done. There are a few things I am not completely satisfied with but since I am sure that nobody except me will notice them I decided not to go into detail here. We had really nice weather yesterday so I even got to wear it right away... not today though, cool and cloudy again :(

Der Zweinahtärmel

Nachdem das Wetter mittlerweile sehr zu wünschen übrig lässt, habe ich überlegt, ob ich die Jacke, die ich vor dem Urlaub angefangen habe, überhaupt noch in diesem Jahr fertigstellen soll. Aber da das Langwierigste immer die Schnittbastelei ist und ich damit schon so gut wie fertig war, habe ich beschlossen, zunächst weiterzumachen. Es fehlte nur noch der Ärmel, also habe ich gestern einen Zweinahtärmel konstruiert. Zum Glück ändert sich da an der Kugel nichts, so dass ich das alles von meiner ersten Konstruktion übernehmen konnte und recht schnell fertig war.

The weather is quite nasty right now, and I considered putting the jacket that I started before our vacation on hold until next year. But the most time consuming part is the pattern drawing and alteration, and I was almost done with that anyhow, so I decided to continue for now. For the jacket I want a sleeve with two seams, so I drew one yesterday. Luckily the cap does not change so I could copy that part from the first jacket sleeve I had drawn. The rest didn't take long.

Die Zahl der Erfolgserlebnisse nimmt zu

Das Probemodell mit den Wiener Nähten und dem Schalkragen ist fertig, und es passt! Ich bin ganz überrascht, wie gut das klappt, wenn der Grundschnitt einmal passt. Ich habe mich zwar beim Nähen unglaublich angestellt und es tatsächlich geschafft, den rückwärtigen Besatz zweimal falsch herum anzunähen, aber letztendlich habe ich doch alle Teile dort untergebracht, wo sie hingehören. Jetzt muss ich mich nur noch mit dem Ärmel auseinandersetzen, das soll ein Zwei-Naht-Ärmel werden.

I finished the muslin for the jacket with the armhole princess seams and the shawl collar, and it fits! I am really surprised how well altering the sloper is working for me. I had some trouble sewing the pieces together and managed to set in the backward facing upside down twice before getting it right. Now I will just have to alter the sleeve pattern as I want to use a sleeve with two seams for this jacket.

Wiener Nähte und doppelreihiger Schalkragen

Das waren die Details, die ich mir für meine Jacke ausgesucht habe. Getreu meinem Motto, warum mit etwas Einfachem anfangen, Spaß macht es erst, wenn es richtig kompliziert ist, habe ich mich auf die Schnittänderungen gestürzt. Ob das alles so funktionert, wie ich es mir denke, wird sich zeigen, aber sieht schon mal so aus wie im Buch. Allerdings zeigt sich immer öfter, dass ich Probleme habe, mir den Schnitt dreidimensional vorzustellen. Ich habe ziemlich lange darüber gebrütet, ob ich denn nun noch einen rückwärtigen Besatz zeichnen muss oder nicht. Im Buch wird der gar nicht erwähnt, ist wahrscheinlich zu banal :) Jetzt werde ich ein Probemodell nähen und hoffen, dass es passt.

I decided to make a jacket with armhole princess seams and a shawl collar. I could have started with something easier to draft but I think it is more fun if it is really challenging. I have no idea if I altered everything correctly, but the pattern pieces do look like the ones in the book. Pattern drafting made me realize that I have trouble visualizing my two-dimensional drawing as a three-dimensional garment. It took me forever to figure out if I needed to draft a back facing piece or not. This was not even mentioned in the book, they probably thought it was self-evident :) Anyway, I will make a muslin now. Hopefully, it will fit.

Der Jackenärmel

Aus der Konstruktion der Jackenärmels habe ich eine halbe Doktorarbeit gemacht. Nachdem ich bei der letzten Bluse solche Probleme hatte, wollte ich unbedingt eine möglichst geringe Einhalteweite konstruieren, dabei aber auch im Rahmen der Vorgaben für Kugelhöhe und Ärmelbreite bleiben. Die Einhalteweite lag dann mit 10% aber doch wieder an der oberen Grenze.

I spent a lot of time on the sleeve construction for the jacket. After the trouble I had with setting in the sleeves with my last blouse, I tried to come up with as little sleeve ease as possible while staying inside the limits given for cap height and sleeve width. I ended up with a sleeve ease of 10% which is in the upper range and not what I wanted.

Before I started over, I measured the patterns of the blouse and of a Burda jacket where I had no trouble at all with the sleeves. To my surprise the Burda jacket had a sleeve ease of almost 12% while the blouse only had 9%. So it looked like the amount of sleeve ease hadn't been the problem but the distribution while setting in the sleeve.

Bevor ich weitere Konstruktionsversuche unternommen habe, habe ich dann die Schnitte von der fraglichen Bluse und von einer Burda-Jacke, mit deren Ärmeln ich keine Probleme hatte, nachgemessen. Erstaunlicherweise hatte die Burda-Jacke sogar fast 12% Einhalteweite, der Blusenärmel aber nur 9%. Also war offenbar gar nicht die Einhalteweite selbst das Problem, sondern die Verteilung.

Nach intensivem Studium der Müller & Sohn-Beschreibung habe ich dann die Aufteilung ganz akribisch vorgenommen, Ärmel und Armloch mit insgesamt fünf Passzeichen versehen und den Ärmel dann ganz mutig mal probeweise eingenäht. Zu meiner Überraschung klappte das gleich beim ersten Versuch völlig problemlos und ohne Falten. Nur der Ellenbogenabnäher saß ein bißchen zu tief, aber das ließ sich leicht ändern.

I studied the chapter about sleeve ease again and again and then tried to incorporate this information into my sleeve construction. Then I set one sleeve into my muslin jacket. To my surprise it was not a problem, the first try was already a success, not wrinkles at all. I just had to move the elbow dart a little as it was too low.

Probemodell für den Jackengrundschnitt

Den ersten Versuch eines Probemodells anzuprobieren war bisher immer der reine Horror - okay, beim Rock vielleicht nicht, aber bei jedem Oberteil, ich wusste schon vorher, dass mich die Falten am Rücken zur Verzweiflung bringen würden. Das Probemodell nach meinem Jackengrundschnitt ist eine erfreuliche Ausnahme. Ich war überrascht, wie gut es saß.

Trying on the first muslin has never been a good experience for me. Well, skirts may be the exception to that but with everything that covers my back I knew in advance that the wrinkles in that area would drive me crazy. The muslin I made using the jacket sloper I constructed was different. I was surprised that it actually fit quite well.

And I also found out in the meantime how to deal with the shoulder pads. It was the right idea not to pay attention to that when constructing the sloper. The extra room that is needed for the armhole and shoulder cap is considered when the pattern changes are made to the sloper and it is clear which kind of pads are used for that specific jacket. That makes sense, otherwise it would be necessary to draw a whole new sloper if those huge pads from the 80s ever came back into style (I sincerely hope not!!!) :)

Und die Sache mit den Schulterpolstern habe ich inzwischen auch geklärt. Es war absolut richtig, beim Grundschnitt darauf keine Rücksicht zu nehmen. Das wird immer erst beim jeweiligen Schnitt mit den jeweiligen Schulterpolstern berücksichtigt. Ist ja eigentlich auch logisch, sonst müsste man einen komplett neuen Grundschnitt konstruieren, falls mal wieder die riesigen 80er-Jahre-Schulterpolster in Mode kommen (hoffentlich nicht!!!) :)

Grundschnitt für eine Jacke

Von meinen letztjährigen Einkäufen auf dem Stoffmarkt ist noch genau ein Stoff übrig, nämlich der türkisgrüne. Das trifft sich gut, da am Sonntag schon wieder Stoffmarkt ist. Natürlich liegen noch fast alle Einkäufe vom März unverarbeitet hier herum, aber das zählt ja nicht :)

I have only one fabric left of last year's fabric market purchase, the mint green one. This is good news as the next fabric market will be this Sunday. I have still most of my March purchases lying around but that doesn't count, right? :)

Anyway, I will try to turn this last fabric into a jacket. The first thing I need for that is a sloper. Construction of a jacket sloper is not that different from a blouse sloper, so I used the same alterations to fit it to my measurements. But there are a few things I am not sure about yet. How much extra room do I need for shoulder pads, for example? I never use pads for a blouse, but always for a jacket. To answer these questions, I will go and make a muslin and see where that leads me.

Jedenfalls will ich diesen letzten Stoff zu einer Jacke verarbeiten. Dazu musste natürlich als erstes ein Grundschnitt her. Die Konstruktion ist erstmal so ähnlich wie bei einer Bluse, und auch bei den figurbedingten Änderungen habe ich mich an dem Blusengrundschnitt orientiert. Allerdings bin ich mir bei einigen Sachen nicht sicher. Wieviel Platz brauche ich z.B. für die Schulterpolster, die ich in Blusen nicht habe, in Jacken aber immer? Also wird jetzt erstmal ein Probemodell genäht, und dann dürfte wieder einmal Basteln angesagt sein.

Der Rock ist fertig

Der letzte Sommerrock ist nun auch geschafft, das Wetter ist leider sehr herbstlich, so dass ich ihn wohl nicht mehr anziehen kann. Aber so bin ich jedenfalls schon mal für den nächsten Frühling gerüstet.

I finished my last summer skirt this weekend. Unfortunately fall is already here so I will probably not be able to wear it anytime soon. But I am definitely ready for spring!

The pleated panel didn't work with my fabric so I decided to omit it. It looked pretty nice on the flat skirt but after I put it on it poked out at weird angles and looked very strange. I think my fabric was just not soft enough.

Das Faltenteil habe ich letztendlich doch weggelassen. Es sah zwar ganz hübsch aus, aber stand sehr merkwürdig ab, wenn ich den Rock angezogen habe. Ich denke mal, es lag am Stoff, meiner war einfach nicht weich und fließend genug.

Für das Foto habe ich die Empire-Jacke rausgeholt, der Rock allein war doch ein bißchen langweilig :-)

Rock und Jacke am lebenden Modell

Der Rock ist fertig, und ich bin sehr zufrieden damit. Er passt gut zu meiner pinkfarbenen Jacke, die ich übrigens sehr liebe und ständig trage. (Tut mir leid wegen der vielen Falten, ich hatte schon den ganzen Tag mit dem Rock gesessen.)

The skirt is finished, and I like it very much. It goes well with my pink jacket which I love and wear all the time. (Sorry about the wrinkles, I had been sitting with the skirt the whole day.)

Der absolute Knaller

... ist die pinkfarbene Jacke! Ich liebe sie, sie ist wirklich toll geworden!

Burda WOF did some decorative stitching on the seams using contrasting thread. I didn't like that with my pink fabric, so I chose pink machine embroidery thread and stitched along the seams with an elastic zig-zag stitch.


Burda hatte die Nähte im Zick-Zack mit kontrastfarbenem Garn abgesteppt. Das hat mir bei meinem Stoff nicht so gefallen. Ich habe jetzt pinkfarbenes Stickgarn genommen und mit genähtem Zick-Zick-Stich gesteppt.

Sieht schon ganz gut aus

Die Jacke ist zusammengenäht, jetzt kommt die Feinarbeit. Bisher gefällt sie mir wirklich gut. Sie ist toll geschnitten, ein bißchen auf Figur, und ich glaube, die Passform ist mir auch ganz gut gelungen. Und diese kleinen Einsätze am Ausschnitt gefallen mir sehr gut.
I stitched the jacket pieces together, now on to the smaller things. I really like the jacket so far. The pattern is great, and I think I did a good job with the fitting. And the neckline looks very interesting.

Fortschritt

Auch wenn das Papiermodell gut saß, habe ich vorsichtshalber doch noch ein Probemodell genäht. Ich bin mir noch nicht so sicher, ob ich mich auf meine Erkenntnisse aus dem gefalteten Papierschnitt so verlassen kann. Ich weiß, das Probemodell ist schlecht gebügelt und die Ärmel sind auch nicht gut eingesetzt, aber grundsätzlich passt es.

Even though I liked the fit of the paper model I made a muslin nevertheless. I am not quite sure yet how reliable my paper pattern constructions are. I know that I didn't iron the muslin well and the sleeves are set in poorly, but it basically fits.

I cut the fabric right away, stitched all the seams and darts of the front and back pieces and joined the shoulder seams. So far, I like it very much.

Also habe ich gleich zugeschnitten und schon mal Vorder- und Rückenteile zusammengenäht und die Schulternähte geschlossen. Bis jetzt gefällt mir die Jacke sehr gut.

Jacke 113 aus Burda 03/2007

Aus dem pinkfarbenen Stoff, den ich bei Karstadt unbedingt mitnehmen musste, will ich eine Jacke machen, und zwar Modell 113 aus der Burda 03/2007. Der Schnitt ist für meinen Geschmack allerdings ein wenig zu kurz, deshalb habe ich ihn ein bißchen verlängert und auch sonst meine üblichen Anpassungen vorgenommen.

I want to make a jacket from the pink fabric I bought last month. I ordered some Burda WOF back issues and decided on jacket 113 from the March 2007 issue. The jacket is a little short for my taste, so I lengthened the pattern and made my usual alterations.

Then I folded a paper model following the "Fit for Real People" instructions. I am satisfied with the fit but I still have doubts about my ability to correctly interpret the paper model.
Danach habe ich nach "Fit for Real People" ein Papiermodell gefaltet. Ich finde, es sitzt ganz gut, obwohl ich noch nicht 100%ig von meinem Fähigkeiten überzeugt bin, das Papiermodell richtig zu interpretieren.

Die fertige Jacke

Die Jacke ist komplett fertig, und sie gefällt mir wirklich gut. Passende Knöpfe habe ich auch gefunden.
My jacket is completely finished, and I like it very much. I even found the right buttons without much effort.

One of the buttons is just decoration and stitched to the outside of the jacket. The jacket itself is closed with a snap fastener. The other button is "real" and needed a buttonhole. A small part of the seam is just left open, so it was really easy to make.

Der eine Knopf ist nur eine Attrappe und von außen aufgenäht, innen wird die Jacke mit einem Druckknopf geschlossen. Für den anderen Knopf war ein Knopfloch erforderlich. Dieses ist jedoch in der Naht "versteckt", so dass es besonders einfach zu nähen war.

Hong Kong Finish

Mit der Jacke bin ich gut weitergekommen. Mich hat allerdings gestört, dass das Futter nur bis zur Empire-Linie geht. Ich sehe ja ein, dass der untere Teil mit den Falten nicht so gut zu füttern ist, aber die Nahtzugaben nur mit Zick-Zack zu versäubern war mir nicht ordentlich genug. Schließlich bin ich auf die Idee gekommen, es mit einem Hong Kong Finish zu versuchen.

I am making progress with the jacket but didn't like the way Burda WOF finished it on the inside. It is only lined from the top to the empire line. I can understand that it is difficult to line the lower part with the pleats but I didn't like the idea of just neatening the seam allowances and leaving them like that. I finally decided to try a Hong Kong Finish.

I found a great tutorial with lots of pictures by Nancy. It was easy to follow, I had no problems doing it and I am really happy with the result. Now the jacket just needs buttons, then it will be finished.

Ich habe eine tolle Anleitung von Nancy gefunden (nur auf Englisch, aber jede Menge Bilder und daher gut zu verstehen). Es hat auf Anhieb geklappt, und ich bin mit dem Ergebnis sehr zufrieden. Jetzt fehlen nur noch die Knöpfe.

Der Reverskragen

Mein erster Versuch eines Reverskragens ist fertig! Und ich bin ganz zufrieden. Die eine Seite ist sehr gut geworden, die zweite... naja, es fehlt mir halt noch ein bißchen Übung, aber es ist akzeptabel. Die Burda-Anleitung war wenig hilfreich. Wenn man keine Ahnung hat, was man tut, ist man ohne ein gutes Nähbuch aufgeschmissen.

I tried to make my first collar and lapel today, and I am quite happy with the result. One side turned out really great, and the other... well, it looks okay but I have to practice a little more. Burda WOF's instructions were not really helpful. If you have no idea what you are doing (like me) then you really need a good sewing book.

Die Jacke ist zugeschnitten

Heute habe ich das getan, was ich am wenigsten gern mache: zuschneiden. Die Jacke hat wirklich viele Teile. Und das Futter ist noch nicht einmal dabei.

Today I did what I like least about the whole sewing process: cutting the fabric. This jacket really has a lot of pieces. And I didn't even cut the lining yet.

Das Probemodell

Das Probemodell ist fertig, und ich bin ganz zufrieden. Nur die Ärmel müssen noch ein Stück länger werden. Ich weiß nicht, warum Burda so gern 3/4-Ärmel macht. Ich finde, das sieht immer aus wie gewollt und nicht gekonnt.

My muslin is done, and I am quite happy with it. I will just have to lengthen the sleeves. I don't know why Burda WOF is so fond of 3/4-sleeves. I think it looks like you were unable to sew a sleeve with the right length.

I found out today that not everything "Fit for Real People" tells you to do is correct for everyone. I really love that book but setting in the sleeve following their advice didn't work to me. I always move the shoulder seam a little to the front. The question is how to insert the sleeve correctly.

Übrigens habe ich hier die Erfahrung gemacht, dass man auch nicht alles blind glauben darf, was bei "Fit for Real People" steht, so sehr ich das Buch auch liebe. Ich verlege die Schulternaht aufgrund meiner "Forward Shoulders" immer 1 cm nach vorn. Da stellt sich dann die Frage, wie der Ärmel eingesetzt werden soll.

Zuerst habe ich das Passzeichen auf der Armkugel einfach um 1 cm nach hinten verlegt. Der eingesetzte Ärmel schlägt Falten von hinten nach vorn. Laut "Fit for Real People" soll man das Passzeichen unverändert lassen und einfach auf der neuen Position der Schulternaht einnähen. Das habe ich gemacht, und wieder schlägt der Ärmel Falten, diesmal von vorn nach hinten. Die richtige Position liegt also irgendwo dazwischen.

In my first try I set in the sleeve cap at the point where the shoulder seam would have been without the alteration. There are wrinkles pointing from the back to the front. "Fit for Real People" recommends to set in the sleeve cap at the new shoulder seam. I tried that, and there where wrinkles again, this time pointing from the front to the back. The correct position for the sleeve seems to be somewhere in between.

Das Papiermodell

Nach den üblichen Änderungen am Rücken habe ich in mühevoller Kleinarbeit ein Papiermodell gefaltet, und es scheint ganz gut zu sitzen. Ich habe die Jacke ein Stück verlängert, und das muss ich mit den Ärmeln sicher auch noch tun, die sind mir einfach zu kurz. 10 cm können da gut noch ran, denke ich. Aber erstmal mache ich ein Probemodell.
I made my usual alterations and then folded a paper model of the jacket, and it looks like the fit is quite good. I made the jacket a little longer than the Burda pattern suggested, and I will have to do the same to the sleeves, they are way too short for me. I think I will have to add at least 4". But first I will make a muslin.
