Kurzfristig umdisponiert

I changed my plans and didn't quilt the scrap quilt top over the holidays. It just hasn't spoken to me yet. I have a few ideas but nothing yet that feels completely right. I am in no rush, so I started another project instead. I have wanted to make a Christmas tree skirt for several years but I always run out of time. Suddenly it's Christmas, and I haven't even thought about a pattern yet. This year I came across a pattern that I liked a week before Christmas. I saved it for future use but then realized that I would never actually make it unless I started right away. And when the Christmas fabrics went on sale with 50% off, I decided to get some fabrics. And once I had those I figured I might as well just sew it now. I finished the top in a day, and I know how I want to quilt it. So there is a good chance I will actually have a tree skirt ready for next Christmas.

Frohe Weihnachten

Frohe Weihnachten!

We are pretty much behind the rest of the world here timezone-wise, so Christmas Day is almost over for most of you. But I would still like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a joyous, relaxing and safe holiday season. Merry Christmas!

When I thought I had worked through all my customer quilts I received another one this week that I wanted to get done before Christmas. In all fairness I have to mention that my customer did not expect me to do this... I offered to try, and it all worked out, she just picked it up and was quite happy. But of course this changed all my plans for this week, and I have been running around from one Christmas party to the next. Don't ask me how I managed to finish a quilt top in between, but I did it. The first scrap quilt top is done, and I am looking forward to quilting it over the holidays. I have been doing a little custom quilting but most people just choose a pantograph which gets boring (especially when they all choose the same, I quilted three queen size quilts in a row in December with the same pantograph, that was not very exciting). Quilting this top will be fun, I have no idea yet what I want to do. I will have to wait until it speaks to me.

This week is full of meetings and Christmas parties. Tomorrow is the third Tuesday of the month which means it is time for another guild meeting. There will be a potluck lunch and a few more things on the agenda, one of them is a Christmas block challenge. Anyone can bring one or more Christmas blocks between 6" and 10", and for each block you bring, you will receive a ticket to enter the Christmas draw. Depending on how many blocks there will be in the pot, one or more winners will be chosen. I made three blocks with the leftover Christmas fabrics from this year's cards. The pattern was inspired by Deborah Schlegel's North Star Potholders. I just didn't want to make the same block three times, so I changed the centre part a little for each one. Fiddling around with the tiny pinwheel reminded me of my 365 challenge blocks... they went into a box for the move, and I never looked at them again. But I have two months finished and will get them out again in January. If I keep this up, I will be done with all the blocks after six years. Sounds like a plan to me!

Show and Tell in der Bücherei

Every Wednesday there is open sewing at the local library, and I try to go whenever I can. It is so interesting and inspiring to see what others are working on, and sewing with other is always more fun than doing it at home alone. Since I am very busy this week quilting for customers and have no progress to show of my own work, I would like to share some of the things the others work on.

Wendy who is also a Singer Featherweight lover brings her trusty machine every week to work on scraps. Small scraps. Tiny scraps. She cuts them into 1" squares and then puts them together into nine patches and four patches with setting triangles. She was inspired by Sue Garman's "Oh My Gosh" quilt... take a moment and check out the picture. It's completely insane but will look stunning when it is done.

Wendys "Oh My Gosh" Blöcke

Jackies Tischsets

The rest of us usually work on more achievable projects that give faster satisfaction. Jackie made a set of cheerful and charming placemats. I love the bumblebee she appliquéd, it adds just the right amount of pizzazz.

And last but not least, Ciska made this wonderful blueberry pie potholder for her daughter. You really have to look twice to realize it is fabric and not actually a pie. What a great idea!

Ciskas Blueberry Pie Topflappen

Let It Snow

The Lower Mainland of BC has the mildest climate in Canada. We rarely get snow here, and our average winter temperatures are in the upper 40s, so not really cold. Last winter we had maybe three days of snow, and it all melted again quickly. Which is good because nobody here is prepared to handle snow. And nobody can drive on snow. As soon as people see a few snowflakes, it's pure chaos. We have been under an "Arctic Outflow Warning" this past week, and while it was quite cold with temperatures below freezing and a very icy wind, we didn't see much snow. Until Friday.

It started snowing early Friday morning but not enough to close the schools. It snowed pretty much continuously with just a few breaks until Sunday morning. It's been a long time since I have seen that much snow, and I have certainly never seen it in the Lower Mainland. We thought we had a lot of snow on Saturday when I took the first pictures. We couldn't believe the amount that fell overnight. I can't even get out of our neighbourhood in my small car, I would just get stuck on the road right in front of the house. According to the forecast, there isn't anymore snow in the near future. It is sunny and quite pretty outside now, a winter wonderland.

And I am done! I quilted the Christmas wall hanging right away and even put the binding on and a hanging sleeve. I had fun playing with Millie. It's not perfect but I really like it. I am very happy with the background loop and snowflake/star filler (I think I found that on Leah Day's site), and I like my holly leaves and berries in the border although I think the proportions are a little weird. A fast, fun and easy project!

I rarely use patterns when I am making quilts but last Friday I came across a free pattern online that was just too cute to pass. "Dancing Garland" by Sandy Peschke (available for download at Landauer Publishing) is all made up of 2" squares. And that is one of the sizes that I cut from my scraps. The picture of the wall hanging kept creeping into my mind, and on Saturday I finally gave in. I dug through my scrap squares, and I just had to cut a few green ones. I even had enough larger squares in the right colours already cut to make the half square triangles. I finished the top yesterday, and I hope I will find the time to quilt it this afternoon.

Free Motion Feather Filler

I have nothing to show that is personal sewing, I am still busy with customer quilts. Most of them choose pantographs, and that is like sewing with precuts to me... it gets boring quickly. One of my friends from the quilt guild brought me a small quilt and asked for something with feathers on the borders. It wasn't supposed to be a formal feather border, just something fun that would work on her cute scrappy log cabin quilt. We decided on a free motion feather filler, and I am really happy with the way it turned out. I have always loved free motion quilting, and it is so much easier with the longarm. My shoulders are quite happy I decided to buy my Millie. And usually I am my own worst critic and am never completely satisfied with my work but this quilt was pretty much the exception to the rule. I like the feather filler design, didn't obsess too much but just did it, and really love how it turned out.

Restequilt

I still don't really have time for my own sewing projects but at least I started working on another scrap quilt. I made several of them before and the design is great for using up everything, even the fabrics that you think are quite ugly. I have the scraps and the background cut ready and sorted, and whenever I have a little time I sit down and make one row. The progress is slow but at least it is progress. This quilt will be donated to the guild's We Care program when I actually manage to finish it.

Trunk Show mit Carol Pettigrew

The Chilliwack Quilters Guild had invited Carol Pettigrew from Burnaby for a Trunk Show this month. I love trunk shows, they are always inspiring, and it is interesting to see how other quilters progress and how they go from one "phase" to the next. I don't necessarily like all the quilts, and lots of them I would never try to make myself but I was very impressed by her beautiful work. I took too many pictures, so I will post them as a few collages.

Also, ohne weiteren Kommentar, hier sind die Bilder vom letzten Show and Tell.

Time sure flies... another month has gone by, and we had our guild meetings this week. I am a little pressed for time right now because people finally realized that Christmas is just around the corner and they need their quilts quilted before they can give them away as Christmas gifts. But I am not complaining, I am having a lot of fun quilting and am quite happy that I decided to do this as a business. So without further commentary, here are this month's Show and Tell pictures.

(In)Finity Scarves

Every time I go to a quilt show I am determined not to buy anything. But of course I always do. This time I bought three kits for Infinity Scarves and instead of putting them away for later I actually started working on them right away. They are quick and easy to make and I really like the look of them but when I tried it on, I came to the conclusion that it wouldn't work for me. My temperature feeling is still completely off because of the medication. I either have a hot flash and am dying from heat or I am freezing. Most of the time I am freezing. And having had longer hair all my life I find it quite cold around my neck, so I wear a scarf at all times now. And I don't wear it for the looks but for warmth. The Infinity Scarf just doesn't wrap around my neck closely enough. I tried to pull it up there the way I like it but then the lower part hangs way too low. I decided that infinity wouldn't work for me, unpicked the seam and turned all three kits into regular scarves that I can tie the way I like it.

It's mid-November already, and Christmas seems to be just around the corner. After a break of several years I started making Christmas cards again last year and want to continue to do so this year. I have to start early since many of them will be sent to Europe, so they have to be ready to be mailed out in early December. I quickly drew up a design and went fabric shopping. Here is the result, aren't they gorgeous? Now I just have to find the time to actually make the cards...
