Nach langer Zeit

... habe ich es endlich mal wieder geschafft, mit den Zick-Zack-Zicken für ein Wochenende nach Wahlsdorf zu fahren. Wir sind vor vier Jahren nach Kanada gezogen, daher dürfte es ziemlich genau fünf Jahre her sein, dass ich zum letzten Mal dort war. Als es sich abzeichnete, dass ich in diesem Jahr nach Deutschland kommen würde, habe ich mich mit Anke in Verbindung gesetzt und den Flug dann passend gebucht, nachdem sie mir die Daten mitgeteilt hatte. Es war so schön, alle wiederzusehen und genügend Zeit zum Reden zu haben. Ich hatte kanadische Stoffe (Cantik Batiks) für alle mitgebracht und kaufte in Wahlsdorf dann deutsche Stoffe (Westfalenstoffe) als Mitbringsel für meine kanadischen Freundinnen. Und ein schönes Sortiment Wolle habe ich auch gekauft... viel Platz war nicht in meinem Koffer, aber die Wolle ist ja leicht und passte noch hinein, und die bunten Farben sind so hübsch.

After a long time I managed to go to Wahlsdorf again for a weekend with my friends. We moved to Canada four years ago, so I am pretty sure that I haven't been to Wahlsdorf in five years. When I knew I would go to Germany this year I contacted Anke and then booked the flight after she sent me the dates. It was wonderful to see everyone again and catch up. I had brought Canadian fabrics (Cantik Batiks) for everyone and bought German fabrics (Westfalenstoffe) to take back for my Canadian friends. And I bought a nice assortment of wool roving... space in my suitcase was limited, and they were light and fluffy and so pretty.

Weihnachtsfeier der Gilde

Beide Gilden hatten in der Woche vor Weihnachten noch ihre Weihnachtsfeiern, die Morgengilde am Dienstag und die Abendgilde am Mittwoch. Bei beiden gab es ein Buffet, für das jeder etwas mitbrachte, und Spiele und Geschenke.

Both local guilds had their Christmas parties during the week before Christmas. The morning guild started on Tuesday, the evening guild followed on Wednesday. Both had potluck buffets and games and gifts.

The morning guild also had a special Show and Tell/Christmas item competition. The items had to be completed this year, so I brought my Dancing Garland Wall Hanging. 

Bei der Morgengilde gab es auch einen kleinen Wettbewerb für Weihnachtsprojekte, die in diesem Jahr fertiggestellt worden waren. Da ich ja spontan den Dancing Garland Wandbehang genäht hatte, hatte ich sogar etwas dafür.

Und dann wurden die Weihnachtsblöcke verlost. Insgesamt waren über 80 Stück mitgebracht worden, und zwei glückliche Gewinnerinnen durften sich diese teilen.

Then there was the Christmas block lottery, we ended up with more than 80 blocks, and two lucky winners took them home and will hopefully turn them into quilts until next Christmas.

And everybody received a small gift bag with fabric or sewing notions, mine had a beautiful FQ of batik fabric. 

Kleine Geschenktüten gab es dann auch für jedes Mitglied, gefüllt mit Stöffchen und Nähzubehör. In meinem befand sich ein FQ Batikstoff.

Bei der Abendgilde gab es einen Secret Santa Gift Exchange. Ich hatte dafür einen meiner Elche eingepackt und bekam zwei kleine Stofftäschchen, genäht von Wendy, die mittwochs auch immer in der Bücherei näht.

Kurzfristig umdisponiert

... habe ich über die Feiertage. Das Restetop habe ich noch nicht gequiltet, da fehlt mir noch die letzte zündende Idee. Ein paar Ideen habe ich schon, aber so richtig überzeugt bin ich noch nicht. Und da ich nicht in Eile bin, habe ich stattdessen ein anderes Projekt begonnen. Ich wollte schon seit ein paar Jahren ein Tree Skirt für den Weihnachtsbaum machen. Hier in Kanada stellen wir den Baum schon Anfang Dezember auf, da lohnt sich das dann so richtig. Aber irgendwie ist mir immer die Zeit davongelaufen. Plötzlich war Weihnachten da, und ich hatte noch nicht mal eine Idee, wie das Teil eigentlich aussehen sollte. In diesem Jahr habe ich dann etwa eine Woche vor Weihnachten eins gesehen, das mir gefallen hat. Und als ich es abgespeichert hatte, wurde mir klar, dass ich besser gleich mit dem Nähen anfangen sollte, damit es auch wirklich etwas wird. Und als dann einen Tag vor Heiligabend die Weihnachtsstoffe um 50% reduziert wurden, bin ich kurzentschlossen losgefahren und habe Stoffe gekauft. Und nachdem ich die dann schon mal hatte, habe ich auch gleich genäht. Das Top war nach einem Tag fertig, und wie ich es quilte, weiß ich auch schon. Die Chancen stehen gut, dass ich im nächsten Jahr tatsächlich einen fertigen Quilt für den Weihnachtsbaum haben werde.

I changed my plans and didn't quilt the scrap quilt top over the holidays. It just hasn't spoken to me yet. I have a few ideas but nothing yet that feels completely right. I am in no rush, so I started another project instead. I have wanted to make a Christmas tree skirt for several years but I always run out of time. Suddenly it's Christmas, and I haven't even thought about a pattern yet. This year I came across a pattern that I liked a week before Christmas. I saved it for future use but then realized that I would never actually make it unless I started right away. And when the Christmas fabrics went on sale with 50% off, I decided to get some fabrics. And once I had those I figured I might as well just sew it now. I finished the top in a day, and I know how I want to quilt it. So there is a good chance I will actually have a tree skirt ready for next Christmas.

Weihnachten naht mit großen Schritten

Jetzt haben wir schon Mitte November, und Weihnachten steht fast vor der Tür. Nach ein paar Jahren Pause hatte ich im letzten Jahr ja wieder Weihnachtskarten selbst gemacht, und das möchte ich in diesem Jahr gern auch wieder tun. Und damit muss ich frühzeitig anfangen, Anfang Dezember müssen sie verschickt werden, da viele von ihnen nach Europa gehen und den Atlantik rechtzeitig überquert haben sollen. Also habe ich mir schnell ein Design überlegt und bin dann Stoff einkaufen gegangen. Und hier ist das Ergebnis, tolle Stoffe habe ich gefunden. Jetzt brauche ich nur noch die nötige Zeit, um die Karten auch tatsächlich in Angriff zu nehmen...

It's mid-November already, and Christmas seems to be just around the corner. After a break of several years I started making Christmas cards again last year and want to continue to do so this year. I have to start early since many of them will be sent to Europe, so they have to be ready to be mailed out in early December. I quickly drew up a design and went fabric shopping. Here is the result, aren't they gorgeous? Now I just have to find the time to actually make the cards...

Keine Zeit

Es gibt mich noch, aber ich habe nicht wirklich Zeit zum Nähen. Wir renovieren immer noch, und meine Nähsachen sind alle noch in Kartons in der Garage. Im Mai habe ich allerdings zwei Wochen hektisches Nähen eingeschoben, aber leider darf ich da nicht ins Detail gehen und auch keine Bilder zeigen. Eine Freundin von mir wurde von einer Filmproduktion beauftragt, Quilt Tops zu nähen. Sie brauchten eine Menge Quilt Tops, und wie das beim Film so ist innerhalb kürzester Zeit, also hat sie alle ihre Quiltfreundinnen zum Helfen zusammengetrommelt. Wir haben wie verrückt genäht und alles noch rechtzeitig fertiggestellt. Zeigen kann ich aber nur den Stoffstapel vor Beginn des Projekts... ich weiß, nicht besonders spannend... aber es wird auch wieder besser, versprochen.

 

I am still around but I haven't really had time to sew. We are still renovating, and most of my sewing stuff is boxed up in the garage. I did have two weeks of frantic quilt top making in May but unfortunately I am not allowed to talk about the details or show pictures. A friend of mine was hired by a movie company to make quilt tops for a production. They needed a lot of quilt tops and fast, so she called in everybody she knew to help. We worked like idiots for two weeks and got everything done in time. All I can show is the pile of fabrics that went into this project... not very exciting, I know... but it will get better again, I promise.

Die zündende Idee

Jetzt, wo es mir wieder besser geht und ich auch wieder etwas mehr Zeit habe, schien mir der Zeitpunkt gekommen, endlich die zweite Ladung Heilende Herzen zu verarbeiten, die ich letztes Jahr bekommen habe. Die Idee, vier Blöcke als Eckblöcke im Rand zu verwenden, gefiel mir immer noch, aber ich hatte keine Ahnung, was ich mit dem Rest des Randes anstellen sollte. Eigentlich wollte ich schon über Weihnachten loslegen, aber mir fehlte einfach die zündende Idee. Ich habe viel in EQ herumgespielt, aber irgendwie sprach mich alles nicht an. Nachdem ich mehrere Ideen wieder verworfen hatte, bin ich dann zufällig über den richtigen Block gestolpert. Ich hatte einen Flying Geese Block aus der EQ Library geholt, in den Quilt eingefügt und geplant, die Farben dann zu verändern. Das habe ich auch gemacht, aber irgendwie sah der Quilt mit den EQ-Farben viel besser aus.

 

Now that I am feeling better and have a little more time, I decided it was time to do something with the second set of Healing Hearts I received last year. I still liked the layout idea of putting four of the blocks into the border but it took me a long time to come up with a design that spoke to me. I had planned on making this my Christmas holidays project but I just wasn't ready at the time. I played around with lots of ideas in EQ but nothing looked right to me. I started over several times, and last week I finally stumbled upon something by accident. I pulled a Flying Geese block from the EQ library and set it into my border, intending to change the colours afterwards. And I did change the colours but for some reason the EQ colour combination worked much better for my design. 

I took out the blocks again and realized that red/orange/yellow/green Flying Geese would pick up all the colours in the heart blocks and actually pull everything together. I thought about it for a couple of days, and the longer I looked at it the more I liked it, so I bought fabrics this week. I found the perfect batiks for this project and already finished two sets of Flying Geese. Since the blocks are metric but I am sewing imperial over here, I ended up with a weird finished block size of 9 3/4". I have to paper piece the geese units, there is no way to cut and sew them exactly otherwise. I like it so far... I need sixteen more units, and then I will have to figure out the exact position of all the blocks.

Also habe ich die Blöcke herausgeholt und festgestellt, dass Flying Geese in rot, orange, gelb und grün richtig gut dazu passen und dem Ganzen den letzten Schliff verleihen. Je länger ich darüber nachdachte, umso besser gefiel mir diese Idee, also habe ich jetzt Stoffe gekauft. Die Batiks hatten genau die richtigen Farben, und ich habe schon zwei Flying Geese Einheiten fertig. Ein bisschen schwierig war es mit den Maßen. Da die Blöcke in cm genäht sind, ich hier aber in inch nähe, ist die fertige Blockgröße mit 9 3/4 inch ziemlich krumm. Also muss ich die Flying Geese über Papier nähen (oder in diesem Fall Windelvlies), ansonsten wird das nie exakt. Bisher gefällt es mir gut... ich brauche noch sechzehn weitere Einheiten, und dann werden Blöcke herumgeschoben, bis mir das Layout zusagt.

Heilende Herzen

Die Post brachte mir eine wunderbare Überraschung. Seit bestimmt bald fünfzehn Jahren bin ich Mitglied bei den Quiltsternen. Und einige der Mitglieder dort haben Trostblöcke für mich genäht. Sabine hat sie gesammelt und mir einen dicken Umschlag über den Teich geschickt. Zu den Blöcken gab es auch jede Menge Briefe und Karten, und einige der Näherinnen teilten eigene Erfahrungen mit mir, um mir Mut zu machen.

 

I received a wonderful surprise in the mail. I have been a member of a German mailing list for quilters for about fifteen years, I think. And some of the members there made quilt blocks for me, Sabine collected them and sent a big envelope over to me. There were a lot of cards and letters, and some of the ladies even shared their own experiences to encourage me. 

I am determined to turn them into a quilt before my further treatment starts. It is going to be a simple setting, just sashing and a border, the deadline isn't too far away anymore, so I already bought the fabrics.

Ich bin fest entschlossen, die Blöcke in einen Quilt zu verwandeln, bevor die Behandlung weitergeht. Es wird ein ziemlich einfaches Layout werden, nur Sashing und ein Rand. Viel Zeit für die Vollendung habe ich nicht, aber die Stoffe sind schon mal gekauft.

Dessert Time

Dessert Time ist ein Quiltmuster von Eleanor Burns, für das ein Layer Cake und eine Jelly Roll verwendet werden. Dieser Quilt ist hier der große Hit, wir verkaufen eine Menge Fertigpackungen davon. Normalerweise gehöre ich nicht zu den Leuten, die Precuts kaufen, ich habe mich eher immer gewundert, was die Leute alle mit dem ganzen Zeug machen. Bis dann eines Tages eine junge Frau im Quiltshop auftauchte, die den Dessert Time Quilt aus der Stoffserie "Fresh Cut" genäht hatte... und plötzlich wurde ich dann doch in die Welt der Precuts hineingezogen.

 

Dessert Time is the name of a quilt pattern by Eleanor Burns which uses a Layer Cake and a Jelly Roll. That seems to be the big hit here, we are selling a lot of kits for this one. Now I am usually not someone who buys precuts, in fact I have always wondered what exactly people do with all of those. And then a young lady showed up who had made the Dessert Time quilt using the Fresh Cut fabric line... and I was sucked into the precut world after all.

This happened some time ago when I had no mind at all for sewing but we still had Fresh Cut Layer Cakes and Jelly Rolls and also all the fabrics of the line on bolts. So I figured I'd better stash some away for later, should the mood to make a quilt ever strike again. I even bought matching fabric for the backing from the same line. And last weekend my sewing mojo made a little appearance. I was feeling good, so I grabbed my Layer Cake and started sorting fabric squares.

Das ist jetzt schon eine Weile her und zu einer Zeit passiert, als ich so gar keinen Kopf für's Nähen hatte. Aber da wir zu dem Zeitpunkt noch Layer Cakes und Jelly Rolls von Fresh Cut hatten und auch die ganze Stoffserie noch auf Ballen, dachte ich mir, ich sichere mir mal lieber was für bessere Zeiten, falls ich doch mal wieder Lust zum Nähen bekomme. Sogar passenden Rückseitenstoff habe ich gekauft. Und siehe da, am letzten Wochenende fühlte ich mich gut und hatte plötzlich Lust, in Stoffen zu wühlen. Also habe ich den Layer Cake auseinandergenommen und angefangen, die Stoffe zu sortieren.

Piecemakers Quilt

Durch die Arbeit im Quilt Shop habe ich jeden Tag neue Ideen, aber kaum Zeit, sie alle umzusetzen. Bald fängt auch wieder die Zeit der Quiltshows an, und im Shop liegen einige Fertigpackungen, die vorher noch in Quilts verwandelt werden müssen. Ich habe mich freiwillig für ein Projekt gemeldet und bekam dann die Packung für den "Piecemakers Quilt", einen Quilt, den ich selbst so nie genäht hätte.

 

Working at a quilt shop gives me new ideas daily, I just don't have the time to work on them all. The quilt show season will start soon, and there are a few more samples that need to be made from kits before then. I volunteered to make one and ended up with a kit for the "Piecemakers Quilt", something I would never have sewn on my own.

First of all, I love tiny appliqué, and this quilt is made with blocks from a panel that pretend to be appliqué but in reality are just printed... totally not my thing. And then the colours are nowhere near my usual palette. But since I just have to follow a pattern without any chance of playing around with fabrics and colours, it should not be a problem. We will see :)

Zum einen liebe ich ja winzigste Applikationen, und die Blöcke dieses Quilts werden aus einem Panel geschnitten und sehen zwar aus wie appliziert, sind aber gedruckt. Und dann sind das auch so gar nicht meine Farben. Aber da ich ja nur der Anleitung folgen muss und keine Gelegenheit haben werde, mit Farben und Stoffen zu spielen, sollte das kein Problem sein. Ich bin gespannt :)

Halloween rückt näher

Ich versuche immer noch, einen Stopffuß für Caroline, die Singer 403 Maschine, zu beschaffen. Jetzt habe ich einen Laden ungefähr eine Stunde von hier gefunden, und die Besitzerin wusste nach einem Blick sofort, welchen Fuß ich für die Maschine mit der Schrägnadel brauche. Leider musste sie ihn bestellen und schätzte, es würde ungefähr drei Wochen dauern. Also immer noch nichts mit Freihandnähen.
 

I am still trying to get a darning foot for Caroline, my Singer 403 sewing machine. I finally found a shop about an hour away, and the owner knew right away which foot I needed for the slant machine. Unfortunately they had to order it. They guessed it would take about three weeks. So still no free-motion stitching in my near future.

On the way back I stopped at Hamels for some fabric. I have never made anything specifically for Halloween but it is a big thing over here, so I bought some orange and black fabrics for placemats. 

Zum Trost habe ich dann auf dem Rückweg bei Hamels angehalten und ein bißchen Stoff gekauft. Ich habe noch nie etwas speziell für Halloween genäht, aber das hat hier drüben auch einen ganz anderen Stellenwert, also dachte ich, fange ich mal mit orange und schwarzen Platzsets an.

Und bezüglich Halloween... gleich südlich der Grenze in Washington State haben wir diese witzige Dekoration gesehen. Der Busch war vorher als Footballfan der Seattle Seahawks dekoriert und wurde dann Anfang Oktober in eine Hexe umgewandelt. Wir kommen an dem Haus jedesmal vorbei, wenn wir in die USA fahren, ich bin schon gespannt, was denen noch so alles einfällt. 

Speaking of Halloween, just south of the border in Washington State we saw this funny Halloween decoration. That bush was a Seattle Seahawks fan before and got turned into a witch in early October. We pass the house every time we drive to and from the US, so I can't wait to see what other decoration ideas they might come up with.

Die Stöffchen werden langsam mehr

Und wieder einmal ging es zum Stoffkaufen. Diesmal zusammen mit einer Freundin, sie hatte mich gefragt, ob ich einen Babyquilt für sie nähen könnte. Sie möchte ihn an ihre im Juni geborene Großnichte verschenken. Wir waren sowohl im Fabricland als auch bei Hamels und haben dort etwa zwei Stunden damit verbracht, Stoffballen herauszuholen, zu vergleichen, zu verwerfen. Aber letztendlich haben wir uns doch entschieden, und ich nahm alle Materialen mit nach Hause, die ich für einen pink-und-mit-Feen Babyquilt brauche.

 

And again I went fabric shopping. This time with a friend, she had asked me if I would make a crib quilt for her, she wants to give one to her new great-niece. We went to both Fabricland and Hamels and spent about two hours dragging out bolts of fabrics, comparing them, trying to decide. But we finally managed to make up our minds, and I went home with all the materials for a girly pink-and-fairy crib quilt.

Wieder da

Mir ist schon bewusst, dass ich ziemlich plötzlich und ohne Erklärung verschwunden bin und lange nicht mehr gebloggt habe... aber jetzt bin ich wieder da und werde auch hoffentlich bald wieder nähen. In den letzten eineinhalb Jahren habe ich gar nichts genäht. Wir haben uns auf einen Umzug nach Kanada vorbereitet und sind nun auch endlich hier angekommen. Unsere Kisten sind allerdings noch nicht hier, also bin ich ein bißchen eingeschränkt in dem, was ich nähen kann, wenn ich nicht alle Sachen komplett neu kaufen möchte. Aber ich freue mich darauf, endlich wieder zu nähen. Und ich weiß, dass ich von den Quilts, die ich vor zwei Jahren noch genäht habe, keine Bilder mehr gepostet habe. Die sind irgendwo auf einer externen Festplatte, wenn ich sie finde, werden sie nachgereicht.

I know I pretty much disappeared without an explanation and was gone for a long time... but I am back now and will hopefully start sewing again soon. I haven't done any sewing in about 18 months. We prepared for a move to Canada in the meantime and have finally arrived. All our boxes are not here yet so I am limited in what I can do without buying everything again but I am really eager to start sewing again. And I know I haven't posted pictures of the finished quilts I made two years ago. I am pretty sure I have them on some external drive somewhere. I will post them as soon as I find them.
 

We moved to British Columbia, and this is my new local quilt shop: Hamels Fabric & Quilting. Lots and lots of good stuff and very nice people too. I had decided to throw my cutting mat and rulers out and get new ones here, they had been about 15 years old anyway. And although Canada is officially metric, and they sell fabric by the metre, rulers and cutting mats are all imperial here. It doesn't really matter to me, I can deal with either.

Wir sind nach British Columbia gezogen, und das hier ist mein "neuer" Quilt Shop: Hamels Fabric & Quilting. Dort gibt es Unmengen an Stoffen und Zubehör, und die Leute sind sehr nett. Meine Schneidematte und Lineale hatte ich in Deutschland noch entsorgt, die waren etwa 15 Jahre alt und nicht mehr in bestem Zustand. Und obwohl Kanada offiziell metrisch ist und auch Stoff meterweise verkauft wird, sind Lineale und Schneidematten alle in Inch. Mir ist das ziemlich egal, ich kann sowohl metrisch als auch imperial nähen.

Topflappen oder Ofenhandschuhe brauche ich noch, und ja, es ist mir schon klar, dass ich die wohl billiger kaufen könnte, aber das macht ja keinen Spaß. Das silberne Zeug ist das Vlies, das haben sie empfohlen, weil die silberne Schicht Hitze reflektieren soll. Darunter ist es weiß und fühlt sich an wie Thermolam. Also werde ich als erstes offizielles Projekt Ofenhandschuhe nähen. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob ich schon alles gekauft habe, was ich brauche, ich bin so daran gewöhnt, dass ich alles im Vorrat habe. Aber der Quilt Shop ist nur etwa 15 Minuten entfernt, da kann also nichts passieren.

I need potholders or oven mitts, and yes, I know I could buy them for less than the material costs, but where is the fun in that? That silvery stuff is the batting, they recommended it because it is supposed to reflect heat. So oven mitts are officially going to be my first project. I am not sure I have everything I need, I am so used to having all the supplies handy. But the quilt shop is about 15 minutes away, so if I need more stuff, it will be really easy to get.
