Beautiful British Columbia (und Alberta)

Genähtes habe ich nicht zu zeigen, und Zeit, mich durch die Bilder der Quilt Show zu arbeiten, die ich im Juni besucht habe, habe ich auch nicht, daher gibt es heute nur ein Sammelsurium von Urlaubsbildern von unserem Road Trip in die Nationalparks von British Columbia und Alberta. Nach unserer Rückkehr haben dann Windows Updates meinen Computer zerschossen, und ich bin immer noch damit beschäftigt, alles neu zu installieren. Zum Glück sichere ich immer artig meine Daten, daher hielten sich die Verluste in Grenzen. Ich hoffe, dass sich die Lage im Laufe der Woche normalisiert.

I have nothing new to show and no time to look through my quilt show pictures from June, so today I will just post a miscellaneous array of pictures from our road trip to the National Parks of British Columbia and Alberta. After we got back Windows Updates decided to crash my computer, and I am still busy reinstalling everything. Luckily I am quite diligent about backing up my data, so I didn't lose much. Hopefully things will be back to normal later this week.

Homecoming - Endlich fertig

Endlich habe ich es geschafft, den "Homecoming" Wandbehang zu beenden, und ich finde ihn immer noch super schön. Es ist in meinen Augen die beste Interpretation der kanadischen Flagge, die mir je begegnet ist, und die Idee, Kanada-Gänse hinzuzufügen, ist einfach genial.

I finally finished the "Homecoming" wall hanging, and I still love it. It is the most beautiful interpretation of the Canadian flag that I have ever seen, and the idea of adding Canada geese is just genius. 

And in other news... remember the "Dancing Garland" wall hanging I made before Christmas? It was made using a free pattern by a designer in Ohio, Sandy Petsche, and on Saturday, Sandy found the picture on my website. She liked it so much that she took the time to call me and tell me how wonderful she thought my version was. It is always nice to hear that people like my work but I was thrilled to hear it from the designer herself. Needless to say that her call made my day. 

Und ansonsten... wer kann sich noch an "Dancing Garland" erinnern, den Wandbehang, den ich spontan vor Weihnachten genäht hatte? Das war ein freies Muster, das ich online gefunden hatte, entworfen von einer Designerin in Ohio, Sandy Patsche. Und am Wochenende hat Sandy zufällig das Bild auf meiner Website gefunden, und sie fand meine Version so schön, dass sie sich tatsächlich die Zeit genommen hat, mich anzurufen und mir das zu sagen. Es ist immer schön, wenn man Lob hört, aber von der Designerin persönlich ist dann doch etwas Besonderes, darüber habe ich mich sehr gefreut. 

Wiedergefunden

Die fehlenden Teile des "Homecoming" Wandbehangs hatte ich schon vor längerer Zeit wiedergefunden, was fehlte, war bisher die Motivation, das Teil endlich zu beenden. Die Anleitung in meinem Kit enthielt einen Fehler, und das Ahornblatt in der Mitte war zu groß und passte nicht in die Umrandung. Zu groß ist natürlich besser als zu klein, und der Fehler war auch einfach zu beheben, aber ich musste mich erst mal aufraffen. Die Gänse hatte ich ja schon im letzten Jahr zusammengesetzt, und jetzt ist das Top ganz fertig und muss nur noch gequiltet werden. Dieser Wandbehang ist hier sehr populär, und eine meiner Kundinnen fragte mich letzte Woche, wie ich denn meinen gequiltet hätte. Ich musste zugeben, dass er immer noch unfertig in einer Schublade lag und versprach, nach dem Quilten ein Bild zu schicken. Ein bisschen Druck von außen hat mir dann endlich den nötigen Motivationsschub verpasst. :)

I found the missing pieces of the "Homecoming" wall hanging quite some time ago but never the motivation to actually finish it. The pattern in my kit had a mistake, and the maple leaf didn't fit into the cut out maple leaf, it was too big. It was easy enough to fix when I finally decided to do it. I had already assembled the geese last year, and now I put everything together, it just needs to be quilted. This is an extremely popular pattern here, and one of my customers asked me last week how I had quilted mine. I had to admit that it was still unfinished but promised to send her a picture when I was done. Nothing like a little pressure to make me get to work! :)

Let It Snow

Das Lower Mainland von British Columbia hat ein sehr mildes Klima, besonders verglichen mit dem Rest von Kanada. Es schneit nur sehr selten hier, und unsere durchschnittlichen Wintertemperaturen liegen knapp unter 10°C, also nicht wirklich kalt. Im letzten Winter hatten wir vielleicht drei Tage, an denen Schnee gefallen ist, und der ist dann auch ganz schnell wieder geschmolzen. Und das ist auch gut so, denn auf Schnee ist hier niemand vorbereitet. Und niemand kann auf Schnee und im Schnee fahren. Sobald eine Schneeflocke vom Himmel fällt, bricht hier das Chaos aus. Die ganze letzte Woche hatten wir hier ein "Arctic Outflow Warning". Es herrschten Minusgrade, und der Wind war eisig, aber Schnee fiel kaum. Jedenfalls bis Freitag.

The Lower Mainland of BC has the mildest climate in Canada. We rarely get snow here, and our average winter temperatures are in the upper 40s, so not really cold. Last winter we had maybe three days of snow, and it all melted again quickly. Which is good because nobody here is prepared to handle snow. And nobody can drive on snow. As soon as people see a few snowflakes, it's pure chaos. We have been under an "Arctic Outflow Warning" this past week, and while it was quite cold with temperatures below freezing and a very icy wind, we didn't see much snow. Until Friday.

It started snowing early Friday morning but not enough to close the schools. It snowed pretty much continuously with just a few breaks until Sunday morning. It's been a long time since I have seen that much snow, and I have certainly never seen it in the Lower Mainland. We thought we had a lot of snow on Saturday when I took the first pictures. We couldn't believe the amount that fell overnight. I can't even get out of our neighbourhood in my small car, I would just get stuck on the road right in front of the house. According to the forecast, there isn't anymore snow in the near future. It is sunny and quite pretty outside now, a winter wonderland.

Am frühen Freitagmorgen begann es dann zu schneiden. Die Schulen blieben aber offen, denn so schlimm war es (noch) nicht. Es schneite dann fast ununterbrochen mit nur ein paar Pausen bis Sonntagmorgen. Es ist schon lange her, dass ich soviel Schnee gesehen habe, und das war ganz sicher nicht hier im Lower Mainland. Am Sonnabend habe ich dann während einer Schneepause die ersten Bilder gemacht, und wir hielten das für eine große Menge Schnee. Und dann wachten wir am Sonntagmorgen auf und konnten gar nicht glauben, wieviel mehr noch über Nacht gefallen war. Mit meinem kleinen Auto komme ich aus unserem Viertel gar nicht mehr raus, da würde ich direkt vor dem Haus auf der Straße im Schnee steckenbleiben. Laut Wetterbericht soll aber kein weiterer Schnee mehr fallen, und es ist kalt und sonnig und sieht richtig schön aus.

All About Them Books (No Kindle)

Wir haben hier im Ort einen wunderbaren Bucheladen, the Book Man. Es gibt dort neue und gebrauchte Bücher. Man richtet sich ein Konto ein, bringt seine Bücher nach dem Lesen zurück und bekommt dafür Punkte gutgeschrieben, die man in weitere Bücher umsetzen kann. Die Angestellten sind alle sehr nett, und eine Katze namens Nietzsche gibt es auch. Und jetzt haben sie ein Video gemacht, das sich zum Hit entwickelt. Es läuft hier auf allen Fernsehkanälen und wird wie verrückt auf Facebook geteilt. Den Text umgeschrieben und Regie geführt hat eine junge Frau, die die Nichte meiner Chefin im Quilt Shop ist. Einfach mal reinsehen, ist total lustig.   

We have a wonderful bookstore here in town, the Book Man. They have some new and many used books, you get a free account there, bring back your books and get trading credit. The staff is very friendly and they have a lovely store cat called Nietzsche. And now they have a video that is going viral. It is on all the TV channels here and going crazy on Facebook. The lyrics were re-written and the video directed by a young woman who happens to be the niece of my boss at the quilt shop. Just take a look, it is awesome.

Mal wieder Besucher

Als Stadtkind bin ich immer noch beindruckt, wenn hier Wild einfach so durch den Garten läuft. Letzte Woche hatten wir zweimal Besucher, haben es aber nur einmal geschafft, Photos zu machen.
 

As a city girl I am still impressed by deer wandering through our backyard. We had visitors twice last week but only managed to take pictures once.

Frohes Neues Jahr

... wünsche ich zunächst. Wir waren zum "traditionellen" Neujahrsbrunch im River's Edge Restaurant in Harrison Mills. Dort waren wir zum zweiten Mal, also noch nicht wirklich eine Tradition, aber es wird ganz sicher eine. Es ist ein wunderbarer Ort, und das Essen ist toll. Heute hatten wir auch phantastisches Wetter, kalt, aber sonnig, und die schneebedeckten Berge waren wunderschön.

 

Happy New Year, everyone! We went to the River's Edge Restaurant in Harrison Mills for our "traditional" New Year's brunch. It was the second time there but we are going to make it a tradition. It is a lovely place, and the food is awesome. The weather was really nice today, cool but sunny, and the snow-topped mountains were very pretty.

Here is a little project I made over Christmas. It is a McKenna Ryan design called "Warm Up". It was a kit from the quilt shop, and I volunteered to make it. It is going to be a gift for the little bistro up the block from the shop. It was fast and easy, I did it the "normal" McKenna Ryan way, fusing everything together, then stitching around all shapes, quilting at the same time.

Und hier kommt noch ein kleines Projekt, das ich über Weihnachten genäht habe. Es ist ein McKenna Ryan Design und heißt "Warm Up". Es war eine Fertigpackung vom Quilt Shop, die alle benötigten Stoffe enthielt, und ich habe mich freiwillig zum Nähen gemeldet. Es ist als Geschenk für das kleine Bistro um die Ecke vom Shop gedacht. Das Nähen ging schnell und problemlos. Ich habe es auf die "normale" McKenna Ryan Art gemacht, also alles aufgebügelt und dann rundherumgenäht und beim Applizieren gleichzeitig gequiltet.

Jetzt weiß ich auch, warum McKenna Ryan Steam A Seam 2 empfiehlt. Das Zeug ist wirklich super. Im Internet habe ich gelesen, es wäre "das tollste Produkt neben der Schere, das je für die Nähwelt erfunden wurde", und dem stimme ich zu, nachdem ich es probiert habe. Ich hatte ja auch nie Probleme mit dem deutschen Vliesofix, aber jetzt glaube ich nicht, dass ich noch mal ein anderes Klebevlies verwenden werde. Steam A Seam 2 hat Papier auf beiden Seiten der Klebeschicht und muss bis zum allerletzten Schritt nicht gebügelt werden. Man zeichnet einfach die Formen auf, zieht eine Papierschicht ab, drückt sie auf den Stoff (hält von allein), schneidet aus, zieht die zweite Papierschicht ab, setzt die Teile auf einer Bügelunterlage zusammen und bügelt erst, wenn alles passt. Das Zeug ist klebrig, aber man kann alle Teile bewegen und das Klebevlies auch wieder entfernen, solange noch nichts gebügelt ist. Besonders für die kleinen Fitzelteile von McKenna Ryan ist es ideal.

 

And now I know why McKenna recommends Steam A Seam 2. That stuff is amazing. Somebody on the web called it "the most wonderful product ever invented for the sewing world besides scissors", and I agree. I was okay with the German Vliesofix but now I don't think I can ever go back to another fusible. Steam A Seam 2 has paper on both sides, and there is no need to iron anything until the very last step. Just trace, peel off one paper side, stick to fabric, cut out, peel of the second paper layer, assemble the pieces on a teflon ironing sheet and then iron when you are satisfied. The stuff is sticky but can still be moved around and removed from the fabric before you iron it. It is especially handy for all the small, intricate McKenna Ryan pieces.

Thanksgiving in Kanada

Ich hinke immer noch hinterher... dieser Post hätte schon vor einer Woche veröffentlich werden sollen... Also, Thanksgiving in Kanada wird am zweiten Montag im Oktober gefeiert. Es war unser erstes richtiges Thanksgiving hier, und wir beschlossen, uns an kanadischen (oder zumindest nordamerikanischen) Rezepten zu versuchen. Ein Laden hier hatte Turkey Breast Roasts im Angebot, und Stuffing nach Wahl gab es umsonst dazu, also habe ich da einen bestellt.

 

I am still behind in posting... this should have been posted a week ago... Anyway, Thanksgiving in Canada is celebrated on the second Monday in October. It was our first real Thanksgiving here, and we decided to try and cook Canadian (or at least North American) recipes. The local meat store offered turkey breast roasts and even stuffed them for free with a stuffing of your choice, so I ordered one there.

I found great recipes online for maple-bacon glazed turkey, maple walnut cranberry sauce, candied sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie. I hear that Canadian pumpkin pie is different from American, not sure if that is true. The Canadian version has lots of spices and is very yummy. I had never tried pumpkin pie before, this is not something you get in Europe, and I like it a lot.

Online habe ich jede Menge tolle Rezepte gefunden für Maple-Bacon Glazed Turkey, Maple Walnut Cranberry Sauce, Candied Sweet Potatoes und Pumpkin Pie. Ich habe gehört, dass sich kanadische Pumpkin Pie von amerikanischer unterscheidet, weiß aber nicht, ob das stimmt. Die kanadische Version hat jedenfalls jede Menge Gewürze und schmeckt sehr lecker. Ich hatte vorher noch nie Pumpkin Pie gegessen, in Europa habe ich noch nie eine gesehen, und ich bin völlig begeistert.

Wir verbrachten fast den ganzen Tag mit Kochen, aber das machte nichts, es regnete draußen sowieso. Unser erstes kanadisches Thanksgiving Dinner war ein voller Erfolg, und es hat viel Spaß gemacht, neue Sachen auszuprobieren. 

We spent most of the day cooking which was okay because it was raining anyway. Our first Canadian Thanksgiving dinner was a huge success, and it was very interesting to try different things.

Besucher

Ich hinke ein wenig mit dem Posten hinterher, aber wir sind gestern abend erst aus dem Urlaub zurückgekommen, und leider ging die Wäsche dann heute doch vor...
 

I am a little behind with posting but we just returned from a week of vacation, and getting the laundry done was more important today...

Before we left we had these visitors in the neighbourhood one morning, taking a leisurely stroll, inspecting the construction still going on. And apparently we have a bear living in our backyard. Well, technically it is not our backyard, that is just a little patch of grass. But the house is on a hillside too steep for more buildings, so we look out at a wooded slope. And our neighbour saw a black bear about ten yards away in mid-August. No picture yet, but I will post that for sure if I ever get one. That is Canada :)

Bevor wir losgefahren sind, tauchten eines Morgens plötzlich diese Besucher auf, spazierten gemütlich durch die Nachbarschaft und inspizierten die Baustellen in der Umgebung. Und offenbar lebt auch ein Bär in unserem Garten. Naja, nicht wirklich in unserem Garten, das ist nur ein kleiner Grasfleck hinter dem Haus. Aber das Haus liegt an einem Hügel, der zu steil ist für weitere Häuser, so dass wir auf einen bewaldeten Hang blicken. Unser Nachbar hat dort Mitte August in etwas 10m Entfernung einen Schwarzbären gesehen. Ein Bild existiert noch nicht, aber wenn ich eins bekomme, poste ich es auf jeden Fall. Das ist eben Kanada :)
