Trenchcoat 103 aus Burda 02/2007

Heute liefere ich noch ein Teil nach, dass ich im Frühjahr genäht habe, als ich nicht gebloggt habe. Ich hatte mir ja schon letztes Jahr auf dem Stoffmarkt einen Schnäppchenstoff zugelegt mit der Idee im Hinterkopf, einen Trenchcoat daraus zu nähen. Ausgewählt habe ich Mantel 103 aus der Februar-Burda 2007.

This is a project I made this spring while I was not blogging. Last year at the fabric market I got a good deal on a fabric which I bought with a trenchcoat in mind. I chose coat 103 from the February 2007 issue of Burda WOF.

I love the details, especially the gathered skirt part. This might not exactly be a classic trenchcoat but I like it. It is not a particularly fitted piece of clothing so I did not have to fuss much about alterations. And since we had to wait for summer until the end of June this year I already got to wear it a lot.

Mir gefallen die Details so gut, besonders das eingereihte Rockteil. Das mag zwar kein klassischer Trenchcoat mehr sein, aber mir gefällt's. Da das Teil nicht besonders passformsensibel ist, waren auch die Änderungen schnell gemacht. Und weil der Sommer in diesem Jahr bis Ende Juni auf sich warten ließ, konnte ich den Mantel auch schon häufig tragen.

Gerade konnte ich meinen Junior-Fotografen überreden, ein paar Bilder von mir mit Kleid und Mantel zu machen. Ich liebe beide Teile! Das Kleid ist locker und leicht und bei diesen Temperaturen gerade richtig. Und der Mantel ist auch ein Knaller, wenigstens morgens ziehe ich ihn über, auch wenn es nicht nötig wäre, einfach weil er so schön ist.

I just talked my son into taking a few pictures of me wearing the new dress and coat. I love both! The dress is light and cool, exactly right for summer temperatures. And the coat is a real hit! Unfortunately it is too warm to really wear it but at least I can put it on in the morning when it is still a little cooler.

Der Mantel ist endlich fertig! Gerade habe ich den letzten Knopf angenäht. Der Endspurt hat sich doch sehr in die Länge gezogen, zumal ich offenbar völlig unkonzentriert war und lauter dumme Sachen gemacht habe, z.B. das Futter falsch herum eingenäht. Für die Verarbeitung würde ich sicher keinen Preis gewinnen, aber er ist fertig und tragbar und außer mir sieht das vermutlich wieder mal keiner.

I finished the coat this morning! I just sewed on the last button. It was rather tedious work during the last few days, I guess I wasn't really into it and made several stupid mistakes like putting the lining in inside out. I would never win a prize for workmanship for this coat, but it is done and wearable and I am probably the only one who sees the flaws.

My thoughts on Ottobre patterns:

• Ottobre seems to work with less ease on the patterns than Burda WOF. They have the same measurement charts but I would always start with one size bigger with Ottobre from now on.
• I have trouble following Ottobre's instructions. Maybe I am just used to Burda WOF or maybe it is because of the translation, I don't know. But if you know a little about sewing it is not difficult to put the clothes together without understanding the instructions.
• What I really like about Ottobre is that both coat and dress came with a lining. Burda has so many dress, jacket and coat patterns without lining, I always make the lining pattern myself but in most cases I don't understand why they don't line the clothes.
  

Mein Fazit zu Ottobre:

• Offenbar ist Burda mit den Bequemlichkeitszugaben sehr viel großzügiger. Obwohl die Maßtabellen bei Burda und Ottobre gleich sind, würde ich bei Ottobre in Zukunft immer von einer Nummer größer ausgehen.
• Mit den Anleitungen in der Ottobre komme ich überhaupt nicht klar. Das mag daran liegen, dass ich Burda gewöhnt bin, vielleicht auch an der Übersetzung, ich weiß es nicht. Aber mit ein bißchen Näherfahrung ist es nicht so schwierig, die Teile auch ohne Anleitung zusammenzusetzen.
• Positiv ist, dass beide Ottobre-Schnitte Futter vorsahen. Bei Burda verstehe ich immer nicht, warum so viele Kleider, Jacken und Mäntel ungefüttert gearbeitet werden. Das ist auch nicht wirklich ein Problem, dann mache ich mir den Futterschnitt eben selbst, aber ich kann es einfach nicht nachvollziehen.

Ich muss zwar bei Ottobre viel mehr ändern als bei Burda, aber das Ergebnis ist die Mühe wert. Kleid und Mantel gefallen mir sehr gut, und ich würde die Arbeit jederzeit wieder auf mich nehmen. Ich werde zukünftig auf jeden Fall schauen, was die Ottobre so bietet, kann ja nichts schaden, eine Alternative zur Burda zu haben.

I have to make more alterations in Ottobre patterns than in Burda's but it is definitely worth it. I like dress and coat very much, and I would do the work again any time. I will absolutey check their future issues for interesting projects.

Knöpfe beziehen

... ist gar nicht so schwierig. Mit einer Fertigpackung (gibt es in verschiedenen Knopfgrößen) habe sogar ich das ohne Hilfe geschafft, obwohl ich z.B. bei Ösen und Nieten ein hoffnungsloser Fall bin.

Today I made my first fabric-covered buttons. It was much easier than I thought, I am completely helpless with eyelets but the buttons I managed by myself.

I bought a kit (available in different button sizes) that contained a blue and a white tool and top and bottom parts of the buttons. They even provided a template for cutting the fabric.

In der Packung sind Ober- und Unterteile der Knöpfe sowie ein blaues und ein weißes "Werkzeug". Eine Schablone für die Stoffgröße ist auf der Rückseite der Packung ebenfalls dabei.

Der Stoffkreis wird mit der rechten Seite nach unten auf das weiße Werkzeug gelegt. Das Knopf-Oberteil wird mit der Oberseite nach unten darauf gelegt und mit dem blauen Werkzeug in die Aussparung des weißen Teils hineingedrückt.

I put the fabric circle right side down onto the white tool and then added the top part of the button upside down. With the blue tool the button is then pushed into the white tool.

Then you are supposed to tuck the fabric between the small teeth of the top part of the buttom. The manufacturer recommends using scissors for that but I found a screwdriver more comfortable.

Der an den Seiten hochstehende Stoff wird dann vorsichtig zwischen die kleinen Zähnchen am Rand des Knopf-Oberteils gedrückt. Prym empfiehlt, dazu eine Schere zu benutzen, ich fand einen Schraubenzieher praktischer.

Wenn der Stoff gut verteilt und festgestopft ist, kommt das Unterteil des Knopfes drauf, so dass der Namenszug "Prym" lesbar ist. Das Ganze wird dann mit dem blauen Werkzeug kräftig zusammengedrückt. Es macht unüberhörbar "klack", und schon ist der Knopf fertig bezogen.

When the fabric is tightly tucked the bottom part of the bottom is added (hint: the manufacturer's logo has to be readable). Then the bottom part is pushed onto the top part with the blue tool. With a loud snap the button is finished.

Just take it out of the white tool and admire your work :-)

Er wird einfach aus dem weißen Teil entnommen und sieht schön aus :-)

Ansonsten habe ich mich heute abend eher dumm angestellt. Ich hasse es ja sowieso, kleine Schrägband-Tunnelchen für die Schlaufen zu nähen und diese dann zu wenden. Zu allem Überfluss habe ich den ersten fertigen Tunnel artig nach Anleitung in 6 cm lange Stücke zerschnitten, bis ich auf die Idee kam, mal meine Knopfgröße zu überprüfen. Natürlich waren die Knöpfe größer als in der Zeitung angegeben, und 8 cm lange Stücke wären nicht verkehrt gewesen. Also konnte ich nochmal von vorn anfangen. Aber das übt ungemein, der letzte Tunnel flutschte schon fast von selbst.

I spent the rest of the evening trying to avoid desasters. I hate making bias tunnels and turning them inside out for the loops. After I finished the first tunnel I followed the instructions without thinking and cut it into 2 1/4" pieces. Then I realized I should have measured my buttons first. Of course they were bigger than the ones they used in the magazine. 3 1/8" would have been more suitable for my buttons. Well, so I had to start over again. But now I have a lot of practice and am getting really good at turning these stupid tunnels.

Then I almost put the loops on the coat facing in the wrong direction. I had just pinned them and was ready to start basting when I realized that. That was close!

Auch die fertigen Schlaufen hätte ich dann beinahe verkehrt herum angenäht. Das ist mir aber zum Glück schon beim Stecken aufgefallen, bevor ich mit dem Heften begonnen hatte, so dass mir da wenigstens das Trennen erspart blieb.

Den ersten Knopf habe ich mal probeweise an die Schlaufe geheftet. Sieht gut aus, finde ich.

Merkwürdige Proportionen

... hat das Probemodell des Mantels, das ich gestern abend genäht habe. Es ist so, wie ich vermutet habe, besonders im Hüftbereich ist es zu eng. Das sieht man schon an Marcy, in natura ist es noch schlimmer. Ich habe den Schnitt mal ausgemessen und dann mit der Ottobre-Tabelle verglichen. Wie die auf die Idee kommen, dass eine Bequemlichkeitszugabe im Hüftbereich von 5 cm ausreichend ist, ist mir ein Rätsel. Das reicht ja kaum für ein Kleid, geschweige denn einen Mantel.

As I suspected I have to do some adjusting on the coat pattern as you can see in the muslin. The hip area is way too tight. It is even worse in reality than it looks on Marcy. I measured the pattern and compared the results to Ottobre's measurement chart. I have no idea why they think that adding 2" in the hip area is enough ease in a coat. That is barely enough for a dress.

But it made me realize that I am probably too harsh on Burda WOF patterns. It is not their fault that I have to adjust the pattern to my forward sloping shoulders, my very round back and my sway back. At least the proportions, length and width, work for me with their patterns.
Ich weiß jetzt zu schätzen, dass bei Burda-Schnitten wenigstens die Proportionen stimmen. Da muss ich nur die figurbedingten Änderungen vornehmen wie runder Rücken und hängende Schultern, aber Länge und Weite kommen wenigstens hin.

Aber um nicht nur zu meckern, will ich auch noch das Gute verkünden: Ich hatte noch nie einen Schnitt, der nach meinen Standardänderungen so gut an meinen runden Rücken und mein Hohlkreuz gepasst hat. Jetzt werde ich mal an den Seitennähten etwas zugeben und den Brustabnäher verlegen (der läuft nämlich auch ins Nirgendwo und nicht auf den Brustpunkt zu) und vor allem den Stoff in die Waschmaschine werfen, damit ich später noch loslegen kann.

But on the bright side, I have never had a pattern that fit my very round upper back and my lower sway back as well after my standard alterations as this Ottobre coat. I will go and add some width to the side seams and move the bust dart (which is a little too high) and especially throw my fabric in the washer so I can hopefully start later today.

I did not make sleeves for the muslin. I will just add a little length, otherwise I am confident that they will fit.

Die Ärmel habe ich mir beim Probemodell gespart, da gebe ich einfach ein bißchen Länge dazu, ansonsten bin ich zuversichtlich, dass sie passen.

Mantelmodell aus Papier

Der Mantelschnitt ist kopiert, gefaltet und anprobiert. Ich habe diesmal eine Nummer kleiner genommen als bei dem Kleid. Die Maßtabelle von Ottobre ist mit der von Burda identisch, allerdings glaube ich, dass ich auch hier wieder an Stellen basteln muss, die bei Burda passen. Im Brustbereich kommt es mir etwas eng vor, ebenso an der Hüfte, dafür ist an der Taille genug Platz. Und der Ärmel könnte ein paar Zentimeter länger sein. Aber das geht mir bei Burda auch so, offenbar habe ich (zu) lange Arme.

I traced the coat pattern, folded a paper coat and tried it on. I worked with one size smaller than I did with the dress. Ottobre's measurement chart is the same as Burda's but I think I will have to change a few things with the coat pattern that fit me with Burda WOF patterns. The bust area seems to be a little tight, probably also the hip area, the waist might be fine or maybe a little too wide. And the sleeve is at least 1" too short. But I have the same problem with Burda, obviously my arms are (too) long.
