Nach langer Zeit

... habe ich es endlich mal wieder geschafft, mit den Zick-Zack-Zicken für ein Wochenende nach Wahlsdorf zu fahren. Wir sind vor vier Jahren nach Kanada gezogen, daher dürfte es ziemlich genau fünf Jahre her sein, dass ich zum letzten Mal dort war. Als es sich abzeichnete, dass ich in diesem Jahr nach Deutschland kommen würde, habe ich mich mit Anke in Verbindung gesetzt und den Flug dann passend gebucht, nachdem sie mir die Daten mitgeteilt hatte. Es war so schön, alle wiederzusehen und genügend Zeit zum Reden zu haben. Ich hatte kanadische Stoffe (Cantik Batiks) für alle mitgebracht und kaufte in Wahlsdorf dann deutsche Stoffe (Westfalenstoffe) als Mitbringsel für meine kanadischen Freundinnen. Und ein schönes Sortiment Wolle habe ich auch gekauft... viel Platz war nicht in meinem Koffer, aber die Wolle ist ja leicht und passte noch hinein, und die bunten Farben sind so hübsch.

After a long time I managed to go to Wahlsdorf again for a weekend with my friends. We moved to Canada four years ago, so I am pretty sure that I haven't been to Wahlsdorf in five years. When I knew I would go to Germany this year I contacted Anke and then booked the flight after she sent me the dates. It was wonderful to see everyone again and catch up. I had brought Canadian fabrics (Cantik Batiks) for everyone and bought German fabrics (Westfalenstoffe) to take back for my Canadian friends. And I bought a nice assortment of wool roving... space in my suitcase was limited, and they were light and fluffy and so pretty.

Noch mehr Herzen

Diese Woche kam eine weitere Überraschung an: noch ein dicker Umschlag voller Herzblöcke. Diese kamen von meinen Quiltfreundinnen vom Sternetreffen Ost, mit denen wir einmal im Jahr ein Nähwochenende verbracht haben. Dazu gehören auch meine Zick-Zack-Zicken, mit denen weitere Nähwochenenden und Treffen und Projekte anstanden

A nice surprise arrived this week: another envelope full of healing hearts quilt blocks. This time it was sent by my quilting friends from northeastern Germany that I used to go on a quilt retreat with once a year. A smaller group of them, all of them from Berlin and the surrounding area, were my quilt group, we spent two additional weekends per year sewing together and had a lot of things going on, like fabric dyeing and group projects.

I received twenty-two hearts this time, the block size a little bigger than the first ones. At first I thought I would just make two more blocks and then go for a 4x6 layout. But then I figured that would be too close to the other layout and decided to go for 3x6 and use the remaining four blocks as cornerstones for the border. This is just a rough idea, we will see where it takes me. I am totally undecided yet, but it is a beginning.

Diesmal habe ich 22 Herzen bekommen, die etwas größer sind als die ersten. Zuerst dachte ich, ich könnte einfach noch zwei weitere Blöcke nähen und dann ein 4x6 Layout machen. Aber dann war mir das dem anderen Quilt zu ähnlich, und ich kam auf die Idee, 3x6 Blöcke zu legen und die restlichen vier in die Ecken des Randes zu packen. Das ist jetzt nur eine erste, noch sehr unausgegorene Idee, mal sehen, wo sie mich hinführt. Ich bin noch sehr unentschlossen, aber es ist ein Anfang.

Wahlsdorf

Am letzten Wochenende waren wir wieder in Wahlsdorf. Diesmal haben die Eisheiligen voll zugeschlagen, so dass wir gut zum Nähen kamen :) Aber immerhin hat es nicht geregnet. Zu erzählen gibt es nicht viel, dafür aber viele schöne Bilder.
 

And again we spent another great weekend in Wahlsdorf. It was rather chilly this time so warm weather didn't distract us from sewing :) I will not bore you with lengthy descriptions but show a few projects for inspiration instead.

And the biggest news of the weekend: Kerstin joined the Featherweight Club and proudly presented her white "ice princess". Hm, I think I need a white one, too...

Und die größte Neuigkeit war Kerstins "Eisprinzessin". Heimlich, still und leise hat sie sich eine Featherweight zugelegt, noch dazu eine weiße. Hm, in der Farbe könnte ich auch noch eine gebrauchen... 

Zickentreff bei Meg

Gestern hatte Meg uns eingeladen, und wir hatten einen schönen Nachmittag und Abend bei ihr. Ihre Tochter hatte Cupcakes für uns gemacht, und Meg hatte einen tollen Kuchen für uns gebacken. Der Boden bestand aus Amaretti Keksen, darüber war eine Schicht aus Philadelphia und oben drauf pürierte Himbeeren - hmm, lecker!

Yesterday Meg invited us to her house for some sewing and chatting. Her daughter had made beautiful cupcakes for us, and Meg's cake was delicious. It was made from Amaretti cookies (Google tells me these are called "macaroons" in English), cream cheese and pureed raspberries - yummy!

I had managed to sew the binding on my blue scrap quilt Thursday night so I took it with me to stitch it down by hand. I know I have complained about that last step of the quilt making process several times, and I still don't like it any better but I got half of it done yesterday, yay.

Ich hatte am Donnerstag abends noch schnell das Binding an meinen blauen Restequilt genäht und ihn dann gestern mitgenommen, um es auf der Rückseite per Hand anzunähen. Wie sehr ich diesen letzten Schritt hasse, der mich von der Fertigstellung des Quilts trennt, ist ja kein Geheimnis, also erspare ich Euch heute mein Gemecker. Immerhin habe ich die Hälfte gestern schon geschafft, es ist also Land in Sicht.

Hier sind noch zwei von den schönen Sachen in Megs Nähzimmer. Das erste ist ein alter Stuhl, den sie gekauft und mit Batikstoffen neu bezogen hat. Der ist so toll, denn hätte ich am liebsten mitgenommen.

Here are two of the beautiful things in Meg's sewing room: The first is an old chair that she bought and refurbished with batik fabrics. Too bad it was too big to sneak it out of the door, I would have loved to take it home with me.

And the other one is an unfinished Grandmother's Flower Garden that she uses to cover her sewing machine. The hexagons are tiny! I didn't measure them but they looked smaller than my 1/2" birthday hexagons.

Und dann hat sie noch dieses angefangene Grandmother's Flower Garden Top, mit dem sie ihre Nähmaschine abdeckt. Das sind winzige Hexagons! Nachgemessen habe ich nicht, aber sie sahen noch kleiner aus als meine 1/2" Geburtstagshexagons.

Wahlsdorf

Am Wochenende war wieder Treffen der Zick-Zack-Zicken in Wahlsdorf. Am Sonnabend war allerbestes Nähwetter, es hat in Strömen gegossen. Am Sonntag kam dann der Frühling zurück und belohnte Renate und mich mit einem wunderbaren Sonnenaufgang. Als Frühaufsteher saßen wir schon vor dem Frühstück wieder an der Nähmaschine. Genäht wurde viel, gelacht noch mehr, und Helena, die zum ersten Mal dabei war, brachte für jede von uns eine kleine Zick-Zack-Zicke mit. Meine bewacht jetzt das Nähzimmer und passt hoffentlich auf, dass die Katzen keinen Unfug treiben :)

I spent last weekend in Wahlsdorf again, another Zick-Zack-Zicken retreat. On Saturday we had the best sewing weather, it rained very hard all day. On Sunday, spring decided to come back for one day in November. Renate and I watched a beautiful sunrise and then squeezed a little sewing in before breakfast. We had a lot of fun, and Helena brought a cute little "Zick-Zack-Zicke" (Zicke means goat in English) for each of us. Mine is guarding the sewing room now, trying to prevent my cats from doing mischief :)

Färbefest in Michendorf

Kerstin hatte wieder zum Färbefest nach Michendorf geladen, und das Wetter war in diesem Jahr auf unserer Seite, es war warm und sonnig. Den Arbeitstag haben wir mit einer Kaffeepause begonnen, wir waren ja schließlich nicht in Eile.

Once again, Kerstin had invited us to dye fabrics in her garden. The weather was beautiful, warm and sunny. We started the work day with a coffee break, nobody was in a hurry.

I had never seen Renate's finger pin cushion before, isn't that a cute idea?

Zum ersten Mal gesehen habe ich heute Renates originelles Fingernadelkissen.

Schließlich begann der Färbespaß dann doch, und nach den Unmengen von Stoffen, Garnen und Wolle, die sich schließlich in der Sonne stapelten, hat Anke recht, wenn sie von einer wahren Färbeorgie spricht.


Finally we started to actually dye, and fabrics, threads and wool started to pile up. Anke called it a dyeing frenzy, and she was quite right.

I have wanted to try sun printing for some time now, and Sabine volunteered to bring her dyes and show me how it was done.

Ich wollte schon lange mal Sun Printing probieren, und Sabine hatte angeboten, ihre Farben mitzubringen und es mir zu zeigen.

Bettina und Susanne waren in einem Wollfärberausch und hatten schon während der Woche vorgearbeitet. Helena war auch da und konnte Profitipps zur Wolle und zum Sun Printing geben.
Bettina and Susanne had taken a wool dyeing class last weekend and dyed lots of wool during the week. This year, Helena was dyeing with us and gave us valuable tips on wool dyeing and sun printing.

And Kerstin's beautiful garden was a great setting, as usual. Thank you, Kerstin, for having all of us over every year and all the work that you do to make that possible.

Und Kerstins wunderschöner Garten war wie immer eine tolle Kulisse. Danke, liebe Kerstin, für die Riesenarbeit, die Du Dir jedes Jahr mit uns auflädst.

Zicken-Treff bei Anke

Gestern hatte Anke uns eingeladen, und nach der Hitze des Tages saßen wir entspannt im Schatten in ihrem schönen Garten und tranken Ipanema. Das ist nicht nur ein brasilianischer Strand, wie ich gestern gelernt habe, sondern offenbar auch die alkoholfreie Caipirinha-Variante. Super lecker und erfrischend, und das, wo ich eigentlich gar kein Ginger Ale mag.

Yesterday we followed Anke's invitation and spent a nice summer evening sitting in her garden sipping Ipanema. That is not only a beach in Brazil but also the alcohol-free version of Caipirinha, as I found out yesterday. Very yummy and refreshing, I was surprised how good it was given that I don't really like Ginger Ale.

Anke had made small fabric strawberries to decorate the table and gave one to all of us to take home. Aren't they cute? :)

Als Tischdekoration hatte Anke kleine Erdbeeren genäht, und jede durfte eine mit nach Hause nehmen. Sind die nicht süß? :)

Natürlich wurden auch ein paar Projekte gezeigt. Meg hat ihren Wollquilt ja schon auf ihrem Blog präsentiert, aber die Blöcke, die ihre Tochter bestickt hat, sind da nicht so gut zu erkennen gewesen. Dabei sind sie ganz entzückend, liebevoll bis ins kleinste Detail gestaltet.
When quilters get together, there is always a little show and tell. Meg brought her wool quilt that she had already presented on her blog. I saw the picture but didn't pay the embroidered blogs that her daughter had made the attention they deserved. They are adorable, flawless work, stitched with love.

Anke's Double Irish Chain quilt is also progressing nicely. The hand-quilted feather wreath design is really beautiful. A lot of work, but the result is sure worth the effort.

Ankes Double-Irish-Chain macht auch gute Fortschritte, die handgequilteten Federkränze sind einfach zu schön. Auch wenn es eine Menge Arbeit ist, das Ergebnis lohnt den Aufwand.
