Inzwischen auch fertig

... sind alle vier Frühchenquilts. Gequiltet habe ich wie immer nicht viel, sie sollen ja weich und kuschelig sein, daher habe ich standardmäßig nur diagonal durch die Blöcke gequiltet und den Rand großflächig gestippelt. Nächste Woche schicke ich sie los.

I finished all four preemiequilts in the meantime. Since they are supposed to be soft and cuddly I didn't quilt much, just some cross hatching and meandering. I will mail them out next week.

Das vierte Top ist auch geschafft

Mir läuft immer noch die Zeit davon, aber irgendwie habe ich es doch geschafft, das vierte Frühchentop auch zu nähen. Über das Quilten muss ich mir hier keine Gedanken machen, da bei Frühchenquilts weniger mehr ist. Also erhalten alle vier die gleiche Behandlung, diagonal durch die Blöcke und ein bisschen Stippling im äußeren Rand, das geht - hoffentlich - schnell.

I am still constantly running behind getting all the things on my list done  but I finally managed to finish the fourth and last preterm baby quilt top. Quilting will be easy, for these quilts less is more, so I will just cross hatch the blocks and meander the outer border. And since all four will be quilted the same way, this should be fast... I hope.

Und Nummer Drei

Irgendwie habe ich es tatsächlich geschafft, noch ein drittes Frühchentop zu nähen. Eins mache ich noch, und dann quilte ich sie alle auf einmal. Aber mir ist aufgefallen, dass der zweite Restequilt (den ich für das We Care Programm meiner anderen Gilde nähe), vor den Frühchenquilts fertig sein muss, daher werde ich mich wohl zunächst darauf konzentrieren.

Somehow I managed to whip up a third top for the preterm baby quilt program. I am going to make one more, and then I will quilt them all at the same time. But since I just realized that my other scrap quilt (that I am going to donate to my other guild's We Care program) is due before the baby quilts, I will have to focus on that one first.

Und noch ein Frühchentop

Im Moment habe ich so viele Auftragsarbeiten abzuarbeiten, dass ich kaum Zeit finde, mich mit meinen eigenen Sachen zu beschäftigen. Aber irgendwie habe ich es doch geschafft, noch ein Frühchentop zu nähen. Die fröhlichen Farben gefallen mir gut, aber ich habe ein Problem mit dem Rand. Ich hatte nicht genug Stoff, um vier Randstreifen zu schneiden, also musste ich stückeln. Und ich musste zwei Stücke verwenden, auf denen das Design eine andere Ausrichtung hat als der Rest. Wenn ich das sehe, dann fordert meine Zwanghaftigkeit sofort, das aufzutrennen und den Rand anders zu gestalten. Aber da ich dafür keine Zeit habe, muss ich das irgendwie ignorieren. Und ja, ich weiß, dass das vermutlich niemandem sonst auffällt und das alles nur in meinem Kopf stattfindet :)

I am so busy quilting right now that I barely have time to sew my own stuff. But somehow I managed to piece another preterm baby quilt. I like the cheerful colours in this one but it does bug me that I didn't have enough fabric to cut four border strips without piecing. Now I have two pieces in there that have a different orientation, and I can't look at it for too long without my OCD kicking in. If I had more time, I would probably take it apart and do something different. And yes, you don't need to tell me that nobody will ever see this or be bothered by it. I know. It's just me :)

Ein Frühchentop

Als wir noch in Deutschland waren, hatte ich ja jede Menge Frühchenquilts genäht. Nach dem Umzug nach Kanada habe ich dann angefangen, für die "We Care" Programme der örtlichen Gilden Spendenquilts zu nähen, aber jetzt wollte ich doch mal wieder ein paar Frühchenquilts nähen, so zwischendurch. Das erste Top ist inzwischen fertig.

While I was still in Germany I used to make lots of quilts that were donated to neonatology wards in Germany and Austria. Here the guilds have their "We Care" programs, and I am making quilts for those too but I wanted to make another round of small quilts for the European program. Here is the first top that I pieced.

Frühchenquilts

Auch in diesem Jahr haben wir in Blossin wieder Frühchenquilts für die Krankenhäuser in Halle gesammelt, die Antje betreut. Mit 41 Quilts (oder waren es 42?) konnten wir Antje nach Hause schicken. Hier zeige ich eine Auswahl.

It is already a tradition to bring donation quilts to our annual quilt meeting. Antje is the contact person for two hospitals, the quilts are donated to prematurely born babies and their parents to give a little warmth and comfort during that difficult time. We sent her home with 41 (or was it 42?) quilts this year. Here is a selection:

Die letzten beiden Frühchenquilts

... sind auch noch vor Blossin fertig geworden. Nachdem ich es nicht geschafft hatte, die Bindings über Weihnachten in Tschechien anzunähen, lagen sie hier ewig unvollendet herum. Wann ich mich endlich aufgerafft habe? In der Woche vor dem Treffen natürlich. Unter Druck arbeite ich immer am besten :)

I managed to finish the last two baby quilts in time for our annual retreat. You might remember that I had planned to stitch the bindings over Christmas on our trip to the Czech Republic. I finished four of the six and could never work up the motivation to pick these up again after the winter blues hit me in January. I finally finished them a few days before the retreat. I have always worked best under pressure :)

Der Plan war gut

... nur mit der Ausführung hat es nicht so ganz geklappt. Eine Woche Tschechien, sechs Früchenquilts, da dachte ich, wenn ich außer an den Reisetagen jeden Tag eine Einfassung umnähe, bin ich am Ende des Urlaubs mit allen fertig. Das hat natürlich nicht funktioniert, die Hälfte habe ich geschafft, und den vierten habe ich inzwischen hier zu Hause beendet. Fehlen noch zwei, aber das wird auch noch.

I had planned to finish all six preterm baby quilts during our week in the Czech Republic. Needless to say that the plan was good but didn't work out. I came back with three finished quilts and stitched the binding of the fourth one at home. The other two will be finished sooner or later, I am sure.

Lebenszeichen

Ich habe zwar lange nichts mehr gepostet, aber das bedeutet nicht, dass ich nichts genäht hätte, ich hatte nur sonst auch genug zu tun. Mein Ziel ist es jedes Jahr, bis spätestens zum 1. Dezember alle Weihnachtsgeschenke zu haben. Das gibt mir dann Zeit, mich entspannt zurückzulehnen und zuzusehen, wie alle anderen wie kopflose Hühner durch die Gegend rennen und sich vor Weihnachten noch einmal richtig Stress machen :) Mein Mann ist zwar regelmäßig leicht genervt, wenn ich schon im Oktober von Weihnachtsgeschenken rede, aber wenn dann der Dezember kommt, sind wir beide zufrieden, dass alles frühzeitig erledigt ist. Ganz in Ruhe haben wir dann noch sieben Sorten Plätzchen gebacken, an jedem Wochenende ein oder zwei Sorten.

I haven't posted in a long time but I did get some sewing done, I was just too busy with other things to post. I try to finish my Christmas shopping early every year, that means I want everything done by Dec 1. Then I can lean back and relax while everyone else is running around like chickens with their heads chopped off to get ready for Christmas :) My husband finds it annoying when I start talking about Christmas gifts in October but when December comes and everything is done we are both glad we got an early start. That gives us time to bake lots of cookies, we made seven different types, one or two batches every weekend.

I also made lots of Christmas cards but it is not Christmas yet, so I will not show them until tomorrow. And then - and this is almost a miracle - I basted and quilted all six quilt tops I made in Wahlsdorf in November. And I even added all six bindings, just have to stitch them down by hand, but most of the work is done.

Pünktlich zum ersten Advent waren auch alle Weihnachtskarten genäht, aber noch ist nicht Weihnachten, also wird auch noch nichts gezeigt. Und dann habe ich - und das grenzt an ein Wunder - tatsächlich alle sechs Frühchentops aus Wahlsdorf geheftet und gequiltet und gleich auch noch mit einer Randeinfassung versehen. Nur mit der Hand umgenäht werden müssen sie noch, aber das Schlimmste ist geschafft.

Weihnachten verbringen wir wieder in Tschechien, daher habe ich mich auch beeilt mit den Randeinfassungen. Das ist dann mein Handnähprojekt für den Urlaub. Gefahren sind wir schon am Mittwoch gleich nach Schulschluss, was eine gute Entscheidung war. Die Autobahnen waren relativ leer und in gutem (= schneefreiem) Zustand. Das Erzgebirge haben lieber umfahren, was zwar mehr Kilometer bedeutete, aber freie Straßen. Weihnachtsstress haben wir hier gar nicht, die einzige Aufgabe heute bestand darin, Kartoffelsalat zu machen. Das ist erledigt, so dass ich jetzt guten Gewissens gar nichts tun kann.

On Wednesday we drove to the Czech Republic, we like to spend Christmas here in a little cottage. Finishing the binding on the six quilts will be my sewing project for the holidays. I was a little worried about driving in this weather but Wednesday was the best day to go, not much traffic and no snow or ice on the roads. We also drove a detour to avoid going through the mountains which meant more miles to drive but better road conditions. The holidays are very relaxed here, the only thing I had to do today was make potato salad. That is done, and now I can enjoy doing nothing for the rest of the day.

Frühchentop-Ausbeute

Das Treffen in Wahlsdorf ist immer eine gute Gelegenheit, neue Frühchentops zu produzieren. Sechs Stück hatte ich zugeschnitten, fünf davon wurden vor Ort fertig, das letzte habe ich zu Hause noch genäht. Zum einen habe ich die beiden Stoffe verarbeitet, die Julie von "The Best Kept Secret" gespendet hatte.

I made new preterm baby quilt tops during the Wahlsdorf weekend. I had already cut the fabrics for six tops at home and finished five of them until Sunday and the last one at home. For the first two tops I used the fabrics that Julie of "The Best Kept Secret" had donated.

At our last regional retreat in March Thea from Hamburg gave me a whole bunch of fabrics for preterm baby quilts. One of them was a panel with four goose blocks. I guess I could have turned this panel into one quilt as a whole but I decided to cut it up and make four tops, I like it better that way.


Von Thea aus Hamburg hatte ich beim letzten Sternetreffen-Ost einen ganzen Stapel Stoffe für Frühchenquilts bekommen. Ein Panel mit vier Gänse-Blöcken habe ich zerschnitten und vier Tops daraus genäht. Man hätte vermutlich auch das Panel als Ganzes zu einem Quilt verarbeiten können, aber so gefällt es mir besser.

Geschafft!

Alle vier Frühchenquilts sind endlich fertig! Wahlsdorf kann kommen, ich habe schon meine Stoffe durchgesehen und die Planung für die nächsten Tops begonnen.
