Oh Canada

Ich habe es tatsächlich geschafft, den Canadian Mystery Quilt gerade noch rechtzeitig zu Kanadas 150. Geburtstag fertigzustellen. Hier sind noch ein paar Photos des fertigen Projekts.

I managed to finish the Canadian Mystery Quilt just in time to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday. Here are a few pictures of the finished project.

Zufrieden

... bin ich nun endlich mit dem Canadian Mystery Quilt. Ich habe tatsächlich einen Batikstoff gefunden, den ich für den äußeren Rand verwenden konnte, und mir gefällt es besser als der rot-schwarze Ahornblatt-Stoff, den die Designerin vorgesehen hat. Die Blöcke enthalten viel blau, und der Stoff nimmt diese Farbtöne auf und rahmt die Blöcke ein, ohne die Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zu ziehen. Der rot-schwarze Stoff war doch sehr eigenwillig und lenkte meiner Meinung nach zu sehr ab.

I am quite happy with the way my Canadian Mystery Quilt turned out. I found a nice batik to use for the outer border, and I think it looks better than the black and red maple leaf fabric that the designer used. There is lots of blue in the blocks, and the fabric I used picks up these colours nicely. I wanted it to frame the blocks but not take attention away from them. In my opinion the red and black fabric was very much "in your face", drawing your eyes to the outside and away from the blocks. 

The longer I look at the picture of the quilt on the pattern, the more I see why she chose this particular fabric but I still can't see it for my version. Since I received more than a yard in the finishing kit I decided to use it for the backing. This is also the "official" backing fabric, and when it was announced I didn't order any of it because it didn't speak to me, even as a backing fabric. But now that I have it I need to use it. My original plan was to add more of the solid black batik that was used for the sashing between the blocks but it wasn't available at the store right now. So I chose another red and black batik from Shania Sunga's Canada line to make the backing big enough.

Je länger ich mir das Bild auf der Anleitung ansehe, um so mehr verstehe ich die Stoffwahl der Designerin, aber für meine Version gefällt es mir immer noch nicht. Da ich aber mehr als einen Meter mit dem Finishing Kit erhalten habe, habe ich beschlossen, den Stoff für die Rückseite zu verwenden. Es ist auch der "offizielle" Rückseitenstoff, aber schon als das verkündet wurde, hat er mich nicht angesprochen, daher habe ich ihn nicht bestellt. Aber nachdem ich ihn jetzt habe, muss ich ihn auch irgendwie verwenden. Eigentlich wollte ich den einfachen schwarzen Batikstoff kaufen, der für das Sashing zwischen den Blöcken verwendet wurde, um den Rückseitenstoff zu vergrößern, aber dieser war leider nicht vorrätig. Also habe ich einen anderen rot-schwarzen Batikstoff aus der Canada-Serie von Shania Sunga dafür gewählt.

Und dann habe ich auch noch den Ontario-Block aufgepeppt. Der hatte mir ja schon nicht so richtig gefallen, als ich ihn im letzten Oktober zusammengesetzt hatte, irgendwie hatte ich ihn mir anders vorgestellt. Und mir ist dann tatsächlich eine Idee gekommen, die ich heute ausprobiert habe. Ich habe von einem Photo die Silhouette des CN Tower in Toronto abgezeichnet, aus einem Stoffrest von einem anderen Block ausgeschnitten und auf den Ontario Block gebügelt. Jetzt habe ich einen Hauch von Toronto am Horizont, der aber das eigentliche Motiv des Blocks nicht stört. Mir gefällt der Block dadurch gleich viel besser. Ich hoffe, dass ich es schaffe, nächstes Wochenende zu quilten, dann hätte ich vielleicht sogar noch genug Zeit, um das Binding bis zum Canada Day zu schaffen.

And I also added another detail to the Ontario block. I wasn't happy with it when I made it last October, I had expected something different. And I had an idea along the way and decided to try it. I traced the silhouette of the CN Tower in Toronto, cut it out of one of the leftover pieces from another block of the Canadian Mystery Quilt and fused it to the block. Now I have a touch of Toronto on the horizon. It doesn't take away from the motif of the block, and I like it much better now. I hope to get everything quilted next weekend, then I would hopefully have enough time to put the binding on before Canada Day.

Zwischenstand

Viel zu zeigen habe ich heute nicht, mir fehlt einfach die Zeit... aber ich habe immerhin so zwischendurch den Canadian Mystery Quilt soweit zusammengesetzt, wie es ging, nur der äußere Rand fehlt jetzt noch. Das Layout gefällt mir gut, die schmalen schwarzen Streifen zwischen den Blöcken rahmen diese gut ein. Und morgen gehe ich auf die Suche nach einem passenden Stoff für den Rand. Vielleicht schaffe ich es ja doch noch bis Canada Day... wir werden sehen.

I don't have much to show today, I just don't have the time... but I have assembled the Canadian Mystery Quilt as much as I could, it is just missing the outer border now. I like the layout, and I really like the small black sashing strips. And I am going to look for border fabric tomorrow. So maybe I will get it done until Canada Day... that might still work.

And I have also finished quilting the Butterfly Quilt and am currently sewing the binding. Here is a little preview, it should be done by next week.

Der Schmetterlingsquilt ist auch fertig gequiltet, und im Moment nähe ich am Binding. Hier ist schon mal eine kleine Vorschau, nächste Woche sollte er fertig sein.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Saskatchewan

Hier folgt nun der 13. und letzte Block des Canadian Mystery Quilt, der Saskatchewan darstellt, eine der Prärieprovinzen Kanadas. Als ich die Packung abgeholt habe und das Bild des Blocks sah, hat er mir gar nicht gefallen, die Farben sahen alle gleich aus und verliefen sich ineinander, mir fehlte ein bisschen Kontrast. Aber jetzt, nachdem ich ihn aus den Stoffen zusammengesetzt habe, gefällt er mir schon viel besser. In Wirklichkeit sehen die Stoffe deutlich besser aus als auf dem Bild. Das Finishing Kit mit den Stoffen für das Sashing und den Rand habe ich auch schon, aber der Stoff für den äußeren Rand gefällt mir überhaupt nicht. Sonst habe ich ja wenig an Shania Sungas Designs auszusetzen, ihre Arbeit gefällt mir fast immer gut, aber farblich passt das Design in meinen Augen nicht zum Rest des Quilts, daher werde ich ihn nicht verwenden. Eigentlich wollte ich den Quilt ja bis zum Canada Day am 1. Juli fertig haben, aber ob ich bis dahin den richtigen Stoff für den Rand gefunden habe, steht noch in den Sternen.

This is the 13th and last block of the Canadian Mystery Quilt. It represents Saskatchewan, one of the prairie provinces. When I first saw a picture of the block, I didn't like it very much, all the pieces seemed to blend into each other with not enough contrast. But now that I made it from actual fabrics I changed my mind, it looks much better than I thought it would. I have also received the finishing kit with the sashing and border fabrics but as much as I loved Shania Sunga's designs, I am not happy with her choice of border fabric. My plan was to have the quilt finished by Canada Day on July 1 but I am not sure if I can find the right fabric for the border until then.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - British Columbia

Den nächsten (und vorletzten) Block des Canadian Mystery Quilt habe ich kurz vor meinem Abflug nach Deutschland abgeholt und an diesem Wochenende endlich zusammengesetzt. Diesmal stellt der Block "unsere" Provinz British Columbia dar, und er gefällt mir richtig gut. Zu sehen sind die Berge und das Meer, Orcas und ein Kermodebär. Dieser Bär ist eine Unterart des amerikanischen Schwarzbären und kommt nur in einer sehr begrenzten Gegend in BC vor. Außerdem ist er auch eines der offiziellen Symbole der Provinz.

I received the next block of the Canadian Mystery Quilt right before I left for Germany and I assembled it this weekend. This time it represents "our" province British Columbia, and I love the block design. It shows the mountains, the ocean, orcas and a spirit bear (Kermode bear), the official mammal of the province and a rare subspecies of the American black bear that only lives in a small part of the BC coastal regions.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Quebec

Hier ist ein weiterer Block des Canadian Mystery Quilt. Wir nähern uns dem Ende, es fehlen nur noch zwei Blöcke. Diesmal ist das Thema Quebec, die einzige Provinz Kanadas, in der Französisch die einzige offizielle Sprache ist. Dargestellt sind historische Gebäude, die beiden Kirchen sind die Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal und die Kirche Notre Dame Des Victoires in Quebec City. Mir gefällt der Block gut, es ist ein schöner Kontrast zu all den anderen Blöcken, die sich mehr auf die Natur konzentriert haben.

Here is another block of the Canadian Mystery Quilt. We are getting close to the end, there are only two blocks left. This one represents Quebec, the one province in Canada where French is the only official language. Pictured are several historic buildings, the two churches are Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal and Notre Dame Des Victoires in Quebec City. I like this block a lot, it is quite different from the rest that focus on nature.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Manitoba

Und endlich gibt es auch hier den nächsten Block. Diesmal gab es ein Problem mit dem grünen Hintergrundstoff im Kit, die Ausrichtung des Musters war falsch, und ich konnte nicht damit leben, dass meine Hügel vertikal statt horizontal verliefen. Es wurde aber problemlos umgetauscht, und nun ist auch der Manitoba-Block fertig. Manitoba ist eine der Prärie-Provinzen Kanadas, und dargestellt sind hier Bisons und Krokusse, zwei der offiziellen Symbole der Provinz. Auf dem Photo sieht der Block richtig gut aus, in Wirklichkeit ist jedoch der Kontrast zwischen den Bisons und dem Hintergrund nicht groß genug, so dass alles ein bisschen ineinander verschwimmt. Aber ansonsten gefällt mir der Block sehr gut, besonders da mich die Bisons immer an Yellowstone erinnern.

And here is finally the next block. This time there was a problem with the green background fabric, it was cut with the pattern facing the wrong direction, and I couldn't live with the hills in vertical direction on my block, so I had to wait for a replacement piece. This block represents Manitoba, one of Canada's prairie provinces. The bison is the official mammal of the province and the crocus is the provincial flower. The picture of the block looks quite nice, in reality I find that the contrast between the bison and the prairie colours is not big enough, it all blends into each other without the bison standing out. But other than that I like the block very much, and the bison remind me of Yellowstone.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Newfoundland and Labrador

Hier kommt endlich der nächste Block des Canadian Mystery Quilt, diesmal repräsentiert er Newfoundland und Labrador. Der Block ist schon Anfang November erschienen, aber irgendwo gab es Probleme, ich habe ihn erst um Weihnachten herum bekommen. Der nächste Block erschien dann Mitte Dezember, und gerade heute wurde ich benachrichtigt, dass ich ihn abholen kann. Da war ich dann doppelt froh, dass ich diesen Block am letzten Wochenende geschafft habe, ich wollte nicht allzu sehr ins Hintertreffen geraten. Dieser Block zeigt die Küste, einen tauchenden Buckelwal und zwei Papageitaucher (das ist der offizielle Vogel der Provinz). Wir nähern uns dem Ende, es sind nur noch vier Blöcke übrig!

I finally finished the next block of the Canadian Mystery Quilt, this time it represents Newfoundland and Labrador. It was released in November but there was some trouble somewhere along the line and I never received it until Christmas. The next block was released in mid-December, and I was notified today that it is ready for pick up. I am quite happy that I managed to make this block last weekend, I am trying not to get too far behind. The block shows the coastline, a humpback whale tail and two puffins (the provincial bird of Newfoundland and Labrador). Only four blocks left to make!

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Ontario

Den nächsten Canadian Mystery Block habe ich gleich hinterher geschoben, ich wollte nicht wieder so trödeln. Diesmal ist das Thema Ontario, und ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob mir der Block gefällt. Irgendwie ist er im Vergleich zu den anderen etwas enttäuschend. Der Vogel ist ein Eistaucher (Common Loon), und das ist der offizielle Vogel der Provinz, aber der Rest ist mir ein Rätsel. Zwei Stühle mit Blick über den See... sieht ja ganz nett aus, aber mir fehlt da der Bezug zu Ontario, den Block hatte ich mir anders vorgestellt. Ich bin zu dem Schluss gekommen, dass es wohl den Algonquin Provincial Park darstellen soll. Also wenn ich an Ontario denke, dann fallen mir Toronto, Ottawa und die Niagarafälle ein. Vielleicht wollte die Designerin ja bewusst in der Natur bleiben und die großen Städte weglassen, aber irgendwie spricht mich dieses Motiv nicht an.

And here is the next Canadian Mystery block that I finished right away, I didn't want to get too far behind. This time it features Ontario, and I am not really sure if I like this block. It seems a little disappointing compared to the others so far. The bird is a common loon, the official bird of the province but I can't really make sense of the rest of the block. Two chairs on a deck looking out on the lake... it looks nice enough but I don't really get the Ontario connection. I have come to the conclusion that it is supposed to show Algonquin Provincial Park. When I hear Ontario I think of Toronto and Ottawa and Niagara Falls. Maybe the designer was trying to leave the big cities out of the quilt but still, somehow this block doesn't feel right to me.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Prince Edward Island

Ich hänge ein bisschen hinterher mit meinen Blöcken für den Canadian Mystery Quilt, aber inzwischen habe ich es doch endlich geschafft, den Block für Prince Edward Island zu beenden, der bereits Anfang August erschienen ist. Der nächste Block ist Mitte September erschienen und schaut mich auch schon ganz vorwurfsvoll an. Prince Edward Island ist eine der drei Maritime Provinces und die kleinste Provinz Kanadas. Der Block stellt die Küste dar und zwei der offiziellen Symbole von PEI, die Vogelart Blue Jay (auf Deutsch Blauhäher) und die Blume Pink Lady's Slipper (auf Deutsch Frauenschuh).
 

I am a little behind with my Canadian Mystery Quilt blocks, I finally finished the block for Prince Edward Island which was published in early August. The next block was published in mid-September and makes me feel guilty every time I see it. Prince Edward Island is one of the three Maritime Provinces and the smallest Canadian province overall. The block represents the coastline and two of the province's symbols, a blue jay and pink lady's slippers.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Yukon

Nach mehr als drei Monaten folgt nun endlich der nächste Block des Canadian Mystery Quilt. Diesmal geht es um den Yukon: Eis und Schnee, Berge, ein Elch und Polarlichter. Ich habe gleich losgelegt und den Block zusammengesetzt... es war ganz schön fummelig, die Teile für den schneebedeckten Baum auszuschneiden.

 

After more than three months it is finally time for another Canadian Mystery Quilt block. This time it represents the Yukon: ice and snow, mountains, a moose and northern lights. I unpacked the kit right away and got it done... it was quite a pain to cut out the pieces for the snow-covered tree.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Northwest Territories

Im März waren wir gut beschäftigt, und ich hatte fast keine Zeit zum Nähen und zum Bloggen schon gar nicht. Aber wenigstens den nächsten Canadian Mystery Block, der in diesem Monat veröffentlicht wurde, habe ich geschafft. Diesmal geht es um die Northwest Territories. Die Farben im Photo sind nicht besonders gut gelungen, in Wirklichkeit ist der Kontrast zwischen den Eisbären und dem Schnee im Hintergrund größer, und auch der Himmel mit den Nordlichtern sieht viel besser aus, als das Bild es vermuten lässt.

March has been a very busy month, and I have almost no time to sew, let alone to blog. But the next installment of the Canadian Mystery Quilt was published, and I managed to squeeze that in. This time the block features the Northwest Territories. The contrast between the polar bears and the snowy background fabric is much better in reality, it just didn't photograph well. The northern lights sky fabric has the same problem, it looks much better than the picture shows.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Nova Scotia

Letzte Woche wurde der nächste Block des Canadian Mystery Quilt veröffentlicht, diesmal geht es um die Provinz Nova Scotia. Leuchttürme liebe ich ja sowieso, daher war ich entzückt, dass die Designerin den Leuchtturm von Peggy's Point als Motiv gewählt hatte, zusammen mit Buckelwalen vor einem schönen Sonnenaufgang.

 

The next installment of the Canadian Mystery Quilt was published last week, and here is my Nova Scotia block. I love lighthouses, so I was delighted to see the Peggy's Point Lighthouse featured in Nova Scotia's block along with humpback whales and a beautiful sunrise.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Alberta

Am 15. Dezember wurde der 3. Block des Canadian Mystery Quilt veröffentlicht, und ich habe meine Packung gleich mit nach Hause genommen und zusammengesetzt. Diesmal geht es um Alberta, unsere Nachbarprovinz. Neben den Ölfeldern im Norden ist es vor allem Cowboy Country mit vielen Farmen und Pferden und natürlich den Rocky Mountains.

Block 3 of the Canadian Mystery Quilt was released on December 15, and I took my kit home right away and assembled it. The featured province this time is Alberta, our neighbour. Alberta is cowboy country, lots of farms and horses, and of course the spectacular Rocky Mountains.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Nunavut

Der zweite Block des Canadian Mystery Quilt wurde letzte Woche veröffentlicht, und sobald die Packungen bei uns ankamen, habe ich meine auch gleich mit nach Hause genommen und zusammengesetzt. Diesmal geht es um Nunavut, das größte und neueste Territorum Kanadas. Dargestellt sind ein Inuksuk und ein Alpenschneehuhn, der offizielle Vogel des Territoriums. (Ich lerne hier jetzt endlich mal, wie die ganzen Vögel eigentlich auf Deutsch heißen.) Im Hintergrund ist Mount Thor auf Baffin Island zu sehen.

 

The second block of the Canadian Mystery Quilt was published last week, and as soon as we received the kits, I took mine home and assembled it. It represents Nunavut, the largest and newest territory of Canada and depicts an Inuksuk and a ptarmigan, the official bird of the territory. The mountain on the left is Mount Thor on Baffin Island.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - New Brunswick

Am 1. Juli 2017 wird Kanada den 150. Geburtstag feiern. Die kanadische Designerin Shania Sunga hat für diesen Anlass einen Mystery Quilt gestaltet. Es gibt dreizehn Blöcke, einen für jede der zehn kanadischen Provinzen und drei Territorien. Die einzelnen Teile werden mit Vliesofix aufgebügelt und erst mal nicht weiter festgenäht. Mir gefielen Idee und Design sehr gut, also habe ich mich für das Programm angemeldet und den ersten Block auch schon zusammengesetzt. Ich denke, ich werde nach der McKenna Ryan Methode weiterarbeiten und freihändig um die Teile nähen und gleichzeitig quilten, wenn alle drei Lagen geheftet sind. Meiner Meinung nach wird das auch die Designerin empfehlen. Ich habe schon ein paar andere Anleitungen von ihr gesehen, und sie mag diese Methode auch sehr. Der erste Block steht für New Brunswick und stellt die Hartland Bridge und den offiziellen Vogel der Provinz, die Schwarzkopfmeise, dar.

Canada will be celebrating its 150th birthday on July 1st, 2017. Canadian designer Shania Sunga has created a mystery quilt to commemorate this event. There are 13 blocks in all depticting Canada’s ten provinces and three territories.  The blocks are constructed using a fusible, raw edge appliqué technique. I love the idea and I love the design, so I signed up for the program. So far I have just fused the pieces to the background fabric. I am thinking of doing it the McKenna Ryan way which means free-motion stitching around the pieces while quilting at the same time. And I think that is what the designer will recommend in the end, I have seen other Shania Sunga patterns, and she likes doing it this way. The first block features New Brunswick and depicts the Hartland Bridge and New Brunswick's provincial bird, the black-capped chickadee.
