Geyser Gazing

Zur Geyserbeobachtung gehört jede Menge Geduld, aber das Ergebnis lohnt die stundenlange Warterei. Die meisten Touristen, die nach Yellowstone kommen, sehen sich lediglich Old Faithful an und warten selbst bei dieser Eruption nicht das Ende ab. Sie wissen gar nicht, welche Wunder sie verpassen.

Geyser Gazing requires a lot of patience but the outcome sure is worth hours of waiting. Most tourists that come to Yellowstone just watch Old Faithful erupt and don't even stay until the end of that eruption. They have no idea of the wonders they miss.

We were up on Geyser Hill shortly after 5 a.m., a wonderful time when almost nobody is out there. After sunrise the geysers' steam fogged in the basin. It was a fascinating atmosphere although it was easier to hear the geysers erupt than see them. The fog lifted during the morning, and the sun came out.


Bereits kurz nach 5 Uhr morgens waren wir auf dem Geyser Hill, eine wunderbare Zeit, es ist kaum ein Mensch unterwegs. Nach Sonnenaufgang hüllte der Dampf der Geysire jedoch alles zunächst in dichten Nebel. Die Atmosphäre war faszinierend, auch wenn die Geysire besser zu hören als zu sehen waren. Im Laufe des Morgens klarte es jedoch auf, und die Sonne schien.


Leider habe ich Fan & Mortar verpasst, zwei Geysire, die immer gemeinsam ausbrechen und nur schlecht vorhersagbar sind. Momentan haben sie ein Intervall von etwa 4 1/2 Tagen, und ich habe auch mehrere Stunden dort gesessen, mich dann aber entschieden, auf Grand Geyser zu warten, dessen Ausbrüche auf etwas vier Stunden genau vorhersagbar sind. Und während der drei Stunden, in denen ich dort wartete, brachen Fan & Mortar aus. Allerdings hat mich Grand, den ich vorher noch nie hatte ausbrechen sehen, dafür entschädigt.


Unfortunately I missed the eruption of Fan & Mortar, two geysers that always erupt together and are hard to catch because of their erratic behavior. They erupt about every 4 1/2 days right now,and I spent a few hours out there watching them, but then I decided to go over to Grand Geyser which is predicted by the National Park Rangers and has a window of about four hours. And while I was sitting there for three hours Fan & Mortar erupted. Well, Grand put on a wonderful show when it finally erupted, so I guess it was okay, especially since I had never seen it before.


The last geyser we saw erupt today was Riverside in the evening sun with a beautiful rainbow. And after having walked out to Morning Glory Pool and back to Old Faithful three times (that is 1.4 miles one way) I was really tired and went to bed rather early.

Zum Abschluss gab es noch eine Eruption von Riverside Geyser in der Abendsonne mit einem wunderbaren Regenbogen. Und nachdem ich dreimal den Weg durch das Basin bis zum Morning Glory Pool und zurück zu Old Faithful zurückgelegt hatte, bei einer einfachen Wegstrecke von 2,25 km, fiel ich ziemlich früh müde ins Bett.
