Herbstblätter

Ich brauchte mal wieder Geburtstagskarten, und ich hatte noch zwei vom letzten Jahr, denen noch der letzte Schliff fehlte, die habe ich endlich vervollständigt. Der Herbst steht ja tatsächlich schon wieder vor der Tür, am Montag beginnt in Berlin die Schule wieder.

I needed a couple of greeting cards, and I found two from last year which I didn't finish then, so I finally got them done. Autumn is just around the corner, Monday is the first day of school here in Berlin.

Eine reiche Ernte

... an Tomaten haben wir in diesem Jahr. Beim Färbefest hat Kerstin uns mit jungen Tomatenpflanzen versorgt. Nach dem doch eher kalten und nassen Juni hatte ich ja schon Sorge, dass das nichts wird, aber im Juli und August war offenbar perfektes Tomatenwetter. Hm, sind die lecker! Ich freue mich schon auf den Salat heute abend.

Our tomatoes yield a large crop this year. When we met to dye fabrics in May, Kerstin gave us tiny tomato plants for our gardens. The weather in June was rather cold and wet, and I didn't really think we would have many tomatoes. But it seems that July and August were perfect tomato weather. These are sooooo yummy! I am very much looking forward to a nice tomato salad for dinner.

Kellerfalten der Burda-Bluse

Am Wochenende hatte ich mich soweit beruhigt, dass ich tatsächlich die Bluse mal zugeschnitten und mit dem Nähen begonnen habe. Der Stoff ist der in dem Beige-Ton, den ich schon mit dem Gedanken gekauft habe, ihn mit dem Pünktchenstoff zu kombinieren.

This weekend I had finally overcome my frustrations with the Burda WOF pattern. I cut the pieces for the blouse and started sewing. The fabric is the tan one I bought at the fabric market with the intention of somehow combining it with the dotted fabric.

I am not sure about the box pleats yet. Burda's instructions called for a few hand stitches at the beginning and the end, leaving the part in between open. Maybe this looks nice as long as I don't move but otherwise I don't like the look at all. I might just stitch the whole pleat closed and check if I like the result better.


Ob ich allerdings die Kellerfalten so lasse, wie sie nach der Burda-Anleitung geworden sind, weiß ich noch nicht. Sie sind nur oben und unten durch je einen handgenähten Riegel fixiert. Im "Ruhezustand" sieht das ja vielleicht ganz nett aus, aber bei der kleinsten Bewegung springt die Mitte auf, und ich finde nicht, dass das schön aussieht. Vielleicht nähe ich das ganze Stück mal mit der Maschine zu und gucke, ob mir das besser gefällt.

Hexagons

Diese Woche habe ich mich tatsächlich aufgerafft und meine Hexagon-Kiste hervorgeholt. Seit Juni hatte ich daran nichts mehr gemacht, aber nach dem Burda-Frust musste ich einfach mal etwas anderes machen.

This week I finally got around to taking out my hexagons again. I haven't worked on them since June but after last weekend's frustration with the Burda WOF pattern I wanted to do something different this week.

This is how it looks so far. I realize there is a lot of black in there but it will not stay this way. The finished design contains about 1/3 black and 2/3 colored hexagons.

Hier ist also der erste Zwischenstand. Er ist noch etwas schwarzlastig, aber das gibt sich, keine Sorge. Das fertige Design besteht zu etwa einem Drittel aus schwarzen und zu zwei Dritteln aus bunten Hexagons.

Frust mit Burda

Die Burda-Bluse hat mich am Sonntag wirklich frustriert. Ich habe ja schon eine Menge Burda-Schnitte genäht und weiß mittlerweile, mit welcher Größe ich anfange und wo ich ändern muss. Aber diesmal hat das überhaupt nicht geklappt. Das Probemodell war im Brustbereich viel zu weit, in der Taille einigermaßen passend und in der Hüfte viel zu eng. Außerdem war die Schulter zu breit. Ich habe gestern geändert, geändert und nochmal geändert. Das Rückenteil hat ganz gut gepasst, aber das Vorderteil war eine Katastrophe.

I am really frustrated with the Burda blouse pattern. I have sewn a lot of Burda patterns, and I think I now which size to start with and where I have to alter. But yesterday, my usual method didn't work at all. The muslin was much too wide in the bust area, about okay in the waist area and way too tight around the hips. And the shoulder was too wide, too. I altered and altered and altered the whole day. The back was quite okay, but the front was just a disaster.

I was reminded of the problems I ran into with the Ottobre dress, I had to do the same alterations there. I wonder if maybe Burda WOF changed something? They changed their complete editorial staff this year, and maybe they work with different slopers or methods of pattern constructions? It is really strange that I never encountered these problems with Burda before. I took my measurements again, but these didn't change.

Ich fühlte mich sehr an die Probleme mit dem Ottobre-Kleid erinnert, da musste ich genau die gleichen Änderungen an den gleichen Stellen durchführen. Jetzt habe ich mich gefragt, ob das vielleicht an Burda liegt? Eventuell arbeitet die neue Redaktion mit anderen Grundschnitten/anderen Konstruktionsmethoden? Ist schon merkwürdig, dass ich mit Burda bisher nie diese Probleme hatte. Jedenfalls habe ich mich gleich nochmal ausgemessen, aber die Maße haben sich nicht verändert, daran kann es also nicht liegen.

Am besten, ich höre jetzt auf zu jammern und sehe zu, dass endlich mein Blusengrundschnitt fertig wird. Wenn ich die Arbeit, die ich gestern in die Änderung des Burda-Schnittes investiert habe, in die beiden letzten Falten am Rücken gesteckt hätte, wäre das Teil vermutlich fertig. Aber jetzt gehe ich erstmal und versuche, einen Büffel für den Yellowstone-Quilt zu zeichnen. Auf die Bluse habe ich gerade gar keine Lust mehr.

I guess I will have to stop whining now and start some serious work on my blouse sloper. If I had put yesterday's amount of work on the pattern alterations into the sloper it would probably be finished by now. But now I will go and try to draw a buffalo block for my Yellowstone Quilt. I am really fed up with the blouse right now.

Bluse 130 aus Burda 08/2009 (jedenfalls fast)

Nach einer geeigneten Bluse musste ich gar nicht lange suchen. In der aktuellen Burda gefällt mir Modell 130. Leider ist das Bild auf der Burda Website unmöglich, man kann nichts erkennen, und eine technische Zeichnung gibt es auch nicht. Die Bluse hat vorne Teilungsnähte und in der Taille vorne und hinten Kellerfalten. Die langen Ärmel wollte ich nicht, also kombiniere ich lieber die Ärmel von Modell 129 dazu (das sowieso auf dem gleichen Schnitt beruht).

I found a blouse pattern (No. 130) that I like in the current issue of Burda WOF. Unfortunately the picture on the Burda website it really terrible, the details cannot be seen, and they don't provide a technical drawing. The blouse has shoulder princess seams in the front and box pleats in the waist area both in the front and the back. I did not want long sleeves so I decided to use the sleeves of bluse No. 129 (which is the same pattern anyway).

The blouse has a yoke in the back which made me wonder how to make my very round back alteration. "Fit for Real People" suggest adding length to the center back tapering to nothing towards the seamline.

Hinten hat die Bluse eine Passe. Jetzt stand ich vor dem Problem, wie ich diese am besten an meinen runden Rücken anpasse. "Fit for Real People" schlägt vor, an Passe und Rückenteil keilförmig etwas zuzugeben.

Das habe ich aber schon einmal probiert und war mit dem Ergebnis gar nicht zufrieden. Ich brauche nicht nur mehr Länge im oberen Rücken, sondern auch mehr Platz für meine hervorstehenden Schulterblätter. Also habe ich erstmal so getan, als ob gar keine Passe da wäre und eine ganz normale Änderung für den runden Rücken gemacht.
Well, I tried that before but was not really happy with the result. I don't just need more length in the upper back area but also more room for my protruding shoulder blades. So I pretended the pattern didn't have a yoke at all and did my normal alteration for a very round back.

This is also what my sloper would look like if I ever got that finished. Then I followed the instructions in my book on blouses and dresses how to construct a yoke. I made a perpendicular cut from the center back to the point of the dart, then the dart is closed by moving the pattern piece upwards. The yoke piece is cut all the way to the armhole, the seam line of the back pattern piece is adjusted a little. Thas was actually very easy to do although my pattern pieces looked pretty wild after that.

So in etwa würde ja auch mein Grundschnitt aussehen, wenn ich den endlich mal fertig bekäme. Dann bin ich der Anleitung im Blusen-und-Kleider-Buch zur Erstellung einer Passe gefolgt. Von der rückwärtigen Mitte wird rechtwinklig bis zum Abnäher eingeschnitten, dann wird dieser zugedreht. Die Passe wird dann bis zum Armloch abgetrennt, die Nahtlinie des Rückenteils etwas ausgeglichen. Das war eigentlich ganz einfach, auch wenn meine Schnitteile hinterher ziemlich wild aussahen.

Das Papiermodell sieht aber ganz vielversprechend aus. Allerdings liegt am Vorderteil die Kellerfalte direkt über der Teilungsnaht, was mit Papier und Stecknadeln schlecht zu realisieren war. Ein Probemodell muss also auch diesmal wieder her. Außerdem scheint mir der Brustbereich etwas zu weit zu sein.

The paper model looks promising. The box pleat in the front is directly on the princess seam, this was very difficult to do with paper and pins, so I guess I will have to make a muslin anyway. And I am a little concerned about the bust area, the pattern seems to be rather wide there.

(Anmerkung: Meine wilden Zeichnungen auf den Schnitt-Teilen sind nur Andeutungen, wie es in etwa geht. Ich habe einfach auf dem Grundschnitt rumgemalt und die Änderungen nicht etwa fotografiert, als ich sie gemacht habe. )

Nach dem Tierarztbesuch...

... erholt man sich am besten auf einem Quilt, der schon seit Wochen auf dem Klavier liegt, weil nie jemand Zeit und Lust hat, endlich die Bohrmaschine aus dem Keller zu holen, um die Golden Gate Bridge an der Wand zu befestigen.

After a very exhausting trip to the vet, is there a better place to rest than this? The Golden Gate Bridge Quilt has been lying on the piano for weeks because nobody found the time and energy yet to get the drill out of the basement to finally put it up on the wall.

Brückenfahrt durch Berlin

Heute haben wir mit dem Schiff eine Rundfahrt durch Berlin gemacht. Berlin soll ja mehr Brücken haben als Venedig, und auf unserer Tour über Landwehrkanal und Spree sind wir unter 63 davon durchgefahren. Vor allem auf dem Kanal sind die Brücken so niedrig, dass auf dem Oberdeck alle Passagiere sitzen müssen, wenn sie unterquert werden.

Today we went on a sightseeing tour through Berlin by ship. Berlin is supposed to have more bridges than Venice, and our tour on the Landwehrkanal and the river Spree passed under 63 of them. The bridges, especially those crossing the canal, are very low, passengers are required to sit on the upper deck when the ship goes underneath one of them.

It was rather cloudy today, and the wind was quite brisk from time to time, but I thought that was much better than sitting in the blazing sun all day. And the ship wasn't that crowded, either...

Es war ziemlich wolkig, und der Wind wehte teilweise recht frisch, aber ich fand das Wetter angenehmer, als wenn uns die ganze Zeit die Sonne auf den Kopf gebrannt hätte. Und es war auch nicht so voll auf dem Schiff...

Die Tour hat gut drei Stunden gedauert und war sehr informativ. Es gab viel zu sehen, und zur Freude unseres Sohnes durchfuhren wir auch drei Schleusen.

The tour was about three hours long and very interesting. We passed a lot of Berlin's sights and - our son was delighted - also three locks.

Futterschnitt für einen Rock

Burda spart sich ja häufig das Futter bei Röcken, und wenn eines vorgesehen ist, wird es in der Regel nach dem gleichen Schnitt gearbeitet wie der Oberstoff, nur ein bißchen kürzer. Ich hatte zwar mal irgendwo gelesen, dass das Futter für einen Rock ein bißchen größer sein sollte als der Oberstoff, aber da keine Erklärung dabei war, warum und wieviel, habe ich diese Aussage bisher verdrängt.

Burda WOF is not very much into lining skirts at all, and if they suggest it should be done they don't offer an extra pattern but expect you to just cut the lining a little shorter than your fabric. I had read somewhere that the lining skirt should actually be a little wider than the skirt itself but since I couldn't find an explanation on why and how much I forgot about that.

My pattern construction book contains a whole chapter about skirt lining patterns. And they actually do add width and length to it, at least to the back. The front is just cut a little shorter. A small amount of width (about 1/5") is added to the center back, and the waist is raised about 3/8" in the center back. That is a simple alteration, easy to remember and to add to Burda patterns. The book doesn't give a detailed explanation on why this should be done either, it just mentions avoiding any strain on the lining.

In dem Buch nach Müller & Sohn ist aber ein Extra-Kapitel über den Futterschnitt drin. Und dort wird der Futterschnitt tatsächlich etwas größer konstruiert, zumindest an der rückwärtigen Rockbahn. Das Vorderteil wird wie bei Burda nur etwas kürzer zugeschnitten. Am Rückenteil wird jedoch in der hinteren Mitte ein halber Zentimeter Weite zugegeben und die Taille um 1 cm nach oben versetzt. Das ist eine einfache Änderung, leicht zu merken, und auch bei Burda-Schnitten in Zukunft gut umzusetzen. Als Erklärung wird übrigens nur angegeben, dass man dies tun solle, "um Spannung zu vermeiden".

Fertig!

Der Rock ist fertig, und es war ein ziemlicher Kampf mit dem Stoff! Ich habe den mit den Punkten vom Stoffmarkt genommen, und es hat sich herausgestellt, dass die Punkte ohne Rücksicht auf den Fadenlauf aufgedruckt wurden. Außerdem war der ganze Stoff sehr verzogen. Ich habe ewig gebraucht, bis ich zugeschnitten hatte, und das, wo ich Zuschneiden doch so ungern mache.

The skirt is finished but the fabric put up a big fight. I chose the one with the dots that I bought at the fabric market, and the dots were obviously printed without considering the grain line. The whole fabric was rather distorted, and it took me forever to cut the pieces. And I hate cutting anyway.

But I succeeded after all, and the skirt fits nicely. Now I have to make a blouse to wear with it. The pattern construction process was a lot of fun. I should really get on with my blouse pattern but I admit I don't feel like doing that right now. My sewing room is upstairs under the roof, and it is so hot that I can't think clearly up there right now.

Aber letztendlich habe ich doch gewonnen, und der Rock passt. Jetzt fehlt nur noch eine passende Bluse dazu. Die Konstruktion hat viel Spaß gemacht, ich sollte wirklich zusehen, dass ich mit dem Blusengrundschnitt weiterkomme. Aber im Moment habe ich einfach keine Lust dazu, besonders da mein Nähzimmer unter dem Dach ist und ich bei diesen Temperaturen da gar nicht klar denken kann.

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

Im Yellowstone National Park gibt es natürlich noch viel mehr zu sehen als Geysire. Für meinen zweiten Block habe ich den Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone ausgewählt. Hier hat der Yellowstone River eine tiefe Schlucht in die Felsen gegraben. Auch mehrere Wasserfälle gibt es hier. Auf meinem Bild sind die Lower Falls zu sehen.

There is much more to see in Yellowstone National Park than just geysers. My second block shows the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, where the river washed out a deep gorge. There are also several waterfalls like the Lower Falls that can be seen in my picture.

Volantkonstruktion

Nach dem Erfolgserlebnis mit dem Rockgrundschnitt habe ich gleich mal angefangen, einen einfachen Schnitt zu konstruieren. Als Vorlage ausgesucht habe ich mir Rock 117 aus der Burda 03/2007. Den wollte ich im letzten Jahr schon mal nähen, dann hat der Stoff nicht gereicht. Der Schnitt sah einfach aus, und ich hatte ihn ja bereits fertig kopiert, so dass ich spicken konnte.

After the success with my skirt pattern I started working on a simple skirt. I decided to use skirt 117 from the March 2007 issue of Burda WOF as an inspiration. I wanted to sew that skirt last year but then I didn't have enough fabric. The pattern looked simple enough, and I had already copied the Burda pieces so I had something I could look at if I needed help.

The skirt itself pretty much stayed the same, I just cut off about 7" at the hem for the flounces. The wrapover piece was also easy to draw. It was more difficult to draw the flounces. My book explains well how to calculate the flounces for the straight hemline. I was successful there on my first try, and I also measured Burda's pattern piece and could follow their construction. But the flounce for the wrapover piece was another story altogether, there was no explanation in the book how to work with the curved hemline and the different angles.

Am Rock selbst war nichts zu ändern, lediglich unten musste ein Stück für den Volant abgetrennt werden. Die Überrockbahn war auch leicht zu zeichnen. Die Konstruktion der Volants war da schon problematischer. In dem Müller & Sohn-Buch ist zwar gut nachvollziehbar erklärt, wie der Volant für den Saum (bei gerader Rockkante) gezeichnet wird. Das hat auf Anhieb geklappt, und auch das Nachmessen des Burda-Teils hat mich da bestätigt. Aber der Volant für die Überrockbahn mit der schrägen Kante hat mir doch einiges Kopfzerbrechen bereitet, dazu steht im Buch gar nichts.

Ich habe dann das Schnitt-Teil von Burda ausgemessen und versucht, daraus Rückschlüsse zu ziehen und diese dann auf meine Maße zu übertragen. Daraus ist dann ein recht merkwürdiges Teil entstanden. Eigentlich hatte ich ja gedacht, ich könnte auf ein Probemodell verzichten, da sich der Rock an sich ja nicht verändert hat, aber bei dem Volant war ich mir dann doch zu unsicher.

I then measured Burda's pattern piece and tried to draw my own conclusions from that and to transfer these to my own measurements. I came up with a rather strange looking piece. Originally I had thought I could omit the muslin since I hadn't made any changes to the skirt itself, but the flounce pattern looked so strange I decided I had to make one anyway.

To save time (and fabric) I just cut off my sloper muslin and added the wrapover and flounce pieces. And believe it or not, it worked great! I love the muslin, the flounces look like they are supposed to. I have no idea if I was just lucky or if I was on the right track with my ideas. But I sure had a lot of fun with the drawing process, it was a welcome relief from doing the same boring alterations over and over again.
Um Arbeit (und Stoff) zu sparen, habe ich dann das Probemodell vom Grundschnitt unten abgeschnitten und die Überrockbahn und Volants angefügt. Und siehe da, es hat super geklappt. Das Probemodell gefällt mir gut, die Volants sehen aus wie geplant. Ob das jetzt Zufall war oder ob meine Ideen richtig waren - keine Ahnung. Auf jeden Fall hat die Bastelei großen Spaß gemacht, und es war schön, dass es mal was Anderes war und nicht immer die gleichen langweiligen Änderungen.

Tilda Schmuckbüste

Diese Woche beim Einkaufen lief plötzlich eine Frau an mir vorbei und stürzte sich mit einem spitzen Aufschrei des Entzückens auf das Tchibo-Regal. Das Objekt ihrer Begierde war der Schmuckständer, der diese Woche im Angebot ist, eine Büste ohne Kopf, stattdessen mit einer Reihe Ästen, die aus dem Hals sprießen, an welche man Ketten und sonstigen Schmuck hängen kann.

This week at the grocery store a woman rushed past me with a delighted scream. Of course I had to follow her and find out what she was so excited about. They offered a small jewelry rack that looked like a woman's torso with branches coming out of her headless neck where you could hang your rings and necklaces.

That reminded me of the one and only Tilda thing I ever made. (The link is only in German, but there are enough pictures to give you an idea if you have never heard of Tilda designs.) I have to admit that I am not a Tilda fan and usually do not care about these designs, I am not really into frills and similar stuff. (And the less you have standing around, the less you have to keep clean :-)) But when my Zick-Zack-Zicken met in Wahlsdorf in May I saw the miniature dress form pattern in the new Tilda book that was intended to store necklaces, and I thought I might like to have that in my bedroom.
Das hat mich an das erste und einzige Tilda-Teil erinnert, das ich je genäht habe. Ich gebe ganz ehrlich zu, ich bin kein Tilda-Fan und kann mit dem Schnick-Schnack in der Regel nichts anfangen, bin ich doch sonst eher minimalistisch veranlagt. (Und je weniger Kram rumsteht, umso weniger muss man putzen :-)) Beim Mai-Treffen der Zick-Zack-Zicken in Wahlsdorf entdeckte ich dann die Schmuckbüste im neuen Tilda-Buch und dachte gleich, die könnte in mein Schlafzimmer passen.

In meinem Vorrat fand sich sogar ein passendes Stöffchen, und gleich am nächsten Wochenende habe ich die Büste genäht. Was mir nicht wirklich gefällt, sind die Engelsflügel, die hätte ich gern weggelassen, aber dann hätte die Kette nicht gehalten. Ines hat dieses Problem übrigens wunderbar mit einer großen Rüsche gelöst, aber das habe ich leider erst gesehen, als ich schon fertig war, sonst hätte ich diese Idee sicher aufgegriffen.

I even found a suitable fabric in my stash and made it the next weekend. I don't really like the angel wings but I had no idea how to omit them because they keep the necklace up. Ines found a clever solution for this problem, she just added a ruffle big enough to support the necklace. Unfortunately I didn't see hers until mine was done, otherwise I would shamelessly have copied her idea.
