The Mile High City

Gestern sind wir also endlich in die USA geflogen, und nach einer Übernachtung in Newark ging es heute weiter nach Colorado. Bei der Landung in Denver hat uns der Pilot den Gefallen getan, eine große Schleife zu fliegen und von Süden zu landen, so dass wir einen wunderbaren Blick auf die Skyline von Denver vor den noch schneebedeckten Rockies hatten.

Yesterday we finally flew to the US. After spending the night in Newark we went on to Colorado today. The pilot did us a favor and landed from the south which gave us a great view of the Denver skyline and the still snow-topped Rockies in the background.

We spent the afternoon in downtown Denver. Since Denver is Colorado's capital, this is where you find the state capitol. You can still climb the dome but not as high as we could ten years ago. But the view is still worth the climb.

Den Nachmittag haben wir dann in Downtown verbracht. Denver ist die Hauptstadt von Colorado, hier befindet sich also das State Capitol. Leider kann man die Kuppel nicht mehr so hoch besteigen wie vor zehn Jahren, aber trotzdem lohnt sich der Aufstieg, der Ausblick ist einfach schön.

Und im Foyer hing ein großer Quilt mit den Staatssymbolen von Colorado.

In the entrance hall I found a big quilt with Colorado's state symbols.

At the steps that lead up to the Capitol is the Mile High Marker. This is were the city is exactly one mile (5,280 ft) above sea level. This marker used to be five steps higher but a recent survey using GPS determined that this marker was about 3 ft too high so they moved it in 2003.

An den Stufen zum Capitol hinauf befindet sich der Mile High Marker. Hier ist die Stadt genau eine Meile (1.609 m) über dem Meeresspiegel. Der Marker lag früher fünf Stufen höher, aber neuere Messungen mittels GPS haben ergeben, dass das etwa 90 cm zu hoch war, so dass der Marker 2003 verlegt wurde.

Beim Spazieren durch die Stadt fanden wir dann noch dieses Café.
