On our first morning in Colorado we always drive up Lookout Mountain in Golden to watch the sun rise over Denver and the great plains. But our visits were always in September or October, and in July the sun rises much earlier so we did not get there on time.
Afterwards we drove to Colorado Springs to visit the Garden of the Gods with its rock formations of red sandstone. I especially like the "Siamese Twins" and the view of Pikes Peak (14,100 ft high mountain) through the "window" formed by the twins' arms. But the balanced rock is also very nice, and every time I see it I wonder if it will still be there the next time.

We had a motel reservation in Pueblo and had to decide which way to drive to get there. We could either use paved roads and drive a big detour or take the direct unpaved road through Phantom Canyon. Of course we chose the canyon road which was recommended to us in Cripple Creek with the words that everybody needed a little adventure in their life. And the scenery was definitely worth it.
