Mesa Verde

Heute morgen sind wir als erstes zum Four Corners Monument gefahren. Dies ist die einzige Stelle, an der vier US-Staaten aufeinandertreffen. Das Monument liegt mitten im Nichts und ist auch nicht sehr spektakulär, aber wenn man schon mal in der Gegend ist, muss man es wohl gesehen haben.

We drove to Four Corners Monument first thing this morning. This is the only place in the US where four states intersect at one point. It is rather remote and not exactly spectacular but since we were in the area we decided to stop there.

Afterwards we drove to Mesa Verde National Park where the Anasazi lived from about 550 to 1300. Probably because of a long draught they then left the region. During the last 100 years of their stay they built the most amazing cliff dwellings. We took a tour of Cliff Palace, probably the biggest dwelling in the park.



Danach ging es zum Mesa Verde National Park. Hier lebten die Anasazi von ca. 550 bis 1300, bevor sie dann durch eine langanhaltende Dürre aus der Gegend vertrieben wurden. In den letzten 100 Jahren ihres Lebens dort bauten sie eine ganze Reihe beeindruckender Wohnanlagen. Wir besichtigten den Cliff Palace, wohl die größte dieser Anlagen im Park.

Nachmittags ging es zurück nach Durango und weiter nach Norden bis nach Silverton. Hier endet die Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, eine dampfbetriebene Schmalspurbahn, die jeder Eisenbahnfan gesehen haben muss.



In the afternoon we drove back to Durango and then up north to Silverton where we saw a train of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. My husband and son are both big fans of steam engines so we absolutely had to stop there.
