Ein Drittel ist geschafft

Von dem Blätterquilt ist jetzt etwa ein Drittel gequiltet. Ich weiß lediglich noch nicht, was ich mit dem schwarzen Rand mache, aber das entscheide ich erst ganz zum Schluss, wenn der Rest komplett gequiltet ist.

About one third of the leaf quilt is quilted by now. I just haven't decided yet what to do with the black outside border, I will leave that until everything else is quilted.

The background patches are just quilted in lines, inspired by the pattern "Etch 'n' Sketch", but not as closely spaced. I decided on "Pebbling" for the water, and the pebbles turned out pretty small. The squares in the quilt are about 2" finished size, so you can imagine how long it takes to fill the few blue patches with those tiny pebbles.

Den Hintergrund ist nur in Linien gequiltet, angelehnt an das Muster "Etch 'n' Sketch", aber nicht so eng. Dafür habe ich für das Wasser auf "Pebbling" zurückgegriffen, und die Pebbles sind ziemlich klein geraten. Ein Quadrat im Quilt hat eine Seitenlänge von nur 5 cm, man kann also ahnen, dass es recht lange dauert, die wenigen blauen Flächen mit Pebbles zu füllen.

Das blaue Garn hat mich übrigens fast zur Verzweiflung getrieben. Es ist ein Multicolorgarn von Gütermann Sulky, Rayon wie das Madeira-Stickgarn, das ich sonst gern benutze, und ich dachte, nachdem meine Maschine das, das Anke mir letztes Jahr geschenkt hat, so problemlos verarbeitet hat, würde es auch diesmal keine Probleme geben. Weit gefehlt, auf dem ersten kleinen Dreieck ist mir der Faden bestimmt fünfzehn Mal gerissen. Ich habe alle verfügbaren Nadeln ausprobiert, aber nichts ging. Als letzten Versuch habe ich eine Packung 80er Topstitchnadeln gekauft (und als Reserve noch eine Rolle blaues Multicolorgarn von Madeira), und siehe da, plötzlich ging es einigermaßen. Zum Glück war das Ergebnis die ganze Mühe wert.

The blue thread was another exasperating experience for me. It is a variegated thread manufactured by Gütermann Sulky, rayon as the Madeira product I usually machine quilt with. I thought that after my machine liked the variegated Gütermann thread that Anke gave me last year there wouldn't be any trouble with the blue one. Big surprise, the thread broke at least fifteen times while quilting just the first blue triangle. I tried all different needles I had in my stash, but nothing worked until I went and bought a pack of topstitch needles in a proper size (and a spool of variegated blue Madeira thread as a backup). Well, at least the look of the finished pebbles was worth the hassle.

Es wäre ja auch Verschwendung

... wenn man als Katze so einen schönen neuen Quilt nicht sofort "be-sitzen" würde :-)

It would be a waste of a perfectly good quilt if you didn't take your job as a quilt inspector seriously and sat on it right away :-)

Neue Stoffe

Diese Woche traf ein Päckchen mit neuen Stoffen bei mir ein.

This week the fabrics I ordered arrived.

I bought a few fabrics for Christmas cards. I have a design ready, now I have all the materials I need, I just have to actually make them. More than two months until Christmas - I think I am pretty organized this year :-)

Zum einen hatte ich Weihnachtsstoffe bestellt. Ich weiß schon, was ich für Karten mache, jetzt habe ich alles Material und muss sie "nur" noch nähen :-) Dieses Jahr bin ich ja wirklich organisiert.

Dann habe ich Batiks bestellt. Bei den Zick-Zack-Zicken hatten wir in diesem Jahr Sternenblöcke aus Batikstoffen getauscht. Mir fällt auf, dass ich die noch gar nicht hier gezeigt habe, sollte ich unbedingt nachholen. Jedenfalls müssen die ja auch mal zu einem Top zusammengesetzt werden, also habe ich dafür (bisher allerdings noch ohne konkreten Plan) Stoffe bestellt.

I also ordered some batiks. Our Zick-Zack-Zicken project this year was a star block swap made from batiks. I just realized that I haven't posted pictures of the blocks yet, I will do that soon. Anyway, these blocks have to be put together into a top. I don't have a plan yet but thought I would order a few fabrics for that.

And finally the much needed black fabrics for the hexagons arrived. Anke gave me a whole bag of blacks on Friday, so I have a nice selection now. I spent last night cutting hexagons for hours, now I have a huge amount to baste today.

Und zuletzt brauchte ich noch neue schwarze Stoffe für die Hexagons. Zusätzlich zu denen, die ich bestellt hatte, hat Anke mir am Freitag noch eine ganze Tüte mitgebracht, so dass ich jetzt ein schönes Sortiment habe. Gestern abend habe ich gleich mal stundenlang geschnippelt, jetzt muss der Riesenstapel noch geheftet werden.

KunstSTOFF

Dies ist der Name einer Ausstellung, die gestern abend in der Kommunalen Galerie in Berlin-Wilmersdorf eröffnet wurde. Ausgestellt werden Quilts, die Mitglieder des Patchworktreff Berlin-Brandenburg sowie einer englischen und einer französischen Gruppe gefertigt haben. Es wurden vier Stoffe in den Gruppen ausgegeben, die in den Quilts verarbeitet werden mussten. Leider habe ich vergessen, diese vorgegebenen Stoffe zu fotografieren.

"KunstSTOFF" is the name of a quilt exhibition that was opened last night here in Berlin. The name is a pun that doesn't really translate into English. "Kunst" means "art" and "Stoff" is "fabric", but "Kunststoff" is also the German word for synthetic (plastic) materials. The exhibition presents quilts that were made by members of three groups, one from England, one from France and from the hosting group from Berlin/Brandenburg. It was a challenge that required the use of four fabrics that were given to the participants. Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of these fabrics.

A large variety of quilts are on exhibition at the gallery. I will show just a selection here. If you happen to come to Berlin during the time of the exhibition don't miss the chance to see these beautiful quilts.

Eine unglaubliche Vielfalt an Quilts wurde präsentiert, von denen ich hier eine Auswahl zeigen will. Wer die Chance hat, die Ausstellung in Berlin zu besuchen, sollte sich dies nicht entgehen lassen.

Quilting in Progress

Anke hat gefragt, ob der Quilt bis zum Wochenende in Wahlsdorf fertig wird. Nach Wahlsdorf fahren wir am 7. November, und nach dem, was ich gestern geschafft habe, wird es bis dahin nichts mit dem Quilt. Es sind einfach unheimlich viele Blätter, die alle einzeln mit Blattadern versehen werden wollen, und das erfordert deutlich mehr Konzentration und geht viel langsamer, als mal so eben fröhlich darüber zu stippeln. Und dann will ich ja auch noch den Hintergrund und das Wasser quilten, da weiß ich noch nicht einmal, welches Muster ich da nehme.

Anke wanted to know if I would be able to finish the quilt until our weekend retreat in Wahlsdorf. We will go there on Nov. 7th, und after quilting quite a lot yesterday I don't think so. There are just so many leaves in the quilt which all have to be quilted individually, and that requires a lot of concentration and much more time than just stippling all over it. And I want to quilt the background and water and haven't even decided on a design yet.

I don't have time anymore to sew during the week (well, hexagons at night by hand, but that's it). My son who is in fifth grade started a new school this year where he learns Latin. The language itself is not a problem for him but he was so completely bored in elementary school that he never learned how to learn. I have to constantly pay attention that he gets some studying done. There is no free time left over for quilting. But the strange thing is that I have fun doing Latin with him. I studied Latin for seven years in school, and it is amazing how much I still remember :-)

In der Woche komme ich gar nicht zum Nähen (außer abends Hexagons mit der Hand). Mein Sohn geht seit diesem Schuljahr in die fünfte Klasse eines Gymnasiums und hat angefangen, Latein zu lernen. Er hat zwar keine Probleme, die Grammatik zu verstehen und die Vokabeln zu behalten, aber da er in der Grundschule alles aus dem Ärmel geschüttelt hat, hat er nie gelernt zu lernen, so dass man täglich aufpassen muss, dass er tatsächlich auch die Vokabeln lernt usw. Da bleibt dann keine Zeit mehr zum Quilten. Aber seltsamerweise macht mir Latein plötzlich Spaß. Ich hatte es selbst sieben Jahre lang in der Schule und bin erstaunt, wieviel ich noch kann :-)

Jedenfalls könnte ich den Quilt bis Wahlsdorf nur fertig bekommen, wenn ich jedes Wochenende wie verrückt quilte, und das will ich mir nicht antun. Ich brauche auch neue Geburtstagskarten, die Astern sind schon alle weg, und langsam bekomme ich auch Lust, wieder Kleidung zu nähen. Nächste Woche will ich mal zu Hüco fahren, und wenn ich da einen schönen Stoff finde, kann es sein, das der Blätterquilt erstmal in den Hintergrund gerät.

Anyway, the only chance to finish the quilt until Wahlsdorf is to quilt like a madwoman every weekend, and I don't intend to do that. I need new greeting cards, the Asters are all sent, und I feel like sewing clothes again. Next week I will try to go to Hüco, and if I find a nice fabric there, then I would put the leaf quilt on the back burner without feeling guilty.

Nochmal Bobbin Washers

Sabine bat um Erklärung, wo genau die Bobbin Washers hinkommen. Ich habe schnell ein paar Fotos gemacht, sie sind nicht von toller Qualität, aber ich denke, sie erfüllen ihren Zweck.
Sabine asked for an explanation where exactly the Bobbin Washers are supposed to go. I took a few pictures right away, please excuse the poor quality but I think they will do the job.
The bobbin case is taken out of the machine, the teflon washer is put in first, then the bobbin on top of the washer. Then the bobbin case is put back into the machine.

Die Spulenkapsel wird aus der Maschine genommen, der Teflon-Ring wird zuerst eingelegt, dann die Unterfadenspule auf den Ring. Dann wird die Kapsel ganz normal wieder in die Maschine eingesetzt.

Bobbin Washers

Am letzten Wochenende wollte ich eigentlich loslegen und den Blätterquilt quilten. Ich hatte mir dafür extra ein schönes Farbverlaufsgarn gekauft, und damit fingen die Probleme an. Zuerst hat es Stunden gedauert, bis ich die Fadenspannung halbwegs akzeptabel hinbekommen habe. Auf einem Probestückchen ging es dann einigermaßen, auf dem großen Quilt gar nicht mehr, ständig bildeten sich überall Schlaufen, und der Faden riss. Das Garn ist ziemlich dick, aber ich hatte eine neue 100er Topstitch-Nadel genommen, der Faden war korrekt eingelegt, und die Maschine war sauber und geölt, trotzdem klappte nichts.

I had planned to quilt the autumn leaves quilt last weekend. The thread I wanted to use was a nice variegated thread in light, medium and dark brown colors. Unfortunately it was very difficult to use. It took me forever to work out the thread tension. When I was finally satisfied with the result on a trial piece and actually started on the quilt it was quite a desaster. There were loops on the back side, and the thread broke all the time. I was using a new needle that had the right size, the machine was threaded correctly and cleaned and oiled, but nothing worked.

I had wondered about these gizmos called Bobbin Washers for a few weeks. I read about them in Leah Day's blog. These teflon washers are put into the bobbin case to prevent unwanted motion of the bobbin when changing directions while free motion quilting. I had been thinking about them for days, wondering whether they were completely uncessary or a genius invention. Last Sunday I discovered that Susanne Froeschle here in Germany has them in her store. I emailed her right away, and of course she had tried them and also recommended them.

Bei Leah Day hatte ich vor ein paar Wochen von Bobbin Washers gelesen. Das sind kleine Teflon-Scheiben, die in die Unterfaden-Kapsel eingelegt werden und verhindern sollen, dass sich die Unterfadenspule noch weiterdreht, wenn zum Beispiel beim Freihandquilten die Richtung gewechselt wird. Seitdem habe ich überlegt, ob ich die Dinger brauche, war mir aber nicht sicher, ob sie genial oder schwachsinnig sind. Am Sonntag habe ich dann entdeckt, dass Susanne Froeschle sie vorrätig hat. Also habe ich sie gleich angemailt, und natürlich hatte sie sie ausprobiert und konnte sie für Maschinen, die keine Feder haben, um ein Weiterlaufen des Unterfadens zu verhindern, sehr empfehlen.

Ich fand den Preis für so ein paar kleine Teflon-Scheiben, die wie etwas größere Lochverstärker aussehen, zwar etwas heftig, aber ich habe sie mir dann doch gegönnt. Und was soll ich sagen - sie sind genial. Sie halten das, was Leah in ihrem Video (nur auf Englisch) verspricht, es bilden sich keine Schlaufen, und der Faden reißt nicht mehr. Ich hoffe ja, dass das zukünftig diese unerklärlichen Probleme beseitigt, wenn meine Pfaff bestimmte Garne einfach nicht "mag".

I thought they were pretty expensive for just a few teflon thingies but ordered them anyway. Well, what shall I say - they are a genius invention. They do exactly what Leah said in her video they would do: no more loops, a lot less thread breaking. Maybe this will be the solution for all those times when my Pfaff machine just doesn't "like" a certain thread.

Anyway, I did decide to use another thread for quilting the autumn leaves in the end. I want to quilt veins onto the leaves which means a lot of sewing back and forth along the same lines, so the thread will just look dark brown in the end anyway. That would be a waste of the nice variegated thread so I will unpick the stitches I already quilted tonight and start over with plain brown thread tomorrow.

Allerdings habe ich mich letztendlich entschlossen, doch nicht das Multicolor-Garn zu verwenden. Ich will auf die Blätter Blattadern quilten, und dabei nähe ich immer hin und her auf den gleichen Linien, so dass der Faden letztendlich nur dunkelbraun aussieht und der Farbverlauf verloren geht. Also habe ich beschlossen, dass das Verschwendung des schönen Farbverlaufgarns ist. Das Stückchen, das ich schon gequiltet habe, werde ich gleich "entnähen", dann kann es morgen mit Uni-Garn weitergehen.

Third Weekend in October

Das dritte Oktoberwochenende haben wir zwar noch nicht erreicht, aber ich habe trotzdem das Quilttop mit diesem Titel herausgekramt, um es endlich einmal zu quilten. Das Design ist von Ruth Powers und die erste Quiltanleitung, die ich jemals gekauft habe. Sie hat dann jahrelang im Schrank gelegen, bis ich sie vor zwei Jahren wiedergefunden habe.

Last weekend was not yet the third in October but nonetheless I took out the quilt top I made that goes by that name to prepare it for quilting. It is a design by Ruth Powers and was the first quilt pattern I ever bought. I put it into a drawer because it was much too difficult for me back then and didn't find it again until two years ago.

The quilt is made up from 2" squares. Many of these squares are pieced from smaller scraps. They were put together forming nine-patch-blocks and then rows. It is essential to meticulously follow the pattern to achieve the intended effect.

Der Quilt besteht aus lauter Quadraten, von denen viele wieder aus kleineren Stücken zusammengesetzt sind. Die Quadrate haben bei mir eine fertige Größe von 5 cm. Diese wurden zu Nine-Patches zusammengesetzt und dann in Reihen zusammengenäht, immer schön nach Plan.

Seit etwa einem Jahr ist das Top fertig, und auch den Rückseitenstoff habe ich schon ziemlich lange. Bei den schönen Herbstblättern musste ich doch gleich zuschlagen. Seitdem habe ich mir allerdings den Kopf zerbrochen, ob ich mit der Hand oder der Maschine quilten soll.
I finished the top about a year ago, and I bought backing fabric right away because I couldn't resist those beautiful autumn leaves. I haven't started quilting until now because I couldn't decide whether to do it by hand or by machine.

I hate wrestling big quilts under my machine. On the other hand it is not exactly easy to quilt by hand through all the seams and seam allowances. I finally decided to quilt this by machine because I am stitching my hexagons by hand right now and I really want to finish the quilt.

Ich hasse es ja, mit so großen Quilts unter der Maschine zu kämpfen. Andererseits ist es aber auch nicht so einfach, mit der Hand durch so viele Nähte und Nahtzugaben zu quilten. Letztendlich habe ich mich für die Maschine entschieden, da ich ja zur Zeit schon die Hexagons mit der Hand nähe und der Quilt ja auch mal fertig werden soll.

The Olde Village

Hier kommt nun endlich ein Bild von dem zweiten kleinen Quilt, den ich nach einem Design von Cindy Notarianni Swainson genäht habe. Als ich ihn genäht habe, habe ich die Technik "Back Basting" ausprobiert. Dabei wird das Design spiegelverkehrt auf die Rückseite eines Stücks Nessel übertragen. Dann steckt man den zu applizierenden Stoff grob zugeschnitten auf die Vorderseite und heftet von hinten schön auf der vorgezeichneten Nahtlinie. Danach werden die Nahtzugaben des Applikationsteils zurückgeschnitten, die Heftstiche nach und nach geöffnet, die Nahtzugaben umgeschlagen und mit der Hand appliziert. Das liefert zwar ungemein genaue und sehr schöne Ergebnisse, aber ich bin für diese Technik einfach zu ungeduldig und habe sie für mich verworfen.

This is the other of the two wall hangings I made based on designs by Cindy Notarianni Swainson. I tried the appliqué technique "back basting" when I made it. The design is reversed and then traced on the left side of a piece of muslin. The appliqué fabric, only roughly cut out, is pinned to the right side of the muslin. Then you baste by hand from the left side, following the traced lines. The seam allowances of the appliqué fabric are cut back, then you take out the basting stitches in small portions, turn under the seam allowances and appliqué the fabric by hand. This leads to very nice and accurate appliqué but I have to admit that I am way too lazy for that much work. I never tried it again.

Kürbiszeit

Dass ich Kürbisse liebe, dürfte angesichts meines Blogs nicht überraschen :-) Und der erste wurde in dieser Saison nun auch schon zu Suppe verarbeitet. Das ist für mich die leckerste Kürbissuppe überhaupt, und selbst mein mäkeliges Kind verschlingt sie mit Begeisterung, daher will ich Euch das Rezept nicht vorenthalten.

If you look at my blog design it will not come as a surprise that I love pumpkins. And I already turned the first pumpkin of this fall into soup. We all love pumpkin soup, and even my picky son can't get enough so I will post the recipe today. The original recipe uses metric measurements which I will provide here. I considered converting them using the internet but it seems that liquid measurements in the US and the UK are different from each other, even if they have the same name (cup, fl oz), so if you want to try the recipe please convert the measurements yourself into the unit that suits you best. There are lots of websites available to help you with that, like this one and this one.

Kürbissuppe mit Kokosmilch

Zutaten:
1 kg Kürbis (in Stücken)
2 kleine Zwiebeln
2 kleine mehlige Kartoffeln
4 Stück Ingwer (walnußgroß)
2 Dosen Kokosmilch (à 400 ml)
800 ml Gemüsebrühe
4 Eßlöffel Curry

Zubereitung:

Ingwer schälen und in feine Streifen schneiden. Mit Zwiebeln, Curry und 2 Eßlöffeln Kokosmilch 10 Minuten köcheln. Kürbis und restliche Kokosmilch zugeben, weitere 10 Minuten köcheln. Mit Brühe aufgießen, Kartoffeln zugeben, in 20 Minuten weichkochen lassen. Pürieren.

Wer es nicht komplett püriert mag, kann auch ein oder zwei Kellen Kürbis- und Kartoffelwürfel beiseite stellen und nach dem Pürieren hinzufügen. Auch Kürbiskerne machen sich gut als zusätzliche Einlage. Der Phantasie sind keine Grenzen gesetzt. Allerdings empfehle ich, zunächst mit Ingwer und Curry etwas sparsamer umzugehen, bei meinem ersten Versuch ist die Suppe sehr scharf geworden.


Pumpkin Soup with Coconut Milk

Ingredients:

1 kg pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cut into dice
2 small onions, peeled and chopped
2 small mealy potatoes, peeled and cut into dice
4 pieces of ginger (walnut-sized), peeled and chopped
2 cans of coconut milk (400 ml each)
800 ml vegetable stock
4 tbsp. curry powder

Preparation:

Heat 2 tbsp. coconut milk in a stockpot, add chopped onions, ginger and curry powder and let simmer for 10 minutes.
Add pumpkin and coconut milk, let simmer for another 10 minutes.
Add vegetable stock and potatoes, cook about 20 minutes until vegetables are tender.
Puree until smooth.

You may also place one or two cups of the cooked vegetables aside and add them again after you pureed the soup if you like something to bite in your soup. Roasted pumpkin seeds are also a nice addition to the soup, just use your imagination and add what you like. But I recommend to go easy on the ginger and curry powder unless you like it spicy. On my first try I added what the recipe said and it was too spicy for my taste.
