365 Challenge Januar

Und der erste Monat ist geschafft! Mir macht das tägliche Blöckchen immer noch Spaß. Daher gibt es jetzt ein Update mit allem, was ich in den letzten beiden Wochen genäht habe, dabei ist auch schon der erste Block für Februar. Das zweite Bild zeigt alle 31 Januar-Blöcke und dazu den Bonus Block.

Schön bunt

Heute ist das Top für den Healing Hearts Quilt fertig geworden. Es ganz anders als das andere... und das war ja genau das, was ich wollte. Die leuchtenden Farben gefallen mir sehr gut, und obwohl ich am Anfang Probleme hatte, die verschiedenen Farbtöne von rot, pink und orange harmonisch zusammenzufügen, bin ich mit dem Ergebnis sehr zufrieden. Das Photographieren gestaltete sich jedoch schwierig, und obwohl ich auf einem Stuhl herumgeturnt bin, ist es mir nicht gelungen, alles in ein Bild zu bekommen, was meinen Mann zu der Bemerkung veranlasste, ich würde einen Selfie-Stick brauchen. Na, schönen Dank auch :D

 

I finished the top of the Healing Hearts Quilt today. It is quite different from the other one... and that's exactly what I wanted. I love the vibrant colours, and although I had a hard time in the beginning to figure out how to make all the different red, pink and orange hearts work together, I am quite pleased with the result. I did have trouble though to take a good picture, and although I climbed on a chair I didn't manage to catch everything. My husband suggested I needed a selfie stick... I don't think so!! :D

365 Challenge Update

Bisher habe ich es tatsächlich geschafft, bei den täglichen Blöcken mitzuhalten. Ich freue mich sogar jeden Tag auf den neuen Block. Kleine Teile haben mir schon immer gefallen, und ein Block pro Tag ist ja auch eine sehr überschaubare Aufgabe

I am still keeping up with the daily blocks. In fact I am actually looking forward to making them. I have always liked small pieces, and one block a day is a very doable task.

Die zündende Idee

Jetzt, wo es mir wieder besser geht und ich auch wieder etwas mehr Zeit habe, schien mir der Zeitpunkt gekommen, endlich die zweite Ladung Heilende Herzen zu verarbeiten, die ich letztes Jahr bekommen habe. Die Idee, vier Blöcke als Eckblöcke im Rand zu verwenden, gefiel mir immer noch, aber ich hatte keine Ahnung, was ich mit dem Rest des Randes anstellen sollte. Eigentlich wollte ich schon über Weihnachten loslegen, aber mir fehlte einfach die zündende Idee. Ich habe viel in EQ herumgespielt, aber irgendwie sprach mich alles nicht an. Nachdem ich mehrere Ideen wieder verworfen hatte, bin ich dann zufällig über den richtigen Block gestolpert. Ich hatte einen Flying Geese Block aus der EQ Library geholt, in den Quilt eingefügt und geplant, die Farben dann zu verändern. Das habe ich auch gemacht, aber irgendwie sah der Quilt mit den EQ-Farben viel besser aus.

 

Now that I am feeling better and have a little more time, I decided it was time to do something with the second set of Healing Hearts I received last year. I still liked the layout idea of putting four of the blocks into the border but it took me a long time to come up with a design that spoke to me. I had planned on making this my Christmas holidays project but I just wasn't ready at the time. I played around with lots of ideas in EQ but nothing looked right to me. I started over several times, and last week I finally stumbled upon something by accident. I pulled a Flying Geese block from the EQ library and set it into my border, intending to change the colours afterwards. And I did change the colours but for some reason the EQ colour combination worked much better for my design. 

I took out the blocks again and realized that red/orange/yellow/green Flying Geese would pick up all the colours in the heart blocks and actually pull everything together. I thought about it for a couple of days, and the longer I looked at it the more I liked it, so I bought fabrics this week. I found the perfect batiks for this project and already finished two sets of Flying Geese. Since the blocks are metric but I am sewing imperial over here, I ended up with a weird finished block size of 9 3/4". I have to paper piece the geese units, there is no way to cut and sew them exactly otherwise. I like it so far... I need sixteen more units, and then I will have to figure out the exact position of all the blocks.

Also habe ich die Blöcke herausgeholt und festgestellt, dass Flying Geese in rot, orange, gelb und grün richtig gut dazu passen und dem Ganzen den letzten Schliff verleihen. Je länger ich darüber nachdachte, umso besser gefiel mir diese Idee, also habe ich jetzt Stoffe gekauft. Die Batiks hatten genau die richtigen Farben, und ich habe schon zwei Flying Geese Einheiten fertig. Ein bisschen schwierig war es mit den Maßen. Da die Blöcke in cm genäht sind, ich hier aber in inch nähe, ist die fertige Blockgröße mit 9 3/4 inch ziemlich krumm. Also muss ich die Flying Geese über Papier nähen (oder in diesem Fall Windelvlies), ansonsten wird das nie exakt. Bisher gefällt es mir gut... ich brauche noch sechzehn weitere Einheiten, und dann werden Blöcke herumgeschoben, bis mir das Layout zusagt.

365 Challenge

Neues Jahr, neuer Block des Monats... nicht ganz. In diesem Jahr ist es eher ein Block des Tages. Im November stieß ich zufällig auf die 365 Challenge. Ich weiß gar nicht mehr, wo ich das gesehen habe, vermutlich auf Facebook. Es sah interessant aus, also habe ich mich mal für die täglichen emails angemeldet. Ob ich da mitmachen wollte, wusste ich nicht, aber es kann ja nichts schaden, wenigstens die Anleitungen zu haben. Aber ich wusste, dass, wenn ich mich entscheiden sollte, die Blöcke zu nähen, ich auf jeden Fall die Farben ändern würde. Im Original ist der Quilt blau und braun, und das sind ja nun so gar nicht meine Farben. Civil War Reproduktionsstoffe sprechen mich eher nicht so an.
 

Another year, another block of the month... not quite. This year it is actually a block of the day. Last November I came across the 365 Challenge. I don't even remember where, probably on Facebook. It looked interesting, so I signed up for the daily block emails. I was totally undecided if I wanted to do it or not but it can never hurt to have the instructions, right? I did know though that if I decided to do it, I would have to change the colours. The original design is blue and brown, and those are definitely not my colours. I am not a civil war reproduction fabrics kind of girl.

Kathy who came up with the idea lives in Australia, so when I get up her day is already over. This means I get the blocks a day early, the first block was posted on New Year's Eve my time, and I spent two days wondering if I should start making the blocks and what fabrics to use. Kathy has several colourways on her site for inspiration, and I liked the pink/green and red/teal variations. Black and white looks interesting too but I wanted some colour. While pondering my options I came across the Bali Watercolor scraps that I had left over from the Coming Up Roses quilt. They looked like a good starting point to me, and we also have lots of Watercolors at the quilt shop, so I won't have trouble getting something that works when I run out of leftovers. 

Eine Australierin namens Kathy veröffentlicht täglich die Blöcke, und wenn ich aufstehe, ist für sie der Tag schon vorbei. Das bedeutet, dass ich die Blöcke immer schon einen Tag früher bekomme, der erste Block wurde schon an Silvester in meiner Zeitzone veröffentlicht, und ich habe mich zwei Tage lang gefragt, ob ich denn nun mitmachen soll und welche Stoffe ich nehmen soll. Kathy hat mehrere Varianten zur Inspiration auf ihrer Seite, und mir gefiel der Quilt in pink/grün und rot/teal. Schwarz-weiß finde ich auch nicht schlecht, aber ich wollte ein bisschen Farbe. Als ich in meinen Stoffen wühlte, fielen mir die Bali Watercolor Reste vom Coming Up Roses Quilt in die Hände. Sie schienen mir ein guter Ausgangspunkt zu sein, wir haben jede Menge Watercolors im Quilt Shop, also kann ich problemlos passende Stoffe finden, wenn mir die Reste ausgehen.

Obwohl heute erst der 2. Januar ist, habe ich schon vier Blöcke... vom 1., 2. und 3. Januar und dazu noch den Bonus Block vom 1. Januar. Kathy hatte offenbar Sorge, dass fortgeschrittene Quilter es zu langweilig finden würden, am ersten Tag bloß drei Streifen zusammenzunähen, daher hat sie zusätzlich noch einen etwas komplizierteren Bonus Block gepostet. Die fertige Blöckgröße ist 3 inch, das sind etwa 7.5 cm, die vielen Dreiecke waren ganz schön fummelig. Aber ich nehme die Herausforderung gern an. Damit will ich jetzt nicht sagen, dass ich wirklich jeden Tag einen Block nähen werde oder dass ich überhaupt je alle Blöcke nähen werde. Aber ich bin schon gespannt, wohin mich das führt.

 

Although it is only January 2, I have four blocks already... January 1, 2 and 3 and also the January 1 bonus block. Kathy probably thought the experienced quilters would be disappointed to only sew three strips together and posted a more complicated bonus block. The finished block size is only 3", so all those half-square triangles were quite tiny. But I am always up for a challenge. I am not saying I will make a block every day or that I will ever make all of the blocks. But it will be interesting to see where this goes.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Alberta

Am 15. Dezember wurde der 3. Block des Canadian Mystery Quilt veröffentlicht, und ich habe meine Packung gleich mit nach Hause genommen und zusammengesetzt. Diesmal geht es um Alberta, unsere Nachbarprovinz. Neben den Ölfeldern im Norden ist es vor allem Cowboy Country mit vielen Farmen und Pferden und natürlich den Rocky Mountains.

Block 3 of the Canadian Mystery Quilt was released on December 15, and I took my kit home right away and assembled it. The featured province this time is Alberta, our neighbour. Alberta is cowboy country, lots of farms and horses, and of course the spectacular Rocky Mountains.

Merry Christmas

In diesem Jahr habe ich endlich wieder Weihnachtskarten gemacht. In den letzten drei Jahren hatte ich entweder keine Zeit, oder es war keine Nähmaschine verfügbar. Im November sah ich den weißen Stoff mit den Weihnachtsbäumen in einer Lieferung, und ich wusste sofort, dass ich daraus Weihnachtskarten nähen wollte. Es war mir nur nicht klar, was ich als Stabilizer nehmen sollte. In Deutschland war ich mit Pelmet Vilene sehr zufrieden, aber das scheint es in Nordamerika nicht zu geben. Während ich dann alle Pellon Stabilizers im Laden herauszog und inspizierte, bot mir eine Kollegin Timtex zum Ausprobieren an. Das hat ganz gut funktioniert, obwohl es für meinen Geschmack etwas zu dick ist. Aber da ich keine bessere Idee habe, werde ich wohl weiter darauf zurückgreifen.
 

I finally made Christmas cards again this year. Lack of time and/or a sewing machine prevented me from doing so during the last three years. When I saw the white fabric with the Christmas trees come into the shop in November, I knew right away that I wanted to use it for Christmas cards. I wasn't sure what to use as a stabilizer as Pelmet Vilene doesn't seem to be available in North America. I was still debating all of the Pellon stabilizers we have in stock when one of my co-workers jumped in and gave me some of her Timtex to try. It worked quite well although it is a little too thick for my taste. But unless someone else comes up with a better suggestion, I will keep using it for cards.

Meet Your Holiday Selves

Hier ist ein sehr gelungener Weihnachtswerbespot (für ein Mittel gegen Sodbrennen, aber das tut eigentlich nichts zur Sache). Der "Toastmaster" ist der Ehemann einer Kollegin von mir, so bin ich überhaupt auf dieses Filmchen gekommen. Ich wäre am ehesten der "spoon licker". Und worin erkennt Ihr Euch wieder?

This is a very funny Christmas commercial (for a pill to treat heartburn, but that doesn't really matter). My co-worker's husband was hired to be the "toastmaster". I think I am the "spoon licker". And what is your holiday self?

Mt. Cheam and Lady Peak

An diesem Wochenende hatten wir unsere Quilt Shop Weihnachtsfeier, und ich habe einen kleinen Wandbehang für Pauline genäht. Die Berge sind zwei hier aus unserer Gegend, Mount Cheam und Lady Peak. Ich habe alles selbst entworfen, auch die rote Scheune und die Ahornblätter auf dem Rand. Allerdings muss ich zugeben, dass die Idee mit dem gepatchten Rand und den Blättern, die in den Block hineinragen, von den zwei kleinen Quilts stammt, die ich schon vor Jahren genäht habe, The Covered Bridge und The Olde Village. Ich habe hier nur ganz andere Techniken verwendet, es ist alles mit der Maschine genäht, und das Spielen mit Ideen und Stoffen hat mir viel Spaß gemacht.

 

We had our quilt shop Christmas party this weekend, and I made a small wall hanging for Pauline. The mountains are two of our local mountains here, Mount Cheam and Lady Peak. I drew the design myself, including the red barn and the border maple leaves. Although I have to admit that I got the idea with the pieced border and the leaves reaching into the block from the two small quilts I made years ago, The Covered Bridge and The Olde Village. I just used different techniques, everything was done by machine this time, and I had a lot of fun playing with ideas and fabrics.

Shadows

Ich habe spontan mal wieder einen Quilt als Probestück für den Quilt Shop genäht, einen Tischläufer namens "Shadows". Das Design ist von Shania Sunga, der Designerin, die auch den Canadian Mystery Quilt entworfen hat. Die Libellen gefallen mir sehr gut, und es sah schnell und einfach aus, also habe ich die Packung mit nach Hause genommen. Normalerweise nähen wir nur das Top, und gequiltet wird dann professionell mit einer Longarm-Maschine. Aber da es nur ein relativ kleiner Tischläufer war, habe ich beschlossen, auch gleich selbst zu quilten, zumal Shania in der Anleitung schrieb, man solle in einem Schritt applizieren und quilten, und das ist ja eine Technik, die mir sehr liegt.

I volunteered to make another store sample. It is a table runner called "Shadows", designed by Shania Sunga, the lady that designed the Canadian Mystery Quilt. I really love the design, and it looked like a fairly quick and easy project, so I took it home. Usually we only sew the top and the quilting is done by a professional longarm quilter. But this was just a table runner, so relatively small, and I decided to do the quilting myself, especially since Shania suggested to do the applique and quilting in one step, a technique that I like very much.
