Dessert Time

Dessert Time ist ein Quiltmuster von Eleanor Burns, für das ein Layer Cake und eine Jelly Roll verwendet werden. Dieser Quilt ist hier der große Hit, wir verkaufen eine Menge Fertigpackungen davon. Normalerweise gehöre ich nicht zu den Leuten, die Precuts kaufen, ich habe mich eher immer gewundert, was die Leute alle mit dem ganzen Zeug machen. Bis dann eines Tages eine junge Frau im Quiltshop auftauchte, die den Dessert Time Quilt aus der Stoffserie "Fresh Cut" genäht hatte... und plötzlich wurde ich dann doch in die Welt der Precuts hineingezogen.

 

Dessert Time is the name of a quilt pattern by Eleanor Burns which uses a Layer Cake and a Jelly Roll. That seems to be the big hit here, we are selling a lot of kits for this one. Now I am usually not someone who buys precuts, in fact I have always wondered what exactly people do with all of those. And then a young lady showed up who had made the Dessert Time quilt using the Fresh Cut fabric line... and I was sucked into the precut world after all.

This happened some time ago when I had no mind at all for sewing but we still had Fresh Cut Layer Cakes and Jelly Rolls and also all the fabrics of the line on bolts. So I figured I'd better stash some away for later, should the mood to make a quilt ever strike again. I even bought matching fabric for the backing from the same line. And last weekend my sewing mojo made a little appearance. I was feeling good, so I grabbed my Layer Cake and started sorting fabric squares.

Das ist jetzt schon eine Weile her und zu einer Zeit passiert, als ich so gar keinen Kopf für's Nähen hatte. Aber da wir zu dem Zeitpunkt noch Layer Cakes und Jelly Rolls von Fresh Cut hatten und auch die ganze Stoffserie noch auf Ballen, dachte ich mir, ich sichere mir mal lieber was für bessere Zeiten, falls ich doch mal wieder Lust zum Nähen bekomme. Sogar passenden Rückseitenstoff habe ich gekauft. Und siehe da, am letzten Wochenende fühlte ich mich gut und hatte plötzlich Lust, in Stoffen zu wühlen. Also habe ich den Layer Cake auseinandergenommen und angefangen, die Stoffe zu sortieren.

Der fertige Piecemakers Quilt

Im Januar hatte ich ja angefangen, den Piecemakers Quilt als Muster für den Quilt Shop zu nähen. Schon damals hatte ich mich darüber ausgelassen, dass es nicht gerade mein Lieblingsprojekt war, zumal mir die Farben so gar nicht gefielen. Dann kam das Leben mit der Diagnose dazwischen, und ich wollte das Ding nur noch fertig bekommen. Und obwohl mir so gar nicht nach Nähen war, haben wir in einer Mammutaktion das Top dann beendet (mein Mann hat tapfer beim Zureichen der vielen Kleinteile geholfen und die Nähte gebügelt).
 

Back in January I started working on the Piecemakers Quilt as a store sample. As you might remember, I was not happy with the whole project especially since I didn't like the colours. Then my diagnosis got in the way, and I just wanted to finish the thing and move on. Although I didn't feel like sewing at all, we made a huge effort (my husband helped by handing me all those tiny pieces and ironing the seams) and finished the top quickly.

It was then professionally quilted with a longarm machine, and I got it back to put on the binding. I personally would never let someone else quilt a quilt for me, as I am a firm believer that quilting makes the quilt, and I would not give away such an important part of the design process. But a store sample is a different thing, and since I didn't love the quilt anyway, I had no problem with it.

Gequiltet wurde er professionell auf einer Longarm-Maschine, und ich bekam ihn dann zurück, um das Binding anzunähen. Ich persönlich würde das Quilten ja niemals jemand anderem überlassen, für mich ist das ein wichtiger Teil des Prozesses, der das Ergebnis sehr beeinflusst, das möchte ich gar nicht aus der Hand geben. Aber bei einem Muster für den Laden ist es natürlich anders, und da ich an dem Quilt sowieso nicht besonders hing, hatte ich kein Problem damit.

Der fertige Quilt sieht deutlich besser aus als das Bild auf der Anleitung. Ich bin allerdings fast verrückt geworden, weil fast alle Stoffe in der Piecemakers Serie eine Richtung haben und die Designerin beim Schreiben der Anleitung darauf überhaut nicht geachtet hat und alles kreuz und quer war. Das kann ich gar nicht haben, also habe ich eine Menge Zeit darauf verwendet, das alles wieder zu richten. Mir gefällt besonders das sekundäre Muster im fertigen Quilt, aber die Farben finde ich immer noch nicht schön. Aber so macht es mir nichts aus, dass ich ihn los bin, und ich war sehr zufrieden, dass ich den letzten Stich am Binding gerade noch vor meiner ersten OP geschafft habe, so dass ich nun zu fröhlicheren Projekten fortschreiten kann, wenn ich denn mal wieder Lust zum Nähen habe. 

I think the finished quilt looks much better than the picture on the pattern. It just drove me crazy that pretty much all the fabrics in the line are directional, and the designer paid no attention to that when writing the pattern. I am rather obsessive that way, so I spent a lot of time adjusting the pieces. I really like the secondary design but I still don't like the colours. So all in all I am not unhappy to see it go, and I was glad that I finished it just in time before my first surgery, so I will be free to move on to happier projects when the mood strikes again.

Life is what happens...

... while you are busy making other plans. Und diesmal ist mir das Leben so richtig in die Quere gekommen, und ich versuche immer noch, die Teile wieder zusammenzusetzen, um den Berg, der sich vor mir erhebt, zu bewältigen. Nähen tue ich nicht viel, da ich dabei zuviel Zeit zum Denken habe und meine Gedanken sich dann gern auf "die dunkle Seite" begeben. Stattdessen gehen wir zum Square Dance so oft es geht, denn dort können sich meine Gedanken nicht selbständig machen, wenn ich aufpassen muss, was der Caller als nächstes ansagt. Wenn ich Zeit und Lust und etwas zu sagen habe, werde ich auch weiterhin posten... aber im Moment muss ich mich auf meinen eigenen Kampf konzentrieren. Sobald das alles überstanden ist, melde ich mich zurück.

 

... while you are busy making other plans. And life happened to me big time, and right now I am trying to put the pieces back together and get through this. I am not sewing much as this gives me too much time to think, and my thoughts tend to go to the dark side. I am square dancing whenever I can because nobody's thoughts can take off when they have to listen to a caller and do what he or she says. I will keep posting whenever I have the time and something to say... but I need to focus on my health first now. I will be back as soon as I can.

Änderungsarbeiten

Ich glaube, ich habe hier noch nicht erwähnt, dass wir im letzten September mit Square Dance angefangen haben. Das macht viel Spaß, und obwohl die meisten Leute am Anfang sagen, sie würden niemals so ein komplettes Outfit mit Petticoat tragen wollen, tun die meisten es schließlich doch. Es macht einfach mehr Spaß, wenn der Rock schwingt, und so habe ich im Dezember bei einem Second Hand Verkauf mein erstes Outfit erstanden.

 

I probably haven't mentioned here before that we started square dancing last September. It is a lot of fun, and even though many people swear they would never wear one of the outfits with a crinoline, most of them finally do it anyway. In my opinion it is way more fun to dance with a swinging skirt, and so I bought my first outfit at a recycle sale in December. 

The skirt turned out to be a little short, not just for me, also for the crinoline, but I figured it would be easy enough to change that. I bought some fabric, dug out my pattern drafting books and constructed a flounce. I was too lazy to sew ruffles, making a flounce with the advantage of a straight seam seemed to be a better idea. Well, square dance skirts use up a lot of fabric, the circumference of the skirt was about 135", the picture shows only a quarter of the pattern piece.

Der Rock war ein bißchen kurz, nicht nur für meine Größe, auch im Vergleich zum passenden Petticoat, aber ich dachte mir, das dürfte relativ einfach zu beheben sein. Also habe ich Stoff gekauft, meine Schnittkonstruktionsbücher herausgekramt und einen Volant konstruiert. Zum Einkräuseln war ich zu faul, ein Volant, der dann den Vorteil einer geraden Naht hat, erschien mir einfacher. Square Dance Röcke verbrauchen eine Menge Stoff, der Rock hatte einen Saumumfang von fast 3,5m. Auf dem Bild sieht man nur ein Viertel des Schnitt-Teils für den Volant.

Aber ich habe es schließlich geschafft, aus meinem Stoff vier solcher Teile zu schneiden, und das Annähen war dann kein Problem mehr. Der Rock hatte auch einen Bindegürtel aus dem gleichen Stoff, den habe ich abgetrennt und mit dem Material die Bluse noch ein bißchen verlängert. Stattdessen gibt es jetzt einen silbernen Gürtel dazu. Jetzt bin ich gerüstet für alle Valentinstagstänze :)

 

But I managed to cut four pieces out of my fabric, and adding the flounce was no problem at all. The skirt also had waist ties in matching fabric which I took off. I used the material to lengthen the blouse too and added a silver belt instead. Now I am all ready for the Valentine's Day dances :)

Elefantenkissen

Ein schnelles Projekt habe ich zwischengeschoben, ein Kissen als Geburtstagsgeschenk für eine Freundin. Sie liebt Elefanten, also habe ich einen für sie entworfen. Zuerst war ich mir mit dem Batikstoff, den ich für den Elefanten gewählt habe, so gar nicht sicher, aber jetzt finde ich ihn einfach perfekt. Die braungelben Flecken im Grau harmonieren gut mit dem orangen Flanellstoff des Randes. Da habe ich auch lange gesucht, sie hat aus Feng Shui Gründen eine lange Liste von Farben, die sie nicht in ihrem Haus haben will. Das Kissen gefällt ihr sehr gut, also war es die Mühe allemal wert.

 

A quick project in between, a pillow as a birthday gift for a friend. She loves elephants, so I designed one for her. I wasn't sure about the batik fabric that I chose for the elephant but now I think it is just perfect. The brownish-yellow spots go well with the orange border flannel. For feng shui reasons I was rather limited in the choice of colours there, she has a whole list that she doesn't want in her house. She loved the result, so it was well worth the trouble.

Die Blöcke sind schon mal fertig

... und sie gefallen mir sogar ganz gut. Die blauen Stoffe sind sehr schön, mal sehen, wie es wird, wenn die ganzen braunen Stoffe dazu kommen, da bin ich mir noch nicht so sicher.

 

I finished all twelve blocks and I quite like them so far. The blue fabrics are very pretty. I am just not sure how it will look in combination with all the brown fabrics.

Piecemakers Quilt

Durch die Arbeit im Quilt Shop habe ich jeden Tag neue Ideen, aber kaum Zeit, sie alle umzusetzen. Bald fängt auch wieder die Zeit der Quiltshows an, und im Shop liegen einige Fertigpackungen, die vorher noch in Quilts verwandelt werden müssen. Ich habe mich freiwillig für ein Projekt gemeldet und bekam dann die Packung für den "Piecemakers Quilt", einen Quilt, den ich selbst so nie genäht hätte.

 

Working at a quilt shop gives me new ideas daily, I just don't have the time to work on them all. The quilt show season will start soon, and there are a few more samples that need to be made from kits before then. I volunteered to make one and ended up with a kit for the "Piecemakers Quilt", something I would never have sewn on my own.

First of all, I love tiny appliqué, and this quilt is made with blocks from a panel that pretend to be appliqué but in reality are just printed... totally not my thing. And then the colours are nowhere near my usual palette. But since I just have to follow a pattern without any chance of playing around with fabrics and colours, it should not be a problem. We will see :)

Zum einen liebe ich ja winzigste Applikationen, und die Blöcke dieses Quilts werden aus einem Panel geschnitten und sehen zwar aus wie appliziert, sind aber gedruckt. Und dann sind das auch so gar nicht meine Farben. Aber da ich ja nur der Anleitung folgen muss und keine Gelegenheit haben werde, mit Farben und Stoffen zu spielen, sollte das kein Problem sein. Ich bin gespannt :)

Frosty Times

Es wird wohl niemanden überraschen, dass ich noch mehr Tischsets genäht habe :D Ich bin fest entschlossen, passende für jede Jahreszeit und Gelegenheit zu haben. Und sie machen Spaß und sind schnell genäht. Diese Wintervariante ist entstanden, nachdem im Quilt Shop jemand nur schwarz-weiße Stoffe aus der Serie "Frosty Season" bestellt hatte. Ich hielt die Stücke in den Händen, die ich gerade abgeschnitten hatte, und dachte, hmm, das sieht bestimmt gut aus, alles nur schwarz, weiß und grau mit einer Karottennase als Farbklecks.

 

I don't think it will be a big surprise for anyone that I made more placemats :D I am determined to have some for all seasons and occasions. And they are fun projects that don't need too much time. These were inspired by a fabric order at the quilt shop. Someone wanted all black and white fabrics from the line "Frosty Season", and I looked at what I had just cut and thought, that would look good, all black and white and grey, with just the orange carrot nose for colour.

I had drawn the snowman years ago in EQ, for a pillow and a tablerunner, so all I had to do was dig out the pattern. Sewing was fast and easy, and I didn't make any mistakes this time. I really like them, they make me smile whenever I see them. My boss at the quilt shop liked them so much that she asked me to write a pattern. Now I only have to find the time.

Den Schneemann hatte ich schon vor Jahren in EQ gezeichnet, für ein Kissen und einen Tischläufer, also musste ich nur noch die Datei heraussuchen. Das Nähen ging schnell, und ich habe mich diesmal auch nicht dumm angestellt. Sie gefallen mir richtig gut, ich muss immer lachen, wenn ich die Schneemänner sehe. Meine Chefin im Quilt Shop fand sie auch toll, sie wollte gleich, dass ich eine Anleitung dafür schreibe. Mache ich glatt... falls ich mal die Zeit dazu finde.

Tea Time Kitchen Apron

Im Moment bin ich abends immer so müde, dass ich nicht viel auf die Reihe bekomme, weder was Nähen betrifft noch das Bloggen. Aber im Dezember habe ich eine Schürze genäht, die ich im Quilt Shop trage. Irgendwie habe ich nie einen Stift, wenn ich einen brauche, und mein Telefon brauche ich auch, damit ich anhand der Artikelnummer auf der Website nachsehen kann, wie der Stoff aussieht, wenn ich einen bestimmten für Bestellungen suche. Eine meiner Kolleginnen trägt häufig eine Schürze mit mehreren Taschen, in denen sie ihre Sachen unterbringt, und ich fand, das war eine gute Idee.

I am always tired these days so I don't get much done, neither sewing nor blogging. But I made something in December to wear at work. I never seem to have a pen on me, and I need my phone to look at pictures on the website when I am hunting down fabric for orders. One of my co-workers often wears an apron with several pockets to store all her stuff, and I thought that was a very good idea.

So I googled and found this Tea Time Kitchen Apron. It was very easy to make, and now I always have room to store my things. I still keep losing my pens though :)

Also habe ich Google bemüht und diese Tea Time Kitchen Schürze gefunden. Die Anleitung ist auf Englisch, aber sie ist ganz einfach zu machen, bloß ein Rechteck Uni-Stoff, das unten umgeklappt und dann abgesteppt wird. Jetzt habe ich also auch immer Platz für alle meine Sachen. Nur einen Stift habe ich komischerweise trotzdem nie, wenn ich ihn brauche :)

Ein Erstlingswerk

Im letzten Jahr hatte ich für eine Freundin einen Babyquilt gemacht, und sie war davon so begeistert, dass sie gleich lernen wollte, wie man einen Quilt näht. Also habe ich angeboten, es ihr beizubringen, und hier ist das Ergebnis. Ihr erster Quilt ist ein weiterer Babyquilt, und ich finde, er ist toll geworden. Als Perfektionistin stimmt sie mir da nicht ganz zu, in meinen Augen ist sie viel zu streng mit sich, was sind schon ein paar Nähte, die nicht ganz exakt aufeinandertreffen... es ist immerhin ihr erster Quilt! Mir gefällt er. (Und sie ist mittlerweile total vom Quiltvirus infiziert, hat zu Weihnachten noch einen Rag Quilt genäht, den sie ihrem Sohn geschenkt hat, bevor ich ein Photo machen konnte, und arbeitet jetzt an ihrem dritten Quilt. Mein Werk ist vollbracht, würde ich sagen :D)

 

Last year I made a crib quilt for a friend, and she loved it so much that she decided she wanted to learn how to quilt. So I offered to teach her, and here is the result. Her first quilt is another crib quilt, and I think it turned out great. Being a perfectionist, she is too hard on herself and is not happy about a few seams that don't match... but seriously, it is her first quilt! I love it. (And she really caught the quilting bug... she finished a rag quilt before Christmas which she gave to her son before I could take a picture and is now working on her third quilt. Mission accomplished, I would say :D)
