Oven Mitts

Die Ofenhandschuhe sind inzwischen fertig. Sie waren einfach zu nähen und schnell fertig, ein gutes Projekt, um wieder anzufangen. Die Maschine näht toll, diese alten Singer Maschinen sind wirklich zuverlässig. Den Zickzackstich habe ich inzwischen auch ausprobiert, er funktioniert, ich muss nur noch ein bißchen mit der Fadenspannung spielen, dafür hatte ich bloß noch keine Zeit. Freihändig quilten sollte auch möglich sein, dafür muss ich aber noch einen passenden Fuß besorgen.

 

I finished the oven mitts, it was a quick and easy project, great for getting started again. The machine is wonderful, those old Singers are really reliable. I even tried the zigzag stitch in the meantime, it works well, just needs a little more tension adjustment but I didn't have time yet to figure that out. Free-motion stitching should also be possible but I need to get a foot for that first.

Neue alte Nähmaschine

Meine Nähmaschinen sind noch in Deutschland... und in Nordamerika ist die Stromspannung anders. Ich weiß, dass meine Pfaff Maschine zwischen europäischer und amerikanischer Spannung wechseln kann. Meine kleine Featherweight ist jedoch definitiv europäisch, da muss ich mir einen Spannungswandler beschaffen. Aber ich habe inzwischen eine "neue" Maschine, die eigentlich eine alte ist.

 

My sewing machines are still in Germany... and North America has a different voltage. I know that my modern Pfaff machine can switch between European and North American voltage. My little Featherweight is European so I will have to get some kind of transformer to get it to work here. But I have a "new" machine which is actually an old one.

It is a Singer Slant-O-Matic 403 special (sounds fancy). A friend gave it to me, it belonged to her mother who passed away last year. Her father now sold the house and needed to get rid of some things, including the sewing machine. I am very glad that she remembered my fabric addiction and gave it to me. The original receipt from 1961 was still in the case.

Es ist eine Singer Slant-O-Matic 403 special (hört sich vornehm an). Ich habe sie von einer Freundin geschenkt bekommen. Sie gehörte ursprünglich ihrer verstorbenen Mutter, und als ihr Vater jetzt das Haus verkauft hat und einige Dinge loswerden wollte, unter anderem die Nähmaschine, hat sie an mich gedacht und sie mir gegeben, worüber ich mich sehr gefreut habe. Die Originalquittung von 1961 war auch noch im Koffer.

Sie erinnert mich sehr an die Featherweight, Aufspulen von Unterfaden funktioniert ganz genauso, und auch das Einfädeln ist ziemlich ähnlich. Aber die 403 kann sogar Zickzack nähen. Das funktioniert mit einer kleinen Scheibe, die in die Maschine eingelegt wird. Eigentlich kann sie sogar ganz viele verschiedene Zierstiche nähen, aber die Box mit dem ganzen Zubehör (Nähfüße und Zierstichscheiben) ist irgendwann mal verloren gegangen, also habe ich nur die Zickzackscheibe, die in der Maschine war. Den Zickzackstich habe ich noch gar nicht ausprobiert, aber der Rest funktioniert prima. Der Geradstich ist super, diese alten, zuverlässigen Singer-Maschinen gefallen mir wirklich gut. 

It reminds me a lot of my Featherweight, winding a bobbin works exactly the same way, and the threading process is very similar. But the 403 can be changed to zigzag. It uses little discs that need to be inserted into the machine for different stitches. Actually it could be set to several different decorative stitches but the box with all the additional feet and discs got lost somewhere along the way, so all I have is the zigzag disc. I haven't tried the zigzag yet but the rest of it works just fine. Very nice straight stitch, I love these old reliable Singer machines.

Wieder da

Mir ist schon bewusst, dass ich ziemlich plötzlich und ohne Erklärung verschwunden bin und lange nicht mehr gebloggt habe... aber jetzt bin ich wieder da und werde auch hoffentlich bald wieder nähen. In den letzten eineinhalb Jahren habe ich gar nichts genäht. Wir haben uns auf einen Umzug nach Kanada vorbereitet und sind nun auch endlich hier angekommen. Unsere Kisten sind allerdings noch nicht hier, also bin ich ein bißchen eingeschränkt in dem, was ich nähen kann, wenn ich nicht alle Sachen komplett neu kaufen möchte. Aber ich freue mich darauf, endlich wieder zu nähen. Und ich weiß, dass ich von den Quilts, die ich vor zwei Jahren noch genäht habe, keine Bilder mehr gepostet habe. Die sind irgendwo auf einer externen Festplatte, wenn ich sie finde, werden sie nachgereicht.

I know I pretty much disappeared without an explanation and was gone for a long time... but I am back now and will hopefully start sewing again soon. I haven't done any sewing in about 18 months. We prepared for a move to Canada in the meantime and have finally arrived. All our boxes are not here yet so I am limited in what I can do without buying everything again but I am really eager to start sewing again. And I know I haven't posted pictures of the finished quilts I made two years ago. I am pretty sure I have them on some external drive somewhere. I will post them as soon as I find them.
 

We moved to British Columbia, and this is my new local quilt shop: Hamels Fabric & Quilting. Lots and lots of good stuff and very nice people too. I had decided to throw my cutting mat and rulers out and get new ones here, they had been about 15 years old anyway. And although Canada is officially metric, and they sell fabric by the metre, rulers and cutting mats are all imperial here. It doesn't really matter to me, I can deal with either.

Wir sind nach British Columbia gezogen, und das hier ist mein "neuer" Quilt Shop: Hamels Fabric & Quilting. Dort gibt es Unmengen an Stoffen und Zubehör, und die Leute sind sehr nett. Meine Schneidematte und Lineale hatte ich in Deutschland noch entsorgt, die waren etwa 15 Jahre alt und nicht mehr in bestem Zustand. Und obwohl Kanada offiziell metrisch ist und auch Stoff meterweise verkauft wird, sind Lineale und Schneidematten alle in Inch. Mir ist das ziemlich egal, ich kann sowohl metrisch als auch imperial nähen.

Topflappen oder Ofenhandschuhe brauche ich noch, und ja, es ist mir schon klar, dass ich die wohl billiger kaufen könnte, aber das macht ja keinen Spaß. Das silberne Zeug ist das Vlies, das haben sie empfohlen, weil die silberne Schicht Hitze reflektieren soll. Darunter ist es weiß und fühlt sich an wie Thermolam. Also werde ich als erstes offizielles Projekt Ofenhandschuhe nähen. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob ich schon alles gekauft habe, was ich brauche, ich bin so daran gewöhnt, dass ich alles im Vorrat habe. Aber der Quilt Shop ist nur etwa 15 Minuten entfernt, da kann also nichts passieren.

I need potholders or oven mitts, and yes, I know I could buy them for less than the material costs, but where is the fun in that? That silvery stuff is the batting, they recommended it because it is supposed to reflect heat. So oven mitts are officially going to be my first project. I am not sure I have everything I need, I am so used to having all the supplies handy. But the quilt shop is about 15 minutes away, so if I need more stuff, it will be really easy to get.

Coming Up Roses

Eigentlich dachte ich ja bei dem pinkfarbenen Quilt immer an Himbeersorbet, aber manchmal sind Quilts eigensinnig, und es endet anders als geplant. Dieser spezielle Quilt hatte mit Himbeeren nichts am Hut und wollte lieber Rosen. Ich habe ziemlich viel herumgekritzelt auf der Suche nach Quiltmustern, aber nichts hat mich 100%ig überzeugt. Also habe ich einfach mal losgelegt - und es gefällt mir super gut! Also wird der Quilt jetzt "Coming Up Roses" heißen, ein Wortspiel, das sich leider nicht ins Deutsche übersetzen lässt.

I had something like "Raspberry Sherbet" in mind for the pink quilt but sometimes quilts have a mind of their own. This one decided it didn't like raspberries and wanted to be a rose quilt instead. I doodled around a lot and wasn't really satisfied but thought I would just try to quilt what I had come up with - and I really like it! So I guess "Coming Up Roses" is what I will call this quilt.

Backing nach Ankes Art

Nachdem ich nun drei Restequilts genäht hatte, wollte ich unbedingt vermeiden, dass sich die Reste wieder stapeln. Anke näht manchmal auf der Rückseite überzählige Blöcke ein, das wollte ich auch mal versuchen. Allerdings habe ich nie überzählige Blöcke, da ich ja immer sorgfältig plane, und für weitere Blöcke hat der Stoff auch nicht gereicht. Also habe ich alles in Quadrate geschnitten und zu vier Reihen zusammengenäht, die ich dann auf der Rückseite eingefügt habe.

After making three scrap quilts I didn't want to start piling up leftover fabric again, so I tried to use as much of the fat quarter pack as possible for the quilt. I remembered that Anke sometimes adds leftover blocks to the quilt backing. I never have too many blocks as I carefully plan every quilt I make, and I didn't have enough fabric to make more blocks. So I cut everything into squares , sewed them together in four rows and added these to the backing.

Die Ränder sind dran

... am pinkfarbenen Top, das damit offiziell fertig ist. Das Vlies hatte ich schon in Wahlsdorf gekauft, allerdings fehlt mir noch passendes Quiltgarn. Und ich muss mir natürlich noch überlegen, wie ich überhaupt quilten will. Mein erster Gedanke waren Rosen, passend zum Rückseitenstoff... mal sehen, was mir da so einfällt.

I added all the borders to the pink quilt top which is officially finished now. I already bought the batting in Wahlsdorf, just need to go out and get some thread. And, of course, figure out how to quilt it. I am thinking roses... but nothing specific yet.

When I Leave Berlin

Normalerweise interessiere ich mich nicht so sehr für Musik und würde mich nicht als Fan von irgend etwas oder irgend jemandem bezeichnen, mit einer Ausnahme: Seit über 25 Jahren liebe ich die Musik von Bruce Springsteen. Ich hatte ihn bereits zweimal live in Berlin gesehen, 1988 und 1993. Als ich im letzten November dann hörte, dass er am 30. Mai 2012 wieder in Berlin auftreten würde, habe ich sofort Tickets bestellt.

I am usually not very much into music or a huge fan of any artist with one exception: I just love Bruce Springsteen and have been doing so for over 25 years. I saw him twice in Berlin, in 1988 and 1993. I lost track a little over the years but when I heard last November he would come to Berlin again on May, 30 2012 I orded tickets the very minute they were available

The big day finally arrived, and with about 55,000 others we went to Berlin's Olympic Stadium to see the Boss. He didn't arrive until 20 minutes after the scheduled beginning... I heard he was stuck in rush hour traffic. This is just a rumor but it would fit right in with Berlin's inability to organize anything (like the S-Bahn public transportation trains or the new airport whose opening has been postponed several times now).

Diese Woche war der große Tag dann da, und mit ca. 55.000 anderen Leuten machten wir uns auf den Weg ins Berliner Olympiastadion. Der Boss traf erst mit 20 Minuten Verspätung ein. Gerüchteweise hatte er auf der Stadtautobahn im Stau gestanden... keine Ahnung, ob das stimmt, aber es würde sich einreihen in die generelle Unfähigkeit dieser Stadt, etwas ohne Pannen auf die Reihe zu bekommen (ich sage nur S-Bahn und Flughafen).

Bruce hatte eine spezielle Überraschung für seine Berliner Fans im Gepäck und eröffnete das Konzert mit seiner Version von "When I leave Berlin", einem Lied von 1973. Ich hatte es noch nie vorher gehört, aber es gefällt mir sehr gut.

Bruce had a special surprise for us and started with a cover version of the 1973 song "When I leave Berlin". I had never heard that song before but I really like it a lot.

It was a great concert, rather short by Bruce's standards (three hours, but again I think this was Berlin's fault rather than Bruce's, he probably wasn't allowed to perform later than 11 p.m.). He played lots of songs from his new album "Wrecking Ball" but also long-time favorites, and my favorite fast and loud Bruce song ever, "Badlands".

Es war ein großartiges Konzert, auch wenn es mit "nur" drei Stunden für Bruce Springsteens Verhältnisse eher kurz war. (Wobei ich auch da glaube, dass das nicht an Bruce lag, vermutlich durfte er im Olympiastadion nicht länger als bis 23 Uhr spielen.) Er spielte viele Stücke von seinem aktuellen Album "Wrecking Ball", aber auch viele ältere Sachen, unter anderem einen meiner Lieblings-Bruce-Songs "Badlands".

Nach dem Konzert war ich zwar halb taub und heiser und meine Hände taten weh, aber es hat sich definitiv gelohnt. Wenn ich könnte, würde ich sofort wieder hingehen.

I was half-deaf after the concert, had lost my voice and my hands hurt but it was definitely worth it. I would go again right away if I had the chance.

Und noch eine Hülle

Es dauert nur noch 30 Tage, bis wir nach Yellowstone fliegen! Die meisten Leute verstehen vermutlich gar nicht, was daran so toll ist (erst gestern wurden wir gefragt, was wir da schon wieder wollen, das hätten wir doch alles schon gesehen). Es ist wahrscheinlich unmöglich, das zu erklären, das muss man selbst gesehen und erlebt haben. Für uns ist Yellowstone einer der schönsten Plätze auf der Erde, und wir können es kaum erwarten zurückzukehen. Diesmal haben wir gut zehn Tage im Park zur Verfügung, also brauche ich natürlich ein extra Büchlein für meine Notizen.

About a month from today I will be back in Yellowstone! Yay! Now most people probably don't understand what is so special about this place, and it is impossible to explain if you have never seen it. Let me just say that it is one of the most beautiful places in the world and I can't wait to get back there. This year we will spend more than ten days there, and I decided I needed an extra booklet for my geyser notes.

So I needed another book cover, this one preferably with a geyser embellishment. The size of the book asked for a slim but tall geyser so I chose Beehive. I made a rough sketch in EQ, fused the pieces together and then piled wool and decorative threads on top and free-motion-stitched like crazy. Now I can write down geyser times in style this summer.

Und das Büchlein brauchte selbstverständlich auch eine Hülle, möglichst mit einer Geysir-Dekoration. Aufgrund des Formats brauchte ich einen Geysir mit einer schmalen, aber hohen Eruption und wählte Beehive. Einen ersten groben Entwurf habe ich mit EQ gemacht und die Teile dann mit Vliesofix geklebt. Dann habe ich Wolle und dekorative Garne daraufgelegt und wie wild freihändig mit der Maschine getackert. Jetzt habe ich bestimmt das schönste Büchlein, um die Eruptionszeiten der Geysire aufzuschreiben.

Ausnahmsweise Lob für den Zoll

Normalerweise beschwere ich mich ja immer über den Deutschen Zoll, da es besonders im letzten Jahr ewig gedauert hat, bis Stoffbestellungen aus den USA hier angekommen sind. Meine letzte Bestellung hat jetzt aber überraschenderweise nur drei Wochen gebraucht, bis sie hier war. Das sind die Stoffe für die Ränder und die Rückseite des pinkfarbenen Quilts. Der Stoff mit den Rosen entzückt mich ganz besonders, der sieht in natura noch viel schöner aus als auf dem Bild.

I know that I always complain about German customs since it takes them forever to clear my fabric orders. Today I am pleased to announce that my latest order from the US only took three weeks to get here. These are the fabrics for the borders and backing of the pink batik quilt. I just LOVE the backing fabric with the roses. And it fits the other fabrics perfectly.
