Weihnachtskarten

Bevor das Jahr zu Ende geht, will ich doch noch schnell die Weihnachtskarten zeigen, die ich bekommen habe bzw. in Renates Fall den Weihnachtsbaum als Lesezeichen, den sie mir geschickt hat.

Katzenspuren im Schnee

... liebe ich sehr. Leider teilen meine Katzen diese Einschätzung nicht.

I love cat tracks in the snow. Unfortunately my cats don't share my enthusiasm.

Rose Sampler - endlich fertig!

Ich habe noch etwas nachzureichen, das in der blogfreien Zeit fertig geworden ist, nämlich den Rose Sampler. Anfang des Jahres habe ich dann endlich auch den Rand gequiltet, und pünktlich zum Sternetreffen-Ost im März war der Quilt dann komplett fertig. Insgesamt habe ich etwas mehr als fünf Jahre dafür gebraucht. Und ganz ehrlich: noch einmal machen würde ich es nicht.

I have one more project to show that I finished while I was not blogging: my Rose Sampler. At the beginning of this year I finally quilted the border and bound the quilt just in time for our March retreat. It took me a little more than five years to make this quilt. And to be honest: I wouldn't do it again.

Karlsbad

Bevor uns das Virus dahinraffte, haben wir es noch geschafft, einen Ausflug nach Karlsbad zu unternehmen. Es war eisig kalt, aber sonnig, und in der Fußgängerzone gibt es viele hübsche Häuser (und gutes Essen).

Before we got sick we managed to drive to Karlsbad. It was really cold that day but sunny. They have a pedestrian mall with many nice houses there (and good food).

Weihnachtskugel

Diese winzige Weihnachtskugel haben wir von unserem Sohn zu Weihnachten bekommen. Er hat sie selbst bemalt und war so aufgeregt, dass er sie uns schon eine Woche zu früh geben musste, weil er die Spannung nicht mehr aushalten konnte. Sie ist viel kleiner, als sie auf dem Bild scheint.

Our son gave us this tiny Christmas tree ornament. He painted it himself and was so excited about it that he gave it to us a week early because he couldn't stand the tension any longer. It is much smaller than it looks in the picture.

Fröhliche Weihnachten

Ich wünsche allen fröhliche Weihnachten. Diese Weihnachtsbäume sind mein diesjähriges Kartenmotiv. Ich hoffe, sie sind überall pünktlich angekommen.

I wish everyone a merry Christmas. This is the card I made this year. I hope they all arrived on time.

Weihnachten in Tschechien

Wie schon vor zwei Jahren verbringen wir die Weihnachtswoche in Tschechien. Leider ist es diesmal nicht so kalt, so dass der See nicht zugefroren ist, auf dem wir letztes Mal jeden Tag Schlittschuh gelaufen sind. Und zu allem Überfluss hat uns auch noch ein Virus erwischt, so dass wir unseren Urlaub mehr oder weniger hustend und mit Fieber auf dem Sofa verbracht haben. Dafür werden wir von unseren Vermietern mit selbstgebackenen Weihnachtsplätzchen verwöhnt.

We are spending the Christmas week in the Czech Republic as we did two years ago. Unfortunately we are not as lucky with the weather, it is not cold enough, and the lake is not frozen yet, so we couldn't go ice skating every day as we did the last time. And we came down with a cold and spent most of the week coughing on the sofa. But our landlords spoil us with their homemade Christmas cookies.

(Fast) Fertig gequiltet

Am letzten Wochenende habe ich es endlich geschafft, die Herbstblätter fertig zu quilten, und zwar samt Hintergrund und Wasser. Allerdings fehlt noch der schwarze Rand, und da bin ich immer noch unentschlossen. Da der Herbst jetzt vorbei ist, werde ich den Quilt zunächst wegpacken und erst im nächsen Spätsommer wieder hervorholen. Bis dahin habe ich dann jede Menge Zeit, mir Gedanken über die Vollendung zu machen. Vielleicht quilte ich Ahornblätter auf den Rand? Mit schwarzem Garn oder lieber Multicolor? Oder wird das dann zu bunt? Und mit welcher Farbe mache ich die Randeinfassung? Zuerst dachte ich ja auch an bunt, in allen Herbstblätterfarben, aber das wird dann vielleicht doch zu viel...

I finished quilting the leaf quilt last weekend, including background and water. All that is left to do is the black border, and I am still undecided how to quilt that. Since autumn is over anyway I will put it away until next year. Until then I have plenty of time to think about how I want to finish it. I could maybe quilt maple leaves on the black border? With black thread or variegated? And which color should I choose for the binding? I thought about piecing leftover leaf fabrics for that but that might be too much...

Unter besonderen Umständen

... dürfen Katzen auch mal auf dem Tisch liegen - meinen sie jedenfalls. Der Herbstblätter-Quilt ist immer noch nicht ganz fertig gequiltet und hängt eigentlich über den Stühlen. Nachdem nun eine Ecke auf dem Tisch lag, war das natürlich eine Einladung für die Katzen. Und selbstverständlich mussten sie es beide ausprobieren.

Under special circumstances a cat is allowed to lie on the table - at least that is what they think. The autumn leaf quilt isn't completely quilted yet, and I hang it over the chairs when I am not working on it. Since I left one corner on the table the cats thought they were invited to sleep there. Naturally, they both had to try.

Maschinequilten leichter gemacht

Bevor ich anfing, die Herbstblätter zu quilten, hatte ich ja schon geschrieben, dass ich es hasse, so ein Riesenteil durch die Maschine zu quetschen. Danach fiel mir ein, dass Susanne Froeschle mir schon vor Jahren empfohlen hat, den Quilt in Teilen zu heften, damit das Quilten mit der Maschine einfacher wird. Das habe ich damals auch mit einem Quilt gemacht und es danach prompt vergessen, obwohl es gut geklappt hat.

Before I started quilting the leaf quilt I mentioned that I hate handling a big quilt under the sewing machine. After that I remembered something that Susanne Froeschle had told me a few years ago which makes machine quilting big quilts easier. She recommended basting and quilting in stages which I tried once with good results and then somehow completely forgot.

I decided to try it again and basted just a third of the quilt in the middle. That made quilting there very easy because I didn't have to maneuver the weight of the whole quilt. Then I basted and quilted the second part. I took pictures while basting the last third.
Bei den Herbstblättern habe ich zunächst nur das mittlere Drittel geheftet und gequiltet. Dadurch kam ich in der Mitte gut an alle Stellen, ohne mich mit dem Volumen und dem Gewicht des ganzen Quilts herumplagen zu müssen. Dann habe ich ein zweites Drittel Vlies angefügt und gequiltet. Beim letzten Drittel habe ich jetzt Fotos gemacht.

Es ist hilfreich, wenn man noch nicht ganz bis an den Rand des Vlieses quiltet, dann kann man das Vlies mit großem Zickzackstich annähen. Ich gebe allerdings zu, dass ich mir auch das gespart habe. Ich hefte mit Sprühkleber, und da der Quilt ziemlich eng gequiltet ist, habe ich das Vlies immer nur sorgfältig angesetzt und dann geklebt. Das hat prima funktioniert, das mache ich jetzt öfter so.

It is a good idea not to quilt to the edge of the basted area but leave a little room. That makes it possible to join the batting by machine. But I have to admit I didn't do that. I use a basting spray, and since the quilt is rather heavily quilted I just added the batting accurately and glued it all together. It worked really well, I hope I will remember this method from now on.
