Shadows

Ich habe spontan mal wieder einen Quilt als Probestück für den Quilt Shop genäht, einen Tischläufer namens "Shadows". Das Design ist von Shania Sunga, der Designerin, die auch den Canadian Mystery Quilt entworfen hat. Die Libellen gefallen mir sehr gut, und es sah schnell und einfach aus, also habe ich die Packung mit nach Hause genommen. Normalerweise nähen wir nur das Top, und gequiltet wird dann professionell mit einer Longarm-Maschine. Aber da es nur ein relativ kleiner Tischläufer war, habe ich beschlossen, auch gleich selbst zu quilten, zumal Shania in der Anleitung schrieb, man solle in einem Schritt applizieren und quilten, und das ist ja eine Technik, die mir sehr liegt.

I volunteered to make another store sample. It is a table runner called "Shadows", designed by Shania Sunga, the lady that designed the Canadian Mystery Quilt. I really love the design, and it looked like a fairly quick and easy project, so I took it home. Usually we only sew the top and the quilting is done by a professional longarm quilter. But this was just a table runner, so relatively small, and I decided to do the quilting myself, especially since Shania suggested to do the applique and quilting in one step, a technique that I like very much.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Nunavut

Der zweite Block des Canadian Mystery Quilt wurde letzte Woche veröffentlicht, und sobald die Packungen bei uns ankamen, habe ich meine auch gleich mit nach Hause genommen und zusammengesetzt. Diesmal geht es um Nunavut, das größte und neueste Territorum Kanadas. Dargestellt sind ein Inuksuk und ein Alpenschneehuhn, der offizielle Vogel des Territoriums. (Ich lerne hier jetzt endlich mal, wie die ganzen Vögel eigentlich auf Deutsch heißen.) Im Hintergrund ist Mount Thor auf Baffin Island zu sehen.

 

The second block of the Canadian Mystery Quilt was published last week, and as soon as we received the kits, I took mine home and assembled it. It represents Nunavut, the largest and newest territory of Canada and depicts an Inuksuk and a ptarmigan, the official bird of the territory. The mountain on the left is Mount Thor on Baffin Island.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - New Brunswick

Am 1. Juli 2017 wird Kanada den 150. Geburtstag feiern. Die kanadische Designerin Shania Sunga hat für diesen Anlass einen Mystery Quilt gestaltet. Es gibt dreizehn Blöcke, einen für jede der zehn kanadischen Provinzen und drei Territorien. Die einzelnen Teile werden mit Vliesofix aufgebügelt und erst mal nicht weiter festgenäht. Mir gefielen Idee und Design sehr gut, also habe ich mich für das Programm angemeldet und den ersten Block auch schon zusammengesetzt. Ich denke, ich werde nach der McKenna Ryan Methode weiterarbeiten und freihändig um die Teile nähen und gleichzeitig quilten, wenn alle drei Lagen geheftet sind. Meiner Meinung nach wird das auch die Designerin empfehlen. Ich habe schon ein paar andere Anleitungen von ihr gesehen, und sie mag diese Methode auch sehr. Der erste Block steht für New Brunswick und stellt die Hartland Bridge und den offiziellen Vogel der Provinz, die Schwarzkopfmeise, dar.

Canada will be celebrating its 150th birthday on July 1st, 2017. Canadian designer Shania Sunga has created a mystery quilt to commemorate this event. There are 13 blocks in all depticting Canada’s ten provinces and three territories.  The blocks are constructed using a fusible, raw edge appliqué technique. I love the idea and I love the design, so I signed up for the program. So far I have just fused the pieces to the background fabric. I am thinking of doing it the McKenna Ryan way which means free-motion stitching around the pieces while quilting at the same time. And I think that is what the designer will recommend in the end, I have seen other Shania Sunga patterns, and she likes doing it this way. The first block features New Brunswick and depicts the Hartland Bridge and New Brunswick's provincial bird, the black-capped chickadee.

Kürbisse

Diese Kürbisse habe ich auf Facebook gesehen, und natürlich musste ich gleich ein paar herstellen. Sie gefallen mir gut und sind auch nicht schwierig zu nähen. Eigentlich sollen es Nadelkissen sein, aber ich finde sie auch als Dekorationsstücke schön. Ich sollte vermutlich noch ein paar mehr in anderen Größen machen. Bisher habe ich nur diese drei gemacht und einen davon schon verschenkt. Die Anleitung dazu gibt es hier, allerdings nur auf Englisch, dafür mit vielen Bildern.

 

I saw these pumpkins on Facebook, and of course I had to make a few. They are really cute and not difficult to make. They are supposed to be pincushions but I like them just as decorations. I should probably make a few more in different sizes. So far I have made three, and I already gave one of them away as a birthday gift. The tutorial can be found here.

Three Decades of Loving Stitches

Das war der Titel der diesjährigen Quilt Show der Chilliwack Quilters Guild, es war das 30jährige Jubiläum der Gilde. Ich hatte zwei Quilts in der Show, beide nicht gerade neu, aber im letzten Jahr habe ich ja nun nicht wirklich viel genäht oder gequiltet. Es hat viel Spaß gemacht, und es gab eine Menge zu sehen. Das war vorerst die letzte Show, und ich habe tatsächlich in der Zwischenzeit ein bißchen genäht, so dass ich hoffe, demnächst hier wieder mehr von meinen Werken zu zeigen.

 

That was the title of the Chilliwack Quilters Guild Quilt Show, the 30th anniversary show. I had two quilts in the show, both not exactly new since I haven't done much quilting or sewing over the past year. The show was a lot of fun, and there was plenty to see. I think this is the last show for a while, and I have actually started to do some sewing again, so I hope to be able to show some of my own work again soon.

Quilt Show in Harrison Mills

Schon vor zwei Wochen fuhren wir nach Harrison Mills zur Quilt Show. Die Show dort findet in einer sehr kleinen Halle statt, in der eigentlich nicht genug Platz ist, so dass es wieder schwierig war, Bilder zu machen. Spaß gemacht hat es trotzdem, es ist immer schön zu sehen, was andere so nähen.
 

Two weeks ago we went to the Harrison Mills Quilt Show. It is a small show in a small hall which made taking pictures difficult, there just wasn't enough room. I enjoyed the show a lot, it is always fun to see what other people are working on.

Quilt Sampler

Der Quilt Shop, in dem ich arbeite, wurde in der aktuellen Ausgabe des Better Homes and Gardens Quilt Sampler Magazine vorgestellt. Anfang März tauchte ein Team bei uns auf, um Photos zu machen und die Besitzerin zu interviewen. Danach passierte lange Zeit erst einmal gar nichts. Wir durften darüber auch nicht reden, es war alles streng geheim, bis die ausgewählten Shops im Mai dann auf dem Spring Quilt Market in Minneapolis vorgestellt wurden. Das Magazin kam dann Ende August in den Verkauf, und seitdem ist es im Shop ein bißchen verrückt geworden. Quilter aus ganz Nordamerika rufen an oder emailen, weil sie sich für all die Quilts interessieren, die auf den Bildern zu sehen sind und nach Anleitungen und Fertigpackungen fragen.
 

The quilt shop I work at has been featured in the fall/winter issue of Better Homes and Gardens Quilt Sampler magazine. Back in March a crew showed up to take pictures and interview the owner, and after that nothing much happened. It was all a big secret, we had to keep quiet about it until the featured shops were revealed in May at Spring Quilt Market in Minneapolis. The issue was published in late August, and since then it has been a little crazy as lots of quilters from all over North America keep calling and emailing about all the quilts that are in the pictures, asking about patterns and kits. 

And every shop features a special project, ours is a flannel quilt called "Starring Snowmen". We can't make up the kits as fast as they sell. The official website of Quilt Sampler can be found here, the second picture features most of our staff back in March.

Jeder Shop hat auch ein spezielles Projekt, das mit Anleitung in der Ausgabe enthalten ist, unseres ist ein Flanellquilt mit dem Namen "Starring Snowmen". Wir kommen mit dem Herstellen der Fertigpackungen zur Zeit kaum hinterher. Featherweight Pyjama

Letztens bekamen wir wieder eine Stofflieferung im Quiltshop, und auf einem der Ballen stand ganz klar mein Name drauf, rosa Blumen auf grauem Hintergrund, aus der Serie Daisy Mae von Benartex. Ich widerstand tapfer, da ich grundsätzlich keine Stoffe mehr kaufe, ohne einen Plan für ihre Verarbeitung zu haben. Als ich dann nach Hause kam, fiel mein Blick im Nähzimmer auf die weiße Featherweight, die wir im Mai gekauft haben. Ihr fehlte noch ein Pyjama, und der Stoff, der mir so gefiel, war perfekt dafür, also habe ich ihn am nächsten Tag gekauft (und gleich noch einen weiteren dazu für das Futter). Die Anleitung für den Pyjama ist von Birgit Hinterlang, und ich habe sie damals mit Noelle zusammen von Susanne Froeschle bekommen.
 

A new line of fabrics arrived at the quilt shop the other day, and one of the bolts was calling my name, pink flowers on a grey background from the line "Daisy Mae" by Benartex. I resisted because I don't buy fabric anymore that I don't have a plan for. When I got home I saw my white Featherweight that we bought in May sitting in the sewing room. She still needed a cover, and the fabric I had seen was perfect for it, so I bought some the next day (and some more for the lining) and stitched the sleeve this weekend. The sleeve pattern is available in German at Sue's Quilt Shop and was written by Birgit Hinterlang.

Little Butterflies

Ich habe in diesem Sommer sogar einen kleinen Quilt genäht, bevor es mit der Übelkeit zu schlimm wurde. Ich brauchte ein schnelles Geschenk, und wir hatten im Laden ein passendes Kit, Little Butterflies by Laundry Basket Quilts. Sehr praktisch fand ich die enthaltene Schablone, damit ging das Aufzeichnen der Teile auf das Vliesofix super schnell. Es ist ein fröhlicher kleiner Quilt geworden. Anstelle des Charm Packs könnte man auch gut Batikreste für die Schmetterlinge verwenden.
 

I actually made one small quilt this summer before the nausea got too bad. I needed a quick gift, and we had a kit at the store that was perfect, Little Butterflies by Laundry Basket Quilts. The best thing in this kit was the stencil, it made tracing the pieces quick and easy. It is a very cheerful little quilt. Instead of using a charm pack, this would also be a good quilt to use up batik scraps.
