Nahttrenner und Best Press

Das waren meine besten Freunde bei der Fertigstellung des Mittelblocks für den 365 Challenge Quilt. Als im letzten Jahr am 28./29. Februar plötzlich die Anleitung für diesen Block gepostet wurde, war ich darauf absolut nicht vorbereitet. Hatte es nicht geheißen, wir würden bis April nur die kleinen 3" Blöcke nähen? Ich hatte noch nicht darüber nachgedacht, welche Farbe ich denn nun eigentlich mit meinen Beerentönen kombinieren wollte, und Stoff zur Hand hatte ich schon mal gar keinen. Ich bin dann gleich losgerannt zum Quilt Shop, um Stoff zu kaufen. Eigentlich war das albern, ich hätte den Mittelblock zu dem Zeitpunkt ja auch einfach auslassen können. Aber bis Ende Februar hatte ich immer schön einen Block pro Tag gemacht, und ich wollte nicht aus dem Rhythmus kommen. Nachdem ich dann den Stoff hatte, konnte ich mich mit der Anleitung nicht wirklich anfreunden. Ich war noch nie ein Fan der Methode "Näh einfach zusammen und schneide ab, was übersteht". Wenn man die Mathematik in einem Quiltblock nicht beachtet, kann man sich jede Menge Probleme aufhalsen. Und es hat auch prompt nicht geklappt wie gewünscht, und ich war so frustriert, dass das gesamte Projekt in eine Kiste wanderte und nicht wieder angerührt wurde. Im April sind wir dann ja sowieso umgezogen, aber selbst im neuen Haus hatte ich keine Lust mehr, daran weiterzuarbeiten.

When the instructions were posted for this block on Feb 28/29 last year, I was completely unprepared. Weren't we supposed to make 3" blocks until April? I hadn't decided what colour to use with all my berry pinks and I had no suitable fabric. I rush to the quilt shop back then to buy some. Silly, I know. I could have just let this block sit for a while. But I had made one block per day until then and didn't want to fall behind. The next thing that didn't work for me were the instructions. I have never been a fan of the "just sew it on and cut off what's too much" method. There is a lot of math in a quilt, and if you don't pay attention to measurements, you can create all kinds of problems. I remember that I was so unhappy with my block last year that I just put the whole project into a box and never touched it again. We were moving in April anyway, but even after the move I didn't feel like taking it out again.

But it's a new year, and I am motivated again to work on this project. The first thing I did was fix the centre block. I took it all apart and started from scratch. This time I didn't follow the instructions (I rarely follow instructions anyway, why on earth had I thought I needed to do it here?) but drew the block in EQ and printed it for foundation piecing. It is still not perfect but I like it much better. I can live with it now, and I am looking forward to moving on to the smaller blocks again. From now on I will keep foundation piecing in mind as a good option for more intricate blocks of the 365 challenge quilt.

Aber nun ist es ein Jahr später, und ich habe meine Motivation wiedergefunden. Als erstes habe ich mir nun den Mittelblock vorgenommen. Ich habe alles fein säuberlich aufgetrennt und von vorn angefangen. Und diesmal bin ich nicht nach Anleitung vorgegangen. (Ich lese ja sonst auch so gut wie nie Anleitungen, warum dachte ich eigentlich diesmal, ich müsste es tun?) Stattdessen habe ich den Block in EQ gezeichnet und dann zum Nähen über Papier (oder in meinem Fall Windelvlies) ausgedruckt. Perfekt ist er zwar immer noch nicht, aber sehr viel besser als vorher. So kann er bleiben, und ich wende mich jetzt wieder den kleinen Blöcken zu. Aber ich behalte das Nähen über Papier auf jeden Fall im Hinterkopf für weitere komplizierte Blöcke.
