Fibre Festival

Am Sonntag fand in Kilby ein "Fibre Festival" statt. Das klang interessant, also habe ich mich dort mit einer Freundin getroffen. Und das Wetter spielte auch einigermaßen mit... es regnete jedenfalls nicht... und wir verbrachten dort drei Stunden und sahen uns alles an. Am meisten beeindruckt hat mich der Chilliwack Bobbin Lace Club (Bobbin Lace = Klöppeln). Eine der Frauen am Stand des Clubs kannte ich aus dem Quilt Shop, sie hat auch beim Quilt Projekt für's Fernsehen mitgemacht. Sie heiratet im nächsten Jahr und stellt im Moment jede Menge Spitze für ihren Brautschleier her. Die Chilliwack Spinn- und Webgilde war ebenfalls dort und jede Menge Künstler, die ihre Werke ausstellten und auch Material anboten. Überall Farben und Strukturen, ich wusste gar nicht, wo ich zuerst hinsehen sollte.
 

On Sunday a "Fibre Festival" was held at the Kilby Historic Site. It sounded interesting, so I went with a friend. The weather was nice enough... at least it didn't rain... and we spent about three hours there looking at different things. I was most impressed by the Chilliwack Bobbin Lace Club. One of the presenters was a lady who is also a quilter and was involved in the movie quilt project. She is getting married next year and is currently working on all kinds of lace for her wedding attire. The Chilliwack Spinners and Weavers Guild was also there, and quite a few local artists displayed their work and offered supplies for sale. It was a festival of colours and textures, and I didn't really know where to look first.

Quilt Guild Meeting

Ich bin schon seit fast zwei Jahren Mitglied der örtlichen Quiltgilde, aber bisher konnte ich an den monatlichen Treffen nie teilnehmen, weil ich zu der Zeit immer gearbeitet habe. Nachdem ich meinen Job nun Ende Mai aufgegeben habe, konnte ich endlich zu einem der Treffen gehen. Es war das letzte vor der Sommerpause, traditionell immer ein Pot Luck (jeder bringt etwas mit für das Buffet), also haben wir die meiste Zeit mit Essen und Quatschen verbracht. Aber es gab ein bisschen Show and Tell, und ich habe ein paar Bilder gemacht. Und es gibt auch ein offizielles genähtes Namensschild, das die Mitglieder bei den Treffen tragen sollen, und ich habe meins auch endlich fertiggestellt... keine großartige Leistung, aber immerhin etwas.
 

I have been a member of the local quilters guild for almost two years, I just couldn't attend the meetings until now because I was always working. I quit my job at the end of May, so I finally managed to go to a guild meeting. It was the last one of the season before the summer break which is always a pot luck, so we spent most of the time eating and chatting. But there was some show and tell, and I took a few pictures. And there is also an official name badge that members are supposed to wear at the meetings, and I finally got mine done, yay.

Homecoming

Es sieht doch fast so aus, als ob ich bald wieder nähen werde! Ich habe tatsächlich meine Maschine in der Zwischenzeit benutzt, aber nur für langweilige Sachen wie Reparaturarbeiten. Ich habe noch einen riesigen Stapel Square Dance Kleidung hier liegen, alles Second Hand erworben, da müssen jede Menge Gummibänder erneuert werden und ähnlich spannende Dinge. Aber keine Sorge, damit werde ich hier nicht langweilen, ich wollte es nur erwähnen als Erklärung, warum sich hier immer noch nichts tut.
 

I am getting closer to actual sewing! In fact I have been using my machine but it is mostly for boring stuff like mending clothes. I have a huge pile of square dancing clothes that need new elastic and similar things but don't worry, I am not going to bore you with that. I am just mentioning it to explain why I am not making much progress in the sewing department.

I found a few more pictures that I took right before we moved. I started another Shania Sunga project, this is the Canadian designer who came up with the Canadian Mystery Quilt. There was no new mystery block in May, instead she published "Homecoming", the most beautiful interpretation of the Canadian flag that I have ever seen. I am usually not a big fan of specific designers but I like her work very much. Of course I had to buy the kit, and I started cutting and assembling the Canada geese and the maple leave. And that's all I have so far... because I can't find the pieces :D I remember putting them in a box but I can't remember which one. I found the pattern and the fabrics but no luck with the rest so far. Oh well, I am sure they will show up eventually.

Aber ich habe noch ein paar Bilder gefunden, die ich kurz vor dem Umzug gemacht habe. Ich habe ein neues Projekt von Shania Sunga begonnen, das ist die Designerin des Canadian Mystery Quilts. Im Mai gab es keinen neuen Block, dafür hat sie "Homecoming" veröffentlicht, eine absolut großartige Interpretation der kanadischen Flagge. Normalerweise bin ich ja eher nicht so überzeugter Fan bestimmter Designer, aber ihre Arbeit gefällt mir wirklich gut. Natürlich musste ich die Fertigpackung kaufen, und ich habe auch gleich angefangen, die Kanada-Gänse und das Ahornblatt auszuschneiden und zusammenzusetzen. Und das ist leider alles, was ich bisher geschafft habe... ich finde nämlich die Teile nicht mehr :D Ich kann mich erinnern, sie in eine Kiste gepackt zu haben, aber ich weiß nicht mehr, in welche. Die Anleitung und die restlichen Stoffe habe ich bereits gefunden, aber mit dem Rest hatte ich bisher kein Glück. Naja, irgendwann werden sie schon wieder auftauchen.

 

Bügelbrettbezug

Genäht habe ich immer noch nichts, aber immerhin mache ich Fortschritte im Nähzimmer, da sieht es langsam schon organisiert aus. Kurz bevor wir umgezogen sind, habe ich noch einen neuen Bezug für mein Bügelbrett genäht, den ich hier noch nicht gezeigt habe. Ich fand von Anfang an, dass es ein bisschen mehr Polsterung gebrauchen könnte, und der Originalbezug selbst war auch nicht gerade ein Ausbund an Schönheit. Also habe ich dies als Ausrede benutzt, mehr Stoff zu kaufen und einen neuen Bezug zu nähen. Das ging schnell und problemlos, nur das Durchziehen des Gummibands war ein bisschen lästig und zeitaufwendig. Inspiriert hat mich dieses Tutorial auf Craftsy, aber im Endeffekt habe ich die Anleitung nur einmal durchgelesen und mir dann mein eigenes Ding zurechtgefummelt. Ich wollte eine glatte, gepolsterte Fläche und war mir nicht sicher, ob mich die ganzen Nähte und Quiltlinien nicht stören würden, also habe ich das alles weggelassen.

I am still not back to sewing but I am making progress in organizing the sewing room. Just before we moved I made a cover for my ironing board that I haven't shown here yet. I have always felt that the board needed more padding, and the cover wasn't very pretty in the first place either. So I bought some pretty fabric and whipped up a new cover. It was quick and easy, just pulling the elastic through was a little tedious and time consuming. I was inspired by this tutorial on Craftsy but didn't really use it other than reading the instructions once. I wanted a flat padded surface and wasn't sure if all those seams and quilting lines would work for me, so I ended up making up my own cover by trial and error.

Keine Zeit

Es gibt mich noch, aber ich habe nicht wirklich Zeit zum Nähen. Wir renovieren immer noch, und meine Nähsachen sind alle noch in Kartons in der Garage. Im Mai habe ich allerdings zwei Wochen hektisches Nähen eingeschoben, aber leider darf ich da nicht ins Detail gehen und auch keine Bilder zeigen. Eine Freundin von mir wurde von einer Filmproduktion beauftragt, Quilt Tops zu nähen. Sie brauchten eine Menge Quilt Tops, und wie das beim Film so ist innerhalb kürzester Zeit, also hat sie alle ihre Quiltfreundinnen zum Helfen zusammengetrommelt. Wir haben wie verrückt genäht und alles noch rechtzeitig fertiggestellt. Zeigen kann ich aber nur den Stoffstapel vor Beginn des Projekts... ich weiß, nicht besonders spannend... aber es wird auch wieder besser, versprochen.

 

I am still around but I haven't really had time to sew. We are still renovating, and most of my sewing stuff is boxed up in the garage. I did have two weeks of frantic quilt top making in May but unfortunately I am not allowed to talk about the details or show pictures. A friend of mine was hired by a movie company to make quilt tops for a production. They needed a lot of quilt tops and fast, so she called in everybody she knew to help. We worked like idiots for two weeks and got everything done in time. All I can show is the pile of fabrics that went into this project... not very exciting, I know... but it will get better again, I promise.

Der reine Wahnsinn

In letzter Zeit war es hier recht ruhig... wir sind vor zwei Wochen umgezogen, und ich war mit Einpacken und Auspacken beschäftigt. Wir haben auch noch einiges zu renovieren, Küchenmöbel sind noch nicht eingebaut, und an einen Nähplatz ist gar nicht zu denken. Zeit zum Nähen hätte ich ja sowieso nicht. Also präsentiere ich heute, was zwei meiner Kolleginnen genäht haben. Denise und Kim arbeiten beide am gleichen Paper Piecing Projekt. Denise näht in der Originalgröße der Anleitung mit 7/8" Hexagons. Kim liebt die Herausforderung und hat sich für 1/4" Hexagons entschieden. Das ist kein Tippfehler, es sind tatsächlich 1/4" Hexagons! Und ich dachte immer, meine 1/2" Hexagons wären klein! Ihre sind winzig, ich glaube, ich könnte bei der Größe nicht mal erkennen, was genau ich da eigentlich tue.
 

I have been very quiet lately... we moved into a new house two weeks ago, so I have been busy packing and unpacking. We still have quite a few renovations to do, the kitchen isn't done yet, and I have no sewing space right now, let alone time to sew. So today I have the amazing work of two of my co-workers to show off. Denise and Kim are both working on the same paper piecing project. Denise is going with the original size of 7/8" hexagons while Kim loves a challenge and opted for 1/4". Yes, that's right, 1/4"! And I thought my 1/2" hexagons were small! Hers are tiny, I am not even sure I would be able to see what I was doing.

Endlich fertig

Endlich habe ich es geschafft, das Binding des Healing Hearts Quilts fertig anzunähen, das hat diesmal wirklich ewig gedauert. Und im Quilt Shop haben wir letztens auch gleich Bilder davon gemacht. Mit dem Ergebnis bin ich sehr zufrieden, es hat sich gelohnt, so lange mit dem Design herumzuspielen, bis die zündende Idee kam. Anfangs hatte ich ja schon Sorge, wie ich die vielen verschiedenen Rottöne von Knallorange über Rosa und Pink bis hin zu Dunkelrot nebeneinander unterbringen sollte, aber die Flying Geese im Rand fügen alles zu einem harmonischen Gesamtbild zusammen.
 

I finally managed to finish the binding of the Healing Hearts Quilt, and we even took pictures of it at the quilt shop the other day. I am very pleased with the result, it was definitely worth to wait until the right idea popped into my head. In the beginning I was a little worried about making the bright orange, pink and red blocks work next to each other but adding the colourful flying geese pulled everything together nicely.
