Sonnenblumen

Es stehen ein paar Geburtstage an, und ich brauchte neue Karten. Dabei kamen diese Sonnenblumen heraus.

There are a few birthdays in the near future, and I needed new cards. I came up with these sunflowers.

Bluse oder Zelt?

Ich hatte es ja schon geahnt, irgendwas ist da schief gegangen mit meinem Blusenschnitt. Das Teil ist viel zu groß und ähnelt mehr einem Zelt als einer Bluse. Also habe ich abgesteckt wie verrückt und alles enger gemacht, und jetzt sieht es so aus, als ob es doch noch etwas werden könnte.

Well, I was right with my suspicion, something went wrong with the blouse pattern. It is way too big, it looks rather like a tent than a blouse. I pinned the excess fabric out, took out lots of inches everywhere, and now it looks promising. I may be able to turn it into a blouse after all.

Eine neue alte Bluse

Eine meiner Blusen, die ich sehr gern trage, fällt nun schon fast auseinander. Jetzt hatte ich die Idee, aus einem der weißen Stoffe vom Stoffmarkt eine neue Bluse nach diesem Schnitt zu nähen. Ich habe die Bluse aufgetrennt und aus den Teilen ein Schnittmuster erstellt. Die Papierteile habe ich zu einem Modell zusammengesteckt, das Marcy hier präsentiert. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob das so funktioniert, wie ich mir das gedacht habe. Es kommt mir alles unheimlich weit vor.

One of my blouses which I like very much has almost reached the end of its life. This gave me the idea to copy the pattern and turn one of the white fabrics from the fabric market into a new blouse. I unpicked all the seams, traced the pattern pieces and folded a paper blouse which Marcy models in the picture. I am not really sure if this will work out the way it is supposed to. The whole thing looks pretty wide to me.

Stoffeinkäufe

Heute zeige ich noch, was ich in Amerika für Stoffe gekauft habe. Viel war es nicht, ich war außer bei Bighorn Quilts nur in zwei kleinen Shops. Dort habe ich ein paar FQs erstanden, es ist ja nicht so, dass ich keinen Patchworkstoff hätte.

These are the fabrics that I bought in the US. I just went to Bighorn Quilts and two smaller shops in Utah. Since I really have enough quilting fabrics I only bought a few FQs.

I bought these two fabrics at Bighorn Quilts, they will be used for Sophie's quilt. The tan fabric is for the borders, the yellow-pink one for the backing.

Bei Bighorn habe ich zwei Stoffe gekauft, die ich wirklich brauche, nämlich für Sophies Quilt. Der helle ist für die Ränder, der bunte für die Rückseite.

Hawaii - endlich fertig

Nach fast einem Jahr habe ich es auch endlich geschafft, alle meine Hawaii-Blöcke aus dem Projekt der Zick-Zack-Zicken mit Perlen zu einem Wandbehang zu verbinden.

After almost a year I finally managed to join all my Hawaii blocks from our Zick-Zack-Zicken project. I connected them with beads to form a wall hanging.

The City That Never Sleeps

Gestern sind wir von Denver nach New York geflogen, und ich glaube, ich bin zu alt für diese Stadt. Mein Mann und ich haben 1995 fünf Tage hier verbracht. Damals sind wir bei 35°C von morgens bis abends durch die Stadt gerannt, um alles zu sehen, und abends dann noch ins Kino oder Theater und fanden das toll. Heute hat mich ein einziger Tag in dieser lauten und vollen Stadt an den Rand eines Nervenzusammenbruchs gebracht :-) Vielleicht war es auch der Kulturschock nach der Weite des dünn besiedelten Westens.

Yesterday we flew from Denver to New York. I think I am too old for this city. My husband and I spent five days here in 1995. We walked through Manhattan from morning until night, oblivious to the heat (about 95 F), to see all the sights, and even went to the movies and theaters at night, enjoying every single minute. Now this one day in this crowded and noisy city completely wore me down :-) Maybe it was the culture shock after the wide open sparsely popupated spaces of the west.

But our son loved it and dragged us to all the places he wanted to see. Our first stop was the Empire State Building. We arrived there rather early, the lines were still short so we didn't have to wait long.



Aber unser Sohn fand es toll, und das ist die Hauptsache. Er hat auch das Programm bestimmt und uns morgens als erstes zum Empire State Building geschleppt. Hier war es noch relativ leer, so dass wir kaum anstehen mussten.

Hinterher wollte er dann unbedingt zur Freiheitsstatue. Hätten wir gewusst, wie lange wir an der Fähre anstehen müssen, hätten wir es wohl nicht gemacht. Über zwei Stunden haben wir in der Hitze gestanden und gewartet. Auf Liberty Island sind wir dann gar nicht erst ausgestiegen, da man auf die Statue zur Zeit sowieso nicht steigen kann. Aber auf Ellis Island, wo früher die Einwanderer ankamen, haben wir einige Zeit in dem tollen Museum verbracht.



Afterwards he wanted to see the Statue of Liberty. We didn't realize how long we would have to wait to get onto the ferry, otherwise we probably wouldn't have done it. We had to stand in line and wait in the heat for over two hours. We didn't even get off the ferry at Liberty Island since the Statue is not accessible right now but spent some time at the great immigration museum at Ellis Island.

Our son's final wish for the day was a visit at the New York City Fire Museum (no lines there and great for kids). And as a child in New York, you have to visit FAO Schwarz. When we came out of the shop it started to rain, and since we were tired anyway we went back to the hotel.

Dann waren wir noch im Feuerwehrmuseum, hier mussten wir nicht anstehen, und im Spielzeuggeschäft FAO Schwarz. Danach fing es an zu regnen, und da wir sowieso müde waren und genug hatten, sind wir ins Hotel zurückgekehrt.

Mount Evans

Heute war unser letzter Tag in Colorado. Auf dem Programm stand nur ein Punkt, Mount Evans (hier findet sich die offizielle Website). Dieser Berg ist über 4.300 m hoch und - wir sind ja in Amerika - mit dem Auto bis kurz unter den Gipfel befahrbar. Nur das letzte Stück muss man tatsächlich zu Fuß gehen.

Today was our last day in Colorado. We had just one more thing to do before returning to Denver: drive up Mount Evans Road (click here for the official website). Mount Evans Road is the highest auto road in the US and leads almost all the way up to the 14.240 ft summit. You have to hike just the last few feet.



This was our fourth visit to the mountain but only the second time after 1996 that we actually made it to the summit. The season is short, the road is usually opened around Memorial Day and closed again around Labor Day, depending on the weather and/or the snow. And even if it is open it might just be driveable up to Summit Lake, not to the summit itself.

Es war unser vierter Besuch auf diesem Berg, allerdings erst das zweite Mal, dass wir es tatsächlich bis zum Gipfel geschafft haben. Die Saison ist kurz, der Schnee bleibt lange liegen und fällt wieder früh, so dass die Straße in der Regel nur von Anfang Juni bis Ende August befahrbar ist, und häufig auch nicht bis zum Gipfel, sondern nur bis zu dem etwas tiefer liegenden Summit Lake.


Heute hatten wir Glück, das Wetter war perfekt, die Aussicht grandios, viele Blumen blühten selbst in dieser kargen Höhe noch, und die Murmeltiere spielten in der Sonne. Ein toller Abschluss für eine tolle Reise.


Today we were lucky, the weather was perfect, the view breathtaking, we found many blooming flowers even in this barren environment and saw marmots playing in the sun. A great last day on a great trip.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Heute ging es noch einmal zurück in den Rocky Mountain National Park. Auf der unbefestigten und deutlich weniger befahrenen Old Fall River Road, die nur im Sommer geöffnet ist, fuhren wir hinauf zum Fall River Pass, wo die Straße wieder auf die befestigte Hauptstraße des Parks, die Trail Ridge Road, trifft.

Today we went back to Rocky Mountain National Park. We drove the unpaved and less traveled Old Fall River Road which is only open in summer up to Fall River Pass where the road joins the park's main Trail Ridge Road.



In the afternoon we left the park on the west side and drove to Georgetown, a very pretty former mining town. The historic Georgetown Loop Railroad operates between here and Silver Plume during the summer months, a ride we absolutely had to take.

Mittags haben wir den Park auf der Westseite verlassen und sind nach Georgetown gefahren, einer sehr hübschen ehemaligen Minenstadt. Zwischen hier und Silver Plume pendelt im Sommer die historische Georgetown Loop Railroad, eine alte Eisenbahn, die wir uns natürlich nicht entgehen lassen konnten.

Bear Lake

Heute ging es noch einmal durch die unendliche, dünn besiedelte Weite von Wyoming bis in die Hauptstadt des Staates, Cheyenne.

Today we drove once again through the wide open spaces of Wyoming until we reached its capital, Cheyenne.

From there it was just another short drive back into Colorado. We spent the afternoon in Rocky Mountain National Park, walking around Sprague Lake and Bear Lake.

Von dort war es nicht mehr weit zurück nach Colorado. Den Nachmittag verbrachten wir im Rocky Mountain National Park mit Spaziergängen um den Sprague Lake und den Bear Lake.

Fort Laramie

Heute stand vor allem die Durchquerung Wyomings auf dem Programm. Wyoming ist der zehntgrößte Bundesstaat und hat weniger als eine halbe Million Einwohner. Daher verlaufen die Straßen hier häufig kilometerweit schnurgerade, und es begegnet einem kaum ein Auto, geschweige denn ein Mensch. Das macht das Autofahren doch recht anstrengend.

Today we mainly drove through Wyoming, the 10th biggest state with less than half a million people living there. I think I will never get used to roads going straight on for miles, without much traffic, just a few cows here and there. Driving here is pretty exhausting.

We spent the afternoon in Fort Laramie. It started out as a fur trading post and was later purchased by the army and turned into a military outpost which played an important role when gold was found in the Black Hills and conflicts arose because the prospectors didn't respect that the Natives considered the hills their sacred ground.

Nachmittags waren wir dann in Fort Laramie. Ursprünglich war es ein Handelsposten, später wurde es dann zu einem militärischen Stützpunkt und erlebte vor allem durch Konflikte zwischen Goldsuchern und Ureinwohnern, die ihr heiliges Land entehrt sahen, stürmische Zeiten.
