Stoffmarkt in Potsdam

Last Saturday the Dutch Fabric Market came back to Potsdam. Of course I had to go there, and I did find some nice stuff.

Ines and her daughter knew right away what I want to make from these fabrics. If you don't and would like to know, click here.

I have no specific plans for my other purchases yet.

On Monday I went to Hüco (my favorite fabric store in Berlin) and stocked up on lining, zippers and buttons. Now I will be ready when inspiration hits!

Hexagons

The last trigger to start blogging again was the birthday gift my Zick-Zack-Zicken gave me. Back in 2005 I only knew Ivana, Anke and Susanne. Anke showed us a picture of a quilt that was made mostly with hexagons received as a birthday gift. Well, back then I carelessly said I would take hexagons as a birthday gift, too.

Of course my Zicken did not forget I said that, and after turning 40 this May I received a big box of tiny hexagons last weekend, they measure 1/2" in length. I did not count them but there are more than 700 in the box.

I spent that evening sorting hexagons according to colors. I had even designed a layout in EQ back in 2005, obviously I was more serious about this hexagon thing than I remember.

My cats were very interested in the sorting process. Sally absolutely had to sit in the new box right away.

The next day I stitched the first hexagons together. Don't let the picture fool you, they are smaller than they appear.

After almost eight months without blogging I decided last week to come back. My life went through a lot of changes in the meantime, I work almost twice as much as last year and will probably start working even more hours in September. But since I work best under pressure I am confident I will be able to squeeze sewing and blogging into my schedule although I might not write as much as last year.

In a frenzy I deleted my whole blog including the archives last year :-( I still have all the pictures but most of my writing is gone. Being a perfectionist I will try to reconstruct as much as possible over time.

I spent this week messing with my blog's CSS code to get the layout as close as possible to my old one. Since I am absolutely clueless about computer codes I would like to thank those people that help dummies like me. I found very helpful information on these sites: Blogger Tips and Tricks, Blogger University, The Blog Doctor and The Liberal Banana.

Floral Banner Fall

When I made Leo's flowers I chose designs from Rose Hahn's "Floral Banners". I don't know if these patterns are still available, I couldn't find them online. Today I put the fall banner up, a good time to show it here. Appliqué and quilting were done by hand.

Aster

Sonnenblume

Beide Vorderteile fertig

I finished the right front of the jacket, now on to the sleeves!

A few unpredictable things are happening in my life right now, and I am a little out of sorts at the moment. Not much time is left for sewing and blogging. But this weekend I did some work on my sloper. I will not explain in detail what I did, it was quite a lot of trial and error and not very interesting. But I finally came up with a pattern that seems to be acceptable.

Yesterday I tried to construct a sleeve. Now that was pretty exciting. I loved how all those criss-cross lines on my paper actually turned into a sleeve pattern. I folded the paper sleeve according to "Fit for Real People", and it fits very well! I was really happy about that although I took me two tries. I followed every detail of the construction process in the book and came up with a sleeve that was much too wide and had a rather flat cap.

Looking for a solution I read the next chapter in my book and found out that right in the beginning of the construction process I was supposed to check two measurements because these had to be in a certain relation to each other to come up with a reasonable sleeve width and cap height. They wrote in the book they didn't mention it earlier during the instructions because they didn't want to confuse beginners. Well, duh! Maybe I wasn't confused but I had to throw out my first sleeve construction and start all over again. But I like my second version and will make it from fabric to see if I am satisfied with the sloper now.

I didn't get any sewing done last weekend but I took my knitting with me and made some progress with the jacket. The left front is finished!

My blouse sloper still needs some work. The muslin doesn't fit very well, and I realized that the shoulder width depends on the back width. And since my upper back is rather broad the shoulders turned out broad, too. But my shoulders are not broad in reality, so the seam for the sleeve is not in the right position and there is too much fabric in the upper area of the blouse. Well, I guess I have to find the correct alterations for this problem. Otherwise it looks pretty promising.

Unterwegs in Sachen Football

I spent this weekend without any sewing. My husband is a football referee (football in this case means American Football, not soccer) and has been working games for almost twenty years. He was chosen to officiate in the German Bowl (championship game of the German Football League) this year. The game took place in Frankfurt/Main this weekend.

We were lucky with the weather, it was warm and sunny. The game was not exactly first-class, I guess both teams were very nervous, but it was open until the end and therefore rather exciting. I usually support the underdog in games like this and would have liked to see Kiel win. Their opponents from Braunschweig had already won six titles, three of them in a row during the last three years. But Kiel lost the ball twice in the last few minutes of the game, so the Braunschweig Lions won their seventh title, beating Kiel 20:14.

I finished the back of my knitted jacket! Knitting seems to be like riding a bicycle, once you master it you will never forget it. I did the knitting at night, never checking how much I already got done and was rather surprised when I finished the back part this week. By the way, my cats love knitting! They think it is a great hobby, so cozy and quiet. Whenever I sit on the sofa they will be there right away keeping me company. They just tend to get overexited when the wool moves too much :-)
