Hexagons

Right after I posted about my hexagons for the last time, they went back into their box for another year of sleep. I switched to a different chemo drug that required Benadryl, so I was mostly out of it, and I had my hands in ice gloves to prevent nerve damage to my fingers, so sewing was completely impossible. And I did end up with a little nerve damage anyway, so hand sewing was difficult and not my favourite pastime for quite a while. But I am much better now, and I started going to the local library every week for a quilt meeting. It is an open non-instructional meeting, people come and go, and everyone works on their own projects. I didn't feel like dragging my sewing machine over there every week, and there isn't enough room for everyone to set up their machines, so I took out my hexagons again. At the last meeting we had a birthday to celebrate, and stitching hexagons together while eating cake was lots of fun.

We are just ten days away from the next guild meeting, so it is about time to finally post about the last meeting. There were a few very nice quilts for Show and Tell, and I was very impressed by the number of quilts that were already donated for the We Care program. These quilts are collected until the end of the year and then given to local organizations that pass them on to people in need. It was a really nice parade of We Care quilts around the room.

Neuer Blog

The Heart Pillow Project has been a great success so far. I collected over 60 pillows in the first month, and the first load has been donated to the surgeon's office. I have decided to post updates on the project on my new blog that I set up on my website. This is a local community project, and I don't want to bore everyone to death here with constant pictures of new heart pillows. But I would like to invite my readers to come and take a look at my other blog. Right now there isn't much there that I haven't written about here but I set up the blog in an effort to keep my private and business sewing separate. So if you enjoy my ramblings here, come on over and subscribe.

Piecemaking In The Valley

Every year in October, one of the two quilting guilds in Chilliwack hosts a quilt show. This year it was the Piecemakers Guild. I only joined in September and didn't have a quilt in the show but I helped with some last minute organizational stuff like checking in the show quilts. We were busy square dancing all weekend but I found some time on Saturday morning to go and actually look at the quilts. When we first got here I wasn't very impressed by the quilts in the shows. The colours were too muted and subdued for my taste, and the patterns were way too traditional. But it is getting better, there were actually lots of quilts in this year's show that I really liked. I didn't even try to come up with my favourite, there were just too many.

I am still busy cutting all my scraps into pieces but just cutting all the time is boring, so I have started to make a block once in a while to keep things a little more entertaining. I have made four Hope Chest blocks so far, and I really like the pattern. I guess it could be called disappearing four patch as well but the designers decided to call it Hope Chest, and since they provide a free pattern for it I am not going to argue with them. Their pattern uses precuts - of course, they want to promote their fabric lines - but it is also a very nice idea for larger scraps. You need four 5" squares for one block, two in a feature fabric and two in a background colour, and that's it. I like the secondary pattern that emerges when you put the blocks together but I am not there yet. I have a lot of scraps but most of them are really scraps and not enough for two 5" squares. But it will be fun to see this project grow over time.

Edit: I found out why they call it Hope Chest... it's the name of the fabric collection that was used in the sample. Duh. Sometimes reading helps :)

Quilt Show in Harrison Mills

It was time again to drive to Harrison Mills for their quilt show. The weather was bad, it was raining all day, so spending some time looking at quilts seemed like a good idea. The hall is quite small, so the pictures are only partials and often at an angle but it was still fun.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Ontario

And here is the next Canadian Mystery block that I finished right away, I didn't want to get too far behind. This time it features Ontario, and I am not really sure if I like this block. It seems a little disappointing compared to the others so far. The bird is a common loon, the official bird of the province but I can't really make sense of the rest of the block. Two chairs on a deck looking out on the lake... it looks nice enough but I don't really get the Ontario connection. I have come to the conclusion that it is supposed to show Algonquin Provincial Park. When I hear Ontario I think of Toronto and Ottawa and Niagara Falls. Maybe the designer was trying to leave the big cities out of the quilt but still, somehow this block doesn't feel right to me.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Prince Edward Island

I am a little behind with my Canadian Mystery Quilt blocks, I finally finished the block for Prince Edward Island which was published in early August. The next block was published in mid-September and makes me feel guilty every time I see it. Prince Edward Island is one of the three Maritime Provinces and the smallest Canadian province overall. The block represents the coastline and two of the province's symbols, a blue jay and pink lady's slippers.

I finished my ten heart pillows, so I have the first batch ready. We bought the fibrefill on our way back from the Seattle Bruce Springsteen book signing event, and I stuffed all of them right away. The most time consuming part is always stitching the opening closed by hand but I finally got that done as well. And one of my square dancing ladies told me last week that she had already cut out thirty hearts. Thirty!!

I finally managed to look through my pictures from our guild meeting in September. We had a guest speaker, Dougal Walker of The Freckles Collection. She presented her patterns and also her personal work, what a talented lady! I am not really into embroidery anymore but her personal quilts were right up my alley. And of course there was Show and Tell, lots of inspiration.
