I am still busy cutting all my scraps into pieces but just cutting all the time is boring, so I have started to make a block once in a while to keep things a little more entertaining. I have made four Hope Chest blocks so far, and I really like the pattern. I guess it could be called disappearing four patch as well but the designers decided to call it Hope Chest, and since they provide a free pattern for it I am not going to argue with them. Their pattern uses precuts - of course, they want to promote their fabric lines - but it is also a very nice idea for larger scraps. You need four 5" squares for one block, two in a feature fabric and two in a background colour, and that's it. I like the secondary pattern that emerges when you put the blocks together but I am not there yet. I have a lot of scraps but most of them are really scraps and not enough for two 5" squares. But it will be fun to see this project grow over time.

Edit: I found out why they call it Hope Chest... it's the name of the fabric collection that was used in the sample. Duh. Sometimes reading helps :)

Quilt Show in Harrison Mills

It was time again to drive to Harrison Mills for their quilt show. The weather was bad, it was raining all day, so spending some time looking at quilts seemed like a good idea. The hall is quite small, so the pictures are only partials and often at an angle but it was still fun.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Ontario

And here is the next Canadian Mystery block that I finished right away, I didn't want to get too far behind. This time it features Ontario, and I am not really sure if I like this block. It seems a little disappointing compared to the others so far. The bird is a common loon, the official bird of the province but I can't really make sense of the rest of the block. Two chairs on a deck looking out on the lake... it looks nice enough but I don't really get the Ontario connection. I have come to the conclusion that it is supposed to show Algonquin Provincial Park. When I hear Ontario I think of Toronto and Ottawa and Niagara Falls. Maybe the designer was trying to leave the big cities out of the quilt but still, somehow this block doesn't feel right to me.

Canadian Mystery Quilt - Prince Edward Island

I am a little behind with my Canadian Mystery Quilt blocks, I finally finished the block for Prince Edward Island which was published in early August. The next block was published in mid-September and makes me feel guilty every time I see it. Prince Edward Island is one of the three Maritime Provinces and the smallest Canadian province overall. The block represents the coastline and two of the province's symbols, a blue jay and pink lady's slippers.

I finished my ten heart pillows, so I have the first batch ready. We bought the fibrefill on our way back from the Seattle Bruce Springsteen book signing event, and I stuffed all of them right away. The most time consuming part is always stitching the opening closed by hand but I finally got that done as well. And one of my square dancing ladies told me last week that she had already cut out thirty hearts. Thirty!!

I finally managed to look through my pictures from our guild meeting in September. We had a guest speaker, Dougal Walker of The Freckles Collection. She presented her patterns and also her personal work, what a talented lady! I am not really into embroidery anymore but her personal quilts were right up my alley. And of course there was Show and Tell, lots of inspiration.

Born to Run

I have mentioned my passion for the music of Bruce Springsteen before but I don't think that what I have written here really shows how far my love for this brilliant songwriter and musician goes. If you are still wondering, here is proof that I am totally and absolutely crazy about him :) But let's start at the beginning...

Bruce Springsteen's autobiography "Born to Run" was published last week, and he is now on a book tour to promote it (as if he needed that...). One of the stops was Seattle where he appeared yesterday at the Elliott Bay Book Company. 1,200 tickets were available, and of course they sold out on the very first day. I was very lucky and managed to get one. We only paid the cost of the book, and that admitted the ticketholder and one extra person. We left early yesterday morning and were in line outside the bookstore by 9.30 am. It was extremely well organized, everybody was very friendly, and it is always great to meet other Bruce Tramps. We all knew that our meeting with Bruce would only last for a few seconds but this stopped no one from coming or enjoying every single minute. People flew in from all over for this, so if you think I am crazy for driving two and a half hours down to Seattle for ten seconds of Bruce, then what would you call the lady who flew in from Boston just for this and was taking the 11 pm flight back home with a layover in Chicago?!

Bruce was not actually signing books yesterday, they were all presigned. This was an opportunity to meet him, say hi and have a picture taken. Store employees took the pictures with our cellphones, so the quality is not exactly the best but I am still very happy with how it went. Bruce was very friendly and gracious and made everyone feel that he was truly happy about meeting them, thanking all of us for coming and supporting him. I don't think I could do this for hours with thousands of strangers without losing my sanity.

It was over way too fast but I am very glad that I had this opportunity and actually got to meet him... other than grabbing him during the crowd surf in Oakland last March :)

I can't believe how fast the days are flying by... I am so busy running around that I don't even have time to update my website, let alone my blog. I have several things to post about but just can't find the time right now. Maybe in October... yeah, right :)

Last year I made a heart pillow for myself before my first surgery and then found out that they are virtually unknown around here. One of the nurses in the recovery room recognized the pillow, she had worked at a hospital in the US before where they used them, and she was very enthusiastic about the idea of introducing them here. I talked to my surgeon and some of the quilt guild ladies about the project back then, but we all agreed that I had to work through my own health issues first. I am feeling much better now, and I felt it was time to get things going.

At the September guild meeting I presented my idea and introduced the breast cancer heart pillow project. The response was quite overwhelming. One lady came up to me and told me she had gone through this five years ago and could have used a pillow like this. Many women took the pattern home, and the guild put it up on their website and even sent out an email to every member with the pattern file attached. There is a second guild here, and the lady who schedules their program invited me to come and speak about the pillows at their October meeting. And I also spoke to our square dancing club, many of the members sew their own clothing, and you don't have to be a quilter to make a heart pillow. The response here was pretty much the same. Even some of the men came to me to pick up a pattern, saying they had relatives in town who sew and would be interested in joining the project.

I am trying not to get too excited yet but I am expecting quite a few pillows over the next few weeks. My surgeon alone will need 150 per year. This is a small town, and I think some people were quite shocked to hear this number. His receptionist has been making small square pillows for the patients but she is only one person. She was quite happy to hear about the response, and we are hoping to start giving out heart pillows to breast cancer patients in October. I have ten almost finished, I just realized that I am out of stuffing. They are all sewn and turned, I will hopefully finish them next week.

One of the things that I enjoy very much after moving to Canada is the relative proximity to Yellowstone. It is just a thirteen hour drive from here to West Yellowstone, and yes, I realize that this isn't close at all by European standards but it is nothing in North America, people drive this easily in a day. It is much easier to pack for a drive than for a flight, we can take food and bicycles and bear spray and there is no need to leave the winter coats at home because of baggage weight limits. And you never know when you might need your winter coat in Yellowstone, even in August. We spent another week in the park this year and had a wonderful time. The weather was great, warm and sunny but not too hot and no rain. We would have welcomed a little rain as there were several wildfires burning in the park but the air quality wasn't too bad, and the only road closure did not affect our plans. Here are a few random impressions.

Fan & Mortar Geysers

Fan & Mortar Geyser eruptions are relatively rare, we had seen only one before, in 2012. It was a warm and sunny day, so I decided to take a shower in the geyser spray. Have I mentioned that I love my short hair? The spray is cold by the way, not hot as you might expect, it cools down quickly.

And this is what it looks like when a bunch of geyser crazies meets to watch an eruption...

Meine neue Website

We left for Yellowstone right after my last post and came back home last Sunday. School started on Tuesday, and I have been quite busy getting everything organized, all my threads and pantographs and especially my website. Astrid had already spotted the temporary "Coming Soon" page that I created in Blogger. The "real" site is based on Wordpress, and I found out that Wordpress is way more difficult to manipulate than Blogger which was a very frustrating experience. I wanted the basic elements to look like this blog, and I just couldn't find a theme the would suit my needs. I finally hired my son to create a new Wordpress theme for my website. It was a slow process, teenagers on summer vacation are not the most motivated workers ;)... but we finally got it done. So far it is just a website for my quilting business, but I will add a blog there as well and at some point I will add my patterns, I just need more time to work on them. If you would like to take a look at what I have so far, here is the link to Pumpkin Patch BC.
