Frühchenquilts

Auch in diesem Jahr haben wir in Blossin wieder Frühchenquilts für die Krankenhäuser in Halle gesammelt, die Antje betreut. Mit 41 Quilts (oder waren es 42?) konnten wir Antje nach Hause schicken. Hier zeige ich eine Auswahl.

It is already a tradition to bring donation quilts to our annual quilt meeting. Antje is the contact person for two hospitals, the quilts are donated to prematurely born babies and their parents to give a little warmth and comfort during that difficult time. We sent her home with 41 (or was it 42?) quilts this year. Here is a selection:

Ausgebremst

... habe ich mich mal wieder selbst, weil ich nicht genug Garn hatte, um den blauen Quilt komplett zu quilten. Aber es ist auch schwierig abzuschätzen, wieviel Garn nötig ist, weil die unterschiedlichen Quiltmuster doch unterschiedlich viel verbrauchen. Ich habe mich am Verbrauch beim schwarzen Restequilt orientiert, aber offenbar brauchen diese Muster hier doch mehr. Aber ich habe viel geschafft an den vier freien Tagen über Ostern und schätze, dass ich noch etwa 2 1/2 Stunden für die Blöcke und höchstens eine Stunde für den Rest des Randes brauche. Inzwischen habe ich Garnnachschub besorgt, also stehen die Chancen gut, dass ich es an diesem Wochenende schaffe.

Good Friday and Easter Monday are holidays in Germany, so I had four days off in a row last weekend. The weather wasn't too good, so it was a good time to quilt. And guess what happened... I ran out of thread again. Well, it is hard to judge in advance how much thread will be needed. The quilting patterns I chose for the blue quilt are obviously more thread consuming than the ones I used on the black quilt. But I got most of it done, about 2 1/2 hours left for the blocks and maybe one hour for the rest of the border. I bought another spool of thread this week, so there is a good chance I might finish it this weekend.

Show & Tell

Frohe Ostern

Diese hübsche Karte habe ich nicht gemacht, bei all der Quilterei blieb für Osterkarten keine Zeit. Sabine hat sie mir geschickt, vielen Dank dafür.

Auf Wahlsdorf vorbereitet

... bin ich jetzt auch schon. Ich hatte ja schon eine Idee, was ich mit den pinkfarbenen Stoffen mache, bevor ich sie überhaupt gekauft habe. Anke hat schon mehrere Quilts mit diesem Muster genäht, und Karin saß neben mir in Blossin und nähte genau diese Blöcke. Da fiel mir auf, dass sich die pinkfarbenen Stoffe hervorragend dafür eignen würde. Zu Hause habe ich dann gleich einen Entwurf in EQ gezeichnet.

This might be the fastest quilt I ever made. Even before I finally bought the fabrics I had an idea what to use them for. Anke has made a few quilts using this pattern, and Karin sat next to me in Blossin working on these blocks. When I saw them I realized that they would be perfect for the pink bundle. So after I got home I drew a basic design in EQ.

Then I started cutting the fabric making sure I really had enough for what I had in mind. When I had cut all the pieces I had enough left over to add a pieced border. I then layed out the pieces and moved a few of them around but it turns out that it doesn't really matter where which color goes as long as the values are evenly distributed.

Geschnitten werden musste natürlich auch sofort, bei lauter FQs war ich mir nicht sicher, ob meine Berechnungen richtig sind und der Stoff überhaupt reicht. Natürlich war mehr als genug da, also habe ich dann noch den aus pinkfarbenen Quadraten zusammengesetzten Rand hinzugefügt. Ausgelegt habe ich die Teile auch schon mal und ein paar auch verschoben, aber im Grunde spielt es keine Rolle, welches Teil wo liegt, so lange nur helle und dunkle Teile einigermaßen gleichmäßig verteilt sind.

Im Mai steht dann schon wieder Wahlsdorf an, dort werde ich die Teile zusammennähen. Stoff für Ränder, Rückseite und Binding habe ich auch schon bestellt, das könnte der schnellste Quilt werden, denn ich je genäht habe. Ich bin selbst ganz überrascht :)

I will piece the top in Wahlsdorf (another sewing weekend coming up in May), and I have even ordered fabrics for the borders, backing and binding. And yes, I am surprised myself, this really is fast. I can be very focused if I want to :)

Challenge Quilts

Und auch in diesem Jahr habe ich an der Challenge nicht teilgenommen. Am Anfang des Jahres falle ich ja meist in ein tiefes Loch, und es hat für mich einfach keinen Sinn, wenn ich mich im Februar zum Nähen zwingen muss und eigentlich gar nicht will. Daher habe ich vor ein paar Jahren beschlossen, mich nicht mehr selbst unter Druck zu setzen. Umso mehr erfreue ich mich an der Kreativität und den Arbeiten der anderen. Hier sind die diesjährigen Challenge-Quilts zum Thema "Am See."

Another year, another challenge... not entered by me. I stopped forcing myself to participate a few years ago. A deadline in March is just not good for me with February usually being my worst month. But I really enjoy other people's work, so here are this year's challenge quilts "At the Lake".

Das blaue Restetop

Am letzten Wochenende habe ich eine Menge geschafft. Vermutlich habe ich zuviel Kaffee getrunken :) Nein, im Ernst, ich habe im letzten Dezember ganz mit dem Kaffeetrinken aufgehört, weil ich ihn einfach nicht mehr vertragen habe (Herzrasen und Entzugskopfschmerzen, da musste ich dann doch die Notbremse ziehen). Seitdem habe ich nur noch ab und zu mal einen Latte Macchiato getrunken, und nur aus Espressokaffee, weil ich den besser vertrage. In Blossin gab es auch Latte Macchiato, und jetzt im Nachhinein vermute ich, dass der aus normalem Kaffee und nicht Espressokaffee war. Jedenfalls war ich derartig hibbelig, dass ich am Sonnabend nach dem Mittagessen ungefähr die Hälfte der Teile für den Quilt zusammengenäht habe, ich konnte einfach nicht aufhören. Schlafen konnte ich an dem Abend auch nicht, aber das ist eine andere Geschichte.

I was really productive last weekend. Probably had too much coffee, haha. No seriously, I stopped drinking regular coffee last December because it made me feel bad and gave me heart palpitations and withdrawal headaches. I only have a latte now and then, and I only use espresso coffee which is a different roast and doesn't affect me as much. They offered latte at the retreat but I assume they used regular coffee, and it made me go crazy. I made half of the rows I needed for the top on Saturday afternoon, I just couldn't stop. And I couldn't sleep that night, but that's a different story.

Anyway, I finished all the rows in Blossin and sewed about one fourth of the rows together. After coming home earlier than expected on Sunday afternoon I sat down and stitched all the rows together. Now I can proudly announce that the blue top is almost finished, it just needs the border attached.

Jedenfalls habe ich alle Reihen geschafft und auch noch etwa ein Viertel der Reihen zusammengenäht. Als ich dann am Sonntag früher als gedacht zu Hause war, habe ich mich gleich hingesetzt und den Rest auch noch genäht, so dass das Top jetzt fast fertig ist, fehlt nur noch der Rand.

Da stand mein Name drauf

Ich hatte noch keine Zeit, die Fotos vom Wochenende durchzusehen, also wird es noch ein bißchen dauern, bis ich Challenge Quilts und Show & Tell hier zeige. Aber gekauft habe ich etwas, was ich unbedingt präsentieren muss. Ich wollte ja eigentlich gar nichts kaufen, aber Birgitt hat einfach ein Päckchen mit 20 FQ Bali Handpaints in meinen Farben mitgebracht, was sollte ich da machen? :) Ich bin das ganze Wochenende um die Stoffe herumgeschlichen, und letztendlich sind sie dann doch in meinen Korb gesprungen.

I haven't had time yet to look through all the pictures I took this weekend, so I won't be posting about challenge quilts or Show & Tell for a while. But I just have to share what I bought. I didn't want to buy anything but Birgitt brought a package of 20 FQ Bali Handpaints in my favorite colors, and it kept calling to me the whole weekend... what was I supposed to do? :)

Höhlenkatze

Eigentlich gehörte da auch noch ein kleiner Text zu, aber der ist jetzt wohl im Blogger-Nirvana verschwunden :) Das ist mir ja noch nie passiert. Aber egal, das Bild spricht für sich. Und der Quilt war noch nicht einmal fertig, da steckten noch lauter Nadeln im Binding. Aber das stört eine echte Quiltinspektorin nicht.

A new quilt? Must sleep on it. Not finished yet? Lots of pins in there? I don't care. Leave me alone and let me do my job.

Blossin kann kommen

Ganz plötzlich ist es schon März, und am nächsten Wochenende steht das jährliche Sternetreffen-Ost in Blossin an. Ich brauchte ein Projekt, das ich dort nähen kann, am liebsten etwas, das nur gerade Nähte beinhaltet und sich gut vorbereiten lässt.

Now March has arrived, and our annual quilt retreat is next weekend. I needed a project to work on there, something that involves straight piecing is usually best. With all the talking going on it shouldn't require too much concentration or you might end up undoing a lot of stitches.

After I had cut all my leftover fabric into squares last year I was overwhelmed by how much it was. I realized right away that it was way too much for just one quilt. Two quilts are finished by now, one with a white and one with a black background. Quilt #3 will have a dark blue background. I had collected the necessary fabrics last year and just needed to cut them. It is easier to pre-cut everything at home, there is not enough room at the retreat for everyone to have their own cutting mat. Now everything is cut and packed, and I am ready to start the third and last (at least of this pattern) scrap quilt.

Nachdem ich im letzten Jahr alle meine Stoffreste in Quadrate geschnitten hatte, war mir ja gleich klar, dass sie für mehr als einen Restequilt reichen würden. Einer in weiß und einer in schwarz sind inzwischen fertig, jetzt folgt noch einer in dunkelblau. Die Stoffe lagen schon seit letztem Jahr hier herum, nur schneiden musste ich sie noch. Ich mache das lieber vorher zu Hause, dann blockiere ich nicht ewig einen der wenigen Schneideplätze. Jetzt ist alles fertig und verpackt, Blossin kann kommen.
